My 97 4x4 SC XLT has 170,000 miles on it now. I even had it parked for about 6 months and just got it going about a month ago in time for winter.

My biggest problems have had to do with the charging system.
Replaced the alternator twice.
Replaced the negative cable twice.
Replaced the positive cable once.
Replaced the starter once(did this about a month after shoulder surgery, not fun).
Replaced cable going from the firewall to the alternator once as well.

Other than that I've had the AC replaced(clutch froze up) and done the normal fluid and tuneup items. I've also bought 3 sets of tires now. Definetly have gotten my money's worth out of this baby. Bought it used in 98 with 40,000 miles on it for $21K. I'll be keeping it for awhile since I plan on buying a Mustang this year for my summer car. Probably won't replace the truck for a few more years.

Broke 100K on my drive back up from Orlando... December 29th around 3am... I think I was in Tennessee.

No major problems what so ever... purrs like a kitten with the normal tuneups.

2003 S'crew With 165,000Km

ok, my S'crew just turned 165,00KM......... thats around 103,000Mi's. the only issue I have had is the 4x4 not locking in consistantly. My 2001 I owned had over 180,000km with no issues at all. I will buy another S'crew again.... debating on a 2008 at this point.

Update on 98 Expedition

I posted back in July with 130,000 and no issues. Sure enough in December, I had to spend $$$. Lost a coil so I had that replaced as well as the plugs with 138,000. Tows great, no rattles or leaks and sounds good so I should be allright for another 100,000. I thought about trading it in for a new truck but hell, why not see just how far it will go before I start spending a ton of $$$ and save the rest to pay cash for a 1-2 YO SUV. It's a crying shame they don't build Excursions any longer.

In the 1960's this was the general rule. By the early-1980's carburetor equiped engines were expected to go 150,000 mi +. In general since the advent of modern fuel injection any modern engine maintained by the book should be capable of well over 200,000 mi.
My next door neighbor had a 1988 TBI 350 Chevy that lasted well over 500,000 mi with 10,000 mi OCI on Amsoil ATM 10W-30.

There are many 4.6L Ford Police Cars over 200,000 mi with lots of idle time and pursuit time with 5,000 mi OCI on MC 5W-20 or 10,000 mi OCI on M1. This is easily equivalent to 300,000+ mi in Civilian use.

The primary week point on most new vehicles is the Automatic Transmissions. These seem to have a life-span of around 150,000-200,000 mi even if you change the fluid every 30,000 mi. If you dont change it they seldom last past 100,000-130,000 mi.

Ive got a 1999 F150 with 112,000 miles on it. Runs great. Just had the second battery put in a couple of weeks ago. Im going to replace the spark plugs pretty soon. Rides like new and looks only a few years old. Its a great truck.

I had a '98 Supercab 4x4 that had 185K when I sold it in '03. I never had any mechanical problems with it; it wasn't even breathing hard! Had one frame-bending accident at about 100K miles, took it to a good shop, and never had any other problems.

I now have an '03 Supercrew 4x4 with about 60K. These trucks are bullet proof as long as you maintain them.

Just turned 168,000 on my 97 F150 XL. I love this truck and she still looks and drives great. I have a couple of minor leaks in the intake manafold and timing cover gaskets but BARSLEAK keeps them at bay. It is making a clicking noise on accelleration that I am working on fixing. But for all the bad press the 4.2 got, I am sure lucky to have one of the good ones.

116K on my 1999. Did front brakes at 112K. Everything else is great.

Dad's Ranger is at 176K, still on the original clutch.

We just turned 140,000 on our 99 Expy. Motor runs strong, trans shifts nicely, just keep the fluids clean.

I leased a 1998 Ford F-150 Lariet, and went ahead and bought it 3 years later. I hit 122,000 miles today. Only problem I had early on was a leaky rear window, but nothing since until last month. Had some inside wear on my front tires, so I replaced the front shocks, front brakes and repacked the bearings, seems to have solved the problem. Last month my heater core started leaking, windshield wiper/washer switch went bad, and both power windows quit on me. I plan on keeping this truck for another 120,000.

1999 F-150 4.6, 4WD Sport . Just turned 110,000 miles. Only problems I have had with it are:

Blower resistor meltdown at 105K. 5 minute replacement. I forget what the resisitor cost.

Passenger airbag bulb blew, turning on airbag light (found the fix here $3.00 from Radio Shack and a soldering job).

Odometer began flickering around 100k (again found the fix here, removed cluster and soldered ground pin).

Oh yeah and it tows this:

About 6,000 lbs but it's as aerodynamic as a house.

I previously had a '96 Explorer 4.0 4WD that I sold with 130k with no issues other than EGR valve, EGR position sensor, and an AC valve around 90K. I towed a 22 ft boat with it all of it's life.

Before that, a '94 Ranger 4 cylinder, manual trans that I sold with 120 K. Only problem was the parking brake cable snapped around 100k (I launch my boats often in saltwater though so that was the problem not the truck). This truck towed a 17 ft boat all of it's life. The guy I sold it to still has it... I see it every now and then.

Other Fords I have had:

My wife owned a '98 Escort ZX2...sold it with 197,000 miles. Only mechanical issue was the VCT solenoid sticking (cleaning and cycling the solenoid plus Sea Foam in teh engine oil corrected the issue). A local kid bought it from us 3 years ago and I still see it around periodically.

Then she bought another ZX2, a 2000. This one now has 103,000 miles and so far just the water pump o-ring leaked around 90k (so of course I replaced the pump) and the PVC hose boot cracked setting a CEL light for lean condition, both banks. $5 part and 15 minute fix.

Prior to the first ZX2, she had an '88 Festiva (lol). We sold it with 189,000 miles...it's #3 piston burned through (hole in piston head). It still ran fine and she got it home. We sold it out of state. Figures...the only mechanical failure we had was with a Ford with a MAZDA engine.....
