I'm about to hit the 120,000 mile mark on my 1993 F-150 XLT. That big ol' 300 is still runnin strong too. I plan on seeing many more miles in that thing

110,000 miles and counting. Things are starting to go, though and it's pretty sad.

In the last year alone - transmission lines rusted through, the starter housing rusted through, the rear parking lights decided to stop working, and the brakes have been a bear. With over $1,200 in new brake lines, drums, shoes, pads, rotors, calipers, and everything my brakes still suck. You would think it would stop like a fleetwood, but it doesn,t.

Just had to vent. Love the truck, but it's starting to get on my nerves.

1997 Expy 5.4. Bought it with 83,000 miles and it now has 127,000. Knock at startup began at 93,000 miles and now does it even on warm days but doesn't last as long as cold days. Rebuilt tranny at 119,00 or so after a snap ring inside let loose and trashed the guts. Replaced all front tie rod ends and ball joints at 90,000 or so after the tie rod end fell off in the parking lot at work. New rear axle seals at 90,000 or so. New alternator at 120,000 miles.
I still love the truck. My brother has a 1999 Chev Crewcab 454 with about 40,000 miles and we both pull Jeeps on trailers (5,600 lbs). My Ford still outpulls him and gets better MPG too. His Chev is more comfortable ride though.

I am at 136000 with a 2000 f150 lariat 5.4L
I have had several problems including heater core went bad. 2 radiators went bad. I replace all my fluids at least once a year so it shouldnt be electrolisis. Alternator failed. Passenger window motor. Door lock motors went bad. CD player at times will get hot and not play. A short in a wire leading to coil. Also replaced all coils and plugs after two coils were causing misfires. a knock at start-up that goes away when pressure builds up after 10-20 sec is I think a collapsed lifter.
Oil gauges fall flat on colder mornings. The oil switch is going bad ...

The big problem that makes me rethink ford though is a leak at 56k in the front center of the head--A pinhole--ford fixed but made me pay 25%. Same problem in the new head after 60k more miles at 120k -- Ford will not even talk to me so it has JB WELD. The hole comes up in the front of the driverside head underneath thermostat.

Now that Emonster mentions it, I changed the ball joints at around 110K while installing the suspension lift. The ride still felt OK but when I removed the front suspension I notice those were very wore down almost to the bone.

I have a 1990 F-150 LXT Lariat Supercab with 105,500 miles.
It pings under load and when accelerating. I tried Seafoam.
Timing is set stock at 10 deg. BTDC. I get 13 MPG.

I had the same problem for awhile. I used 8 ounces of Sea Foam in the crankcase for 1000 miles. Changed the oil and have not had any problems since. It even cured the oil usage problem. I would use, burn, blow oil, (I really don't know what happened to that two quarts per oil change) but I don't use any oil now. If you didn't put it in the crankcase, consider doing so.

I had the same problem. Could be plugs and or wires as well. I had the PCM reflashed with a new program and it fixed it.

The plugs and wires and distributor and controle module have been changed. I will contact the dealer for reflashing the PCM.
thanks

I did use some (6-8 OZ) seafoam in the crankcase but only for 140 miles. The second time I used even lower amount for 20 miles. I will keep it (the seafoam) in the motor oil for longer (~1000 miles?) .

The first time I used the seafoam I sucked it up the brake booster vaccum line (16 oz) and poured 6oz in 1/4 tank. I let it sit 20 min and went for a 140 mile (round) trip. I had added about 12 OZ of some oil treatment into the crankcase a week earlier.

The second time I used seafoam, I removed and thouroughly cleaned the upper intake manifold, IAC and ports with throttle body cleaner, and poured 3 ounces of seafoam in EACH cylinder. I let the seafoam sit in there as I reinstalled the intake (with a new gasket). I almost hydrolocked the engine!

More black smoke came out the first time, very little the second time. Anyhow the pinging is still there. It seems to be coming louder from the driver side of the engine block. Could it be exhauts pings?

Thanks for the replies.
