rough idle/engine miss
JUST WANTED TO UPDATE EVERYONE. GOT MY NOTIFICATION FROM FORD AND THEY HAVE ACCEPTED MY DSB APPLICATION. I WENT ON VACATION AND SOMEONE FROM FORD CALLED ALSO. I WILL BE CONTACTING THEM WHEN EVER THEY OPEN MONDAY. HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET THIS ISSUE OVER QUICKLY. TRUCK DIDNT DO GOOD ON THE TRIP (GAS MILEAGE) I FIGURED THE MILEAGE WOULD GO UP FOR INTERSTATE DRIVING BUT I STILL GOT ONLY 12/13 MPG. VERY DISAPOINTING CONCIDERING SOME OF THE STATED MILEAGE OF OTHER 5.4 OWNERS. I WILL KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED ON MY STATUS. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT
I'M BACK AND YES MY ROUGH IDLE IS STILL HERE. WELL I HAD MY DSB HEARING THE SECOND WEEK OF AUGUST. THEY PUT OFF AN ANSWER TO UNTIL SOMONE ELSE COULD COME LOOK AT MY TRUCK. THAT HAPPENED EARLIER IN THE WEEK AND WOULDN'T YOU GUESS IT THE ROUGH IDLE DIDNT SHOW UP (GO FIGURE) WHILE HE WAS RIDING WITH ME. IT HAD WHAT HE CALLED A SLIGHT ROUGHNESS. NOTHING NEAR AS BAD AS I KNOW IT WILL GET. HE DID SEEM TO THINK THAT ITS SOMETHING TEMPERATURE RELATED. AND THE COOLER THE WEATHER THE WORSE MY TRUCK IDLES BAD. I HAVE ANOTHER HEARING DATE FOR EARLY SEPTEMBER AND WILL KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED. THATS FOR THE SUPPORT EVERYONE HAS GIVEN ME AND MANY OTHERS.
I just recently found this site. I am having the same problem with my 99 F150 X-cab 4x4. I took to the dealer I purchased the truck from. They hooked to their computer and found no.4 coil on right side was faulty. About 9 months ago they replaced no.4 on left side. The service manager said that he has not noticed a problem with the coils, but since the truck is no longer under warranty he is going to call Ford to help pay the expense. When I told him that the left side was changed earlier his tune changed. I hate to see so many of us Ford owners are having these problems. I wish that service manager could see all us that are having the same problem. Good Luck Everyone I will report back about what Ford does to help me since my warranty has expired.
JT99FORD,
THE #4 COIL GOING BAD IS A COMMON OCCURANCE ON THE FORD TRUCKS. AND ITS ALL FORDS FAULT FOR INSTALLING THE CHEAPEST HEATER HOSE CLAMP THAT'S AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET. THE OLE SPRING TYPE INSTEAD ON ONE THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE PUT ON WITH A WRENCH OR SCREWDRIVER. I COULDN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE TOLD PEOPLE ABOUT THE BAD CLAMPS OR HOW MANY TRUCKS I HAVE SEEN WITH BAD CLAMPS. THE #4 COIL JUST HAPPENS TO BE RIGHT UNDER WHERE TWO HOSES CONNECT AND THE CLAMPS AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO HOOD BACK THE PRESSURE. CHANGING THE COIL MAY FIX YOUR IDLE PROBLEM AND MAYBE IT WONT. KEEP US INFORMED ON YOUR STATUS. GOOD LUCK

Just wanted to keep everyone informed on the status of my truck. It still hasn't been repaired. I am having my second Dispute Settlement Board hearing Sept11, 2001 and will keep everyone informed on my status. Thanks again for all the support everyone (except Ford) has given us all with our problems. I will keep you informed of my status.
Rough idle solved twice?
I am on my second F150. First I had a '97 4.6 that I experienced the problem with. It was never extremely bad but just enough to irritate you. I fixed it with double dosing fuel injector cleaner along with super unleaded fuel for several tanks. The rough idle steadily disappeared. It would return after a few months and I'd repeat the process. Every time the rough idle would go away.
On my '00 5.4, I've recently had the same problem arise. Again I followed the same treatment above with the same results.
I'm certain that many of these threads are problems other than dirty/clogged fuel systems and injectors but for mine this treatment seems to have done the trick twice. I believe the F150's fuel injection system does become easily fouled. I now use the injector cleaner in every two to three tanks as a precaution.

Jeez,
This is the longest thread I've seen on F150 Online.com. I've had several other notorious F150 problems, and every time I've found someone on this board with the same problem as me. This time, the rough idle got me. Here's my symptoms: Rough Idle in hot & cold weather, after it sat for two weeks during our firstborn's birth, seemed OK at WOT & hard acceleration, check engine light soon after, & serious hesitation during normal acceleration. I first checked Mass air sensor, my air filter, those were ok, then let the computer reset, then I checked the #4 coil pack. Bingo! The coolant leak was present, the coil pack turned out to be bad, the engine code said misfire #4 cylinder, and the spark plug was fouled. After replacing plug & coil, all is well. Thanks, I love you guys.

I took my F150 in again (3x) for the rough idle. Dealer finally said they found a problem. They said two cylinders failed the compression leakdown test. Hmmmm could be the head gasket they replaced last year..... But I got a FQR engine that runs OK other than the knock on the first start of the day.
Wow! I came on line a few days ago to see if any one else was having problems with the 4.6 L idling rough and getting poor fuel economy. After reading a lot of these stories, I have an interesting story..
I bought the truck used with 20K, dual exhaust. I was getting 18.5 MPG in hiway driving I loved the pu and the economy. I had a problem with the u-joints so I had them replaced at a dealer. (42K) When I got the pu back from the dealer I noticed the economy was a lot worse. The fuel economy went from 18.5 to 14 MPG and simultanously I picked up a rough idle. (I thougth this was funny all along) I had new tires put on at 45K. I took it to another dealer in KC the day before I was leaving to drive from KC to PA. They did a complete fuel system check and found no problem. I said that was not good enough so they gave me a discount on a complete fuel system cleaning. The next day it was idling great. I left for PA and about 2 tanks later it was back. Fuel economy was 14 MPG. The idle got so bad during the drive here to PA in March that it actually stalled leaving one of the toll booths. Since March the dealer here in PA has been saying no problem exists...
I have not tried any of these suggested fixes, other than my own fuel system cleaner and fuel upgrades, as I do not see one or multiple fixes that definetly fixes the problem. OR am I not seeing it ??

I am back and with some bad news. The FORD DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD denied me a replacement or a refund. I was hoping they would solve the dispute but they didn't. I will be contacting my lawyer and filing lemon law suit now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not glad to see more people are having the rough idle problem, but the more that add to this topic the more valid my and everyone elses gripe becomes. I will keep everyone informed on my status. Thanks for all the support. I just wish FORD would have given me some. They sure know how to satisfy their customers don't they??
