DON,
JUST WONDERING IF YOU ARE DRIVING MY TRUCK AND TAKING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. I SEE YOU SYMPTOMS ARE VERY SIMULAR TO MINE.
ONLY MINE NEVER GOES THREE DAYS WITHOUT ACTING UP. MINE PRETTY MUCH DOES IT EVERY DAY. SOME ALOT WORSE THAN OTHERS. ONE DAY MAYBE THEY WILL FIND THE FIX FOR US. KEEP THE INFORMATION COMING.

In away I wish it would do it all the time, atleast the dealer could not say CND. Better yet would be for it to just blow up, then atleast it would get fixed. I do know for a fact that a small percent of these trucks do this, I have a 01 Expedition with the 4.6 and it is perfrct all the time, but the 01 4.6 is redesigned too.

Hi everyone,

It's been quite awhile since I posted here but I thought I'd let you know that I got so frustrated with the rough idle problem on my 2000 F150 that I printed every (and I mean every post) from this board and walked into the dealer with a 1 1/2" thick stack of reasons why my truck has a problem. I highlighted some of the more common remarks from the group and started with the EGR pump. I know 36Racin got his changed out and it was a short term fix and the problem came back.

The dealer was floored by all the documentation I brought in an to my amazement offered to change out the EGR under warranty as long as I didn't hold them responsible if it did not solve the problem. Of course I agreed and this was done on 4/11/01. To date, not so much as a shudder in the idle. Maybe, for me at least this fixed it for good.

One thing that I thought you might find interesting is that the dealer needed to get a "calibration code" from my truck in order to get the correct EGR valve. Evidently, there are different valves? This number had to be obtained from Ford as it does not seem to exist anywhere on the truck. Anyway, if anybody is interested, the p/n of the valve they put in is FMC XL3Z 9D475 CA. Best of luck to everyone!

My 4.6L currently has a rough idle, and of course all of the documentation I brought in wasn't enough for them to change their diagnosis of nothing being wrong.

The good thing is that I'm only stuck with the lemon for a couple more days.

36racin,
I think everyone has filed a case with the DSB. For those of you that did it is wise not to talk about it on this site.ford watches this site and not only will they deny they have this problem. They will continue to treat you like a piece of sh*#. Thats their way of showing customer appreciation.

I FIGURED THAT FORD WOULD WATCH THESE BOARDS. IT'S A MIGHTY POWERFUL PLACE. THERE ARE ALOT OF DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS OUT THERE. ESPECIALLY ME AND I KNOW YOU ARE.
I AM STILL GATHERING INFORMATION FOR MY DSB HEARING. AND WAITING FOR SOME INFORMATION FROM MIKE. BEEN LOOKING ALOT AND FINDING ALOT OF TRUCKS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS WE ARE HAVING AND ALOT THAT AREN'T. SO THE CHARACTERISTIC THING IS OUT THE WINDOW AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. FORD NEEDS TO MAKE IT RIGHT ON OUR TRUCKS. THANKS AND KEEP THE INFO COMING.

I ALSO HAD A 00 F150 W/5.4 AND HAD THE SAME
ROUGH IDLE. THESE TRUCKS SEEM TO RUN VERY
LEAN AT IDLE BY DESIGN. MY CURRENT 01 LIGHTNING HAS THE SAME ENGINE WITHOUT THE
SKIPING AT IDLE. THATS JUST HOW THEY ARE.
DONT WORRY ABOUT IT.

Here's one for your rough idle file....
I have a 1997 f-150 4.6 185K miles has been doing great until I got a bad tank of gas! (Pilot station). Warped 3 intake valves, Took the heads and had them redone, of course they had to take off my cam holders to build the heads, had the injectors cleaned and filters changed in them, got new gasket set 200.00!!!!, put this all back together, by the way there is still crosshatch in the cyl. walls, cams speced new , had used my own marks for timing chains. Fired the puppy up and it lopes at an idle after warmup. checked for vac leaks bad wires, hoses, everything. had done leakdown before I put the chains on, but checked compression again!!! Left bank 165Psi on each cyl. right bank 145psi on each cyl. Ford had even charged me for a diagnostic and could not figure out that I was one tooth off, does not show on computer or only codes lean on bank 1 or 2. Have them check comp. all the way around, it might be your problem too!!!!!

You guys have gave me a lot of good info I can use. I currently do not have a rough idle on my 97, but I do work at a parts store and had a customer complianing of the same problems on a different make of car (93 model). Here's a list of what I told him to check/replace, fuel filter, both O2 sensors, MASS sesnor cleaned or replaced, throttle position sensor, idle air sensors, cold start valve, air contorl valve, injectors, check fuel pressure, check igniton modules, PCM/ECM wires, plugs, and etc. Point being that there can be dozens of things that can cause a rough idle or a stall condition and each vehicle is different. I even seen some vehicles that would only run right on the exact plug that came in the car from factory (ie: motorcraft plugs). At the time I did not thin kof the EGR but it could be that too. From the looks of this post it looks like one person or another as tried almost everything. To all of you that are sill working on this problem keep up the good work and you will eventually find the culpert. Also, as someone stated they thought that some of these engines do happen to idle a little rough and called it "normal", IMO I tend to agree to a point.

Here's something that you all haven't thought about or discussed;

-water in your fuel

It's a problem with outboard engines as well, I can attest to it. Same symptoms.

Maybe a water/fuel seperator is the ticket...
