rough idle/engine miss
Just as an update....its been about two months now since I "fixed" my rough idle/miss problem (see page 5 for my previous replys to this topic) and I'm happy to say that the truck is still running good. Swapping out the EGR valve seemed to have done the trick. I've put about 5000 miles on the truck without a single problem.

Thats good news, I changed the EGR on mine and it did not fix it...

My 99 did the same thing, it happened one day out of the blue and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on a few minutes after the problem started. Fortunately it had to go back to the dealer that week because the lease was expired on it. I went back to the dealer a few weeks later to pick up the plates for my new truck and had asked if they had figured out what was up with my old truck. I was told it needed a new engine. I hope this doesn't happen to you guys, but it was the case with me.
And mine is getting worse, and the rear end went out too, that was covered by the extended warrenty, if my truck only idled good it would be perfect.
My 01 Expedition idles like very smooth.

DEVOSE,
GIVE YOUR TRUCK SOME TIME ON THE ROAD. MY TRUCK ALSO RAN BETTER AFTER THE 1ST EGR REPLACEMENT, BUT IT DIDNT LAST LONG. A FEW WEEKS LATER IT STARTED AGAIN. THEY TRIED CHANGING IT AGAIN AND HAD NO LUCK THAT TIME.
KEEP US ALL INFORMED ON YOUR STATUS. THERE ARE ALOT OF UNSATISFIED CUSTOMERS OUT THERE AND MAYBE ONE DAY FORD WILL FIND A FIX. THANKS

I've had the same problem with my 99 for over a year. No matter what mod's I have done, the problem is still there. It's been in to the dealer 4 times -- once "CND", then changed the MAF, then "CND", and finally I took one of the technicians out for a ride and SHOWED him exactly what the hell I had been trying to explain to the tech rep (you know, the guy in the service department who never gets his hands dirty).
Anyway, the tech (who was very cool and forthright) said that the roughness was caused by the computer chip "leaning" the fuel mixture to give better mileage. I'm sure everyone knows that the computer learns from your driving patterns and then makes adjustments to suit your particular pattern (i.e., in an attempt to give the best mileage for your habits). When you disconnect the battery, the computer loses this info and has to re-learn -- and it resets the fuel mixture to "standard" -- and this is where I got back to a nice smooth idle. After a week or so, the computer re-learned the "proper" mix ratio and the roughness returned. It bugs the hell out of me sometimes (it's usually worse right after getting off the freeway -- which makes sense 'cuz the computer leans the mixture out even more on the highway) -- but I've pretty much learned to live with it.
Sorry, this may not be what you wanted to hear. If anyone finds out something different -- something that will fix this problem -- I'd love to hear it, but I'm pretty convinced that there is no "cure".
Jim
P.S. the Superchip did seem to help a little -- I think it tells the computer to enrich the mix ratio a bit.

Hum, I wonder about this, I added a Flowmaster this would reduce back presure and cause a lean if the computer could not compensate, I also added a K&N air filter, this would offer better air flow and add to a lean on idle, If the computer only had a small amout of adjustment in its table then maybe the mods are making more air flow then the computer can compensate for.. If I could prove it I would feel better about it.
To date the Ford dealer has taken care of all the problems with my truck except the ones that I don't them too, Door crack..
I am just going to drive the **** out off my truck and rack up 100,000 miles out of it to get my moneys worth. after that I will sell it and get another truck.. another Ford.. don't know... Probably a Toyota.

GOT MY DSB APPLICATION IN THE MAIL AT THE END OF LAST WEEK. WILL BE SENDING IT IN SOON.
VINCE,
IF THE COMPUTER DOES LEAN THE MOTORS OUT TO HELP WITH FUEL MILEAGE. WHY HASN'T FORD REPROGRAMED THE COMPUTERS SO THAT THE DON'T LEAN UP AS MUCH AND STOP THE ROUGH IDLE PROBLEMS THAT THEY ARE HAVING. IT WOULD SURE TAKE ALOT OF COMPLAINING AND DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS OUT OF THE SYSTEM. WHAT KIND OF GAS MILEAGE ARE YOU GETTING????
MY TRUCK GETS AROUND 12MPG. SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG WITH MINE CAUSE ITS NOT HELPING MY MILEAGE. I HAVE FRIENDS AND COWORKERS THAT HAVE THE SAME TRUCKS AND ARE GETTING 16 TO 18.5 MPG. AND WITH NO ROUGH IDLE. FORDS GOT A PROBLEM. I KNOW IT, YOU KNOW IT, AND THEY KNOW IT. KEEP THE INFORMATION COMING AND ONE DAY WE WILL GET OUR TRUCKS FIXED.

Hi Guys,
My 98 4.6 4x4 S/C had a rough idle and slight hesitation/roughness off idle that seemed to start with a cold start and worse in colder weather. (Vancouver, B.C. Canada)
Anyhow after reading many posts on this site I cleaned my MAF sensor with windex and a Q-tip (clean it very lightly - it is a delicate wire). This avoids fuel injector cleaner taking out your oxygen sensor, etc.
This did not solve the problem.
The hesitation got worse and eventually started happening on the open highway kind of like a momentary loss of power to 80% every so often, and getting more frequent and worse.
I didn't have a code reader and the check engine light came on. (get a code reader!!!)
The dealer did a computer diagnostic, replaced plug wire #3 and plug #3 (I think, front of block on driver's side) and charged me $330.00 Canadian !!!!!!!!! Sheeesh.
Runs fine now. I too thought it may be an oxygen sensor but at $100 a pop (4 of'em) it doesn't make sense to randomly replace them without a code reader.
I have a K&N filter in the factory housing and someone said the oil in the gauze may coat the MAF wire eventually reducing performance so it makes sense to do the windex/Q-tip thing once in a while.
I don't have performance exhaust or anything. Wish I did though.

Most of the truck owners that have this problem are complaining about intermitent rough idle, My F150 has been running fine for the past three days, but the weekend before it was so rough that a friend of mine asked me what was wrong with the truck, he thought it was about to stall, Nope. it just starts to shake and the cleans up.
So, its not a bad plug, would do all the time, not a bad sensor, check light would come on, its not mechanical, would do it all the time, it may be the computer but I can't prove it and the dealer is no help. If no codes when they hook it up the computer its not broke.
