Well, you may think I am crazy but, I traded in my 98 Explorer XLT for a 01 Expedition. Guess what, it has the 4.6 motor and I knew it too. I only have 500 miles on the Expe, but it idle's very smoth, I cant even feel the moter at all. So I guess it will be hard to convince me that the 4.6 just does that now that I have two of em.

I have been following this post for a while and have had the same problem with the rough idle and engine surge. My fuel gauge also quit working while this was going on. I took the truck to the dealer to have the fuel gauge fixed and to trouble shoot the engine problem. I was very sceptical about the outcome. They fixed the fuel gauge and said the wireing harness had a short in that might interfere with the fuel pump. It has been a month and I have driven about 1200 miles and no miss. The idle seems to be low when the ac is on so i might try and idle it up a little. I hope this will help at least one owner. I will let you know it the surge and rough idle show back up.

Cool

The emergence from hell...

Just got back from the dealer where I handed the Finance Manager the keys and in turn, he handed me a refund check from the Ford Motor Company.

I am now the proud "non-owner" of the rough idling '00 5.4 F-150. I filed for Dispute Settlement back on December 20, 2000 and a little over three months later, I'm relieved to say that the system works. This is the second time in five & a-half years I've done battle with Ford and received the ruling in my favor. I can't say that I won because NOBODY really wins. Ford has permanently lost a customer of 16 years and I've lost nearly 11 months of my life gripping over two automobiles with Ford.

If you've had enough yourself, read your owners manual. It tells you how to apply for Dispute Settlement arbitration. If you need advice, post your e-mail address and I'll be happy to assist. For those who still absolutely love their trucks, good luck.

Well it has been a few months since I have posted on this thread and I along with MikeInLA have beaten ford through the dispute settlement board. For two and a half years I have tried to convince ford I have a extremely rough idlier. They insisted it was a normal characteristic. They even offered me an extended warrenty. What will that do when they cannot and will not fix it. During my hearings with the DSB they asked if they could have a independent engineering specilist look at my problem. I replyed not a problem, his analysis was yes my truck does have a above the normal rough idle compared to others and is getting worse by the day. I am in the process of recieving a 100% buy back. Tax,license plates and accesories. This is due to the written work order I have from the dealer when I first reported this problem from day one. You must document your every move and conversation along with your legitimate verified problem. I to will never buy a ford product again. I orderd my new CHEVY last week.

JUST GOT MY TRUCK BACK FROM THE SHOP OFFICIALLY FOR THE SIXTH TIME 3/29/01 AND I AM SAD TO SAY ITS STILL NOT RUNNING ANY BETTER (MAYBE EVEN WORSE THIS TIME) I IMMEDIATELY CALLED FORD CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AND EXPLAINED AGAIN WHAT WENT ON AND INFORMED THEM TO START LEMON LAW PAPERWORK ON MY TRUCK. AND THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTING MY ATTORNEY AND THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR THE STATE OF LOUISIANA ABOUT MY TRUCK. THEY TOLD ME TO WRITE THEM A LETTER STATING MY INTENTIONS AND MAIL IT TO SOME ADDRESS THAT THEY GAVE ME (I'LL LET MY ATTORNEY DO THAT) AND WE WILL GO FROM THERE. ANY INFORMATION YOU ALL CAN GIVE ME AND OTHERS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS AND I WILL KEEP EVERYONE INFORMED.

My wife has a 2K Expy and it now has 17K on it. It has had this problem (rough idle) for about 7 months (8000 miles). It does not seem to matter the temperature of the air and only happens at idle. I am getting ready to take it in for service and see what I can come up with. I would appreciate anybody emailing me about this and I will do the same for you:

It's to bad that this problem is happening to the F150 and Expedition. I like Ford's, but I can honestly say that the rough idle is taring me and my wife down, Its now at the point that she doesn't want to drive it. I can't afford to make payments on a truck that sits in my garage. Looks like I have a hard road ahead, mine is a 97, out of warranty so I may have to sale it and get something other then a Ford, It would be hard for me to sale a truck and not tell the buyer that is has a problem.

BROUGHT MY TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY AND HAD A TALK WITH THE DEALERSHIP GENERAL MANAGER ABOUT THE TROUBLE I AM HAVING WITH IT. HE TALKED WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THE TECH THAT HAS BEEN WORKING ON IT ABOUT MY ROUGH IDLE. WE DECIDED THAT I NEEDED TO GO AHEAD AND FORMALLY CONTACT FORD (BY LETTER) AND BRING MY TRUCK BEFORE THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD. I THOUGHT MAYBE HE WOULD TRY TO SETTLE IT LOCALLY BUT IT DOESNT LOOK LIKE ITS GONNA HAPPEN. SO I WILL CONTACT MY LAWYER AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS FROM HERE. I WILL KEEP YOU ALL INFORMED.

boy u guys sure like to sue, if i was ford i would say pi$$ on it and only sell vehicles were the emision testing is lower, like u know how your trucks have a cat monitor wich to test will actually cause the engine to drop a bank so that it can watch the rear o2 operate and this happens once every drive cycle, try and see how it feels on a 4 banger. Dont worry my truck idles rough too and yes it is annoying to pay that much money for a rough running truck but you could always save up and buy a non mass produced vehicle - if there is such a thing

before you sell your 4.6, let me suggest what helped my 97 f150 4.6 4x2 idle problem. disconnecting the battery didn't help, neither did fuel inj. cleaner or cleaning the throttle plate. what did make a difference was replacing the throttle body. i installed a bbk 75mm throttle body for performance reasons--and the idle is clean and smooth. probably air leaking around the shaft holes? now, mine didn't idle bad from the get-go; just as i put 100,000 miles on the truck. got the bbk from summit.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT. I'VE GOT THE 5.4 IN MY TRUCK. I HOPE THE DEALER HAS DONE ALL THE THINGS THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO DO TO TRY AND GET MY TRUCK RUNNING CORRECTLY. A SERVICE TECH TOLD ME ITS NOT LIKE THE OLD DAYS WHEN THE DEALER JUST STARTED CHANGING PARTS UNTIL THEY FIND THE PROBLEM. FORD WILL NOT LET THEM DO IT. BASICALLY IF THE COMPUTER DOESNT CODE SOMETHING THEN NOTHINGS WRONG IN THEIR EYES. THEN YOU HAVE DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS LIKE ME WHEN MY TRUCK IS RUNNING LIKE A TEN YEAR OLD ONE. I BOUGHT A NEW TRUCK SO THAT I DIDNT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THE HASSLE OF CONTINUIOSLY WORKING ON A OLD ONE. AGAIN THANKS FOR THE IMPUT.

For any of you that like to try things and experiment, here is one. The truck was idling bad one weekend and I wanted to go under the hood. I took off the air box and removed it from the throtle body. I then removed every hose that connected to the TB and inspected it and the replaced it, looking for lose or bad connections. A put every thing back together and the truck idles fine.. Hum, I in noway feel that I fixed anything, Only that I need someone else to do the same and see what the results are.

Let me know
