Water in fuel? You got to be kidding me. From the day I picked up my 1999 ford f-150 with a 5.4 engine it ran terrible. Are you telling me ford put in bad gas at the assembly plant and then for 2 1/2 years I have been so unlucky to be putting in watered down gas in my truck every week. I had the fuel injectors checked, compression checked egr checked timing checked for the suspected one tooth off timing, possible coolant leaks around cyl coil, wiring checked and moved away from A/C, oxygen sensers checked, vacuum leaks checked. I would go on but I would have to pull out all my service records to tell you more. These again let me mention 5.4 not 4.6 engines that have the rough idle are lemons. The Dispute Settlement Board had an independent engineering firm look at my truck and they determined that it was truly a problem that could not be fixed.ford agreed and refunded my money back.

AMEN -- RJ----
I too, have had all those checked -- BUUUUT! my dealer stated they have no way of checking for a bad/borderline injector spray pattern.
All their test can check, according to my dealer, is the correct spray pressure at the individual injectors. If one has a dribble instead of a correct spray (kinda like us older guys)-- the diags can't see it. The bad part is Ford will not change out my injectors -- I have even offered to buy 1 or 2 injectors at dealer cost -- if they will change them out one or two at a time.

WATER IN THE FUEL. I THINK NOT. I WORK FOR ONE OF THE WORLDS LARGEST OIL REFINERS AND NO WHERE DO WE ADD WATER TO OUR GAS WHEN WE SEND IT TO MARKET.
I STARTED THIS TOPIC HERE AND HAVE HAD MY TRUCK IN THE SHOP FOR REPAIRS MANY TIMES. I WAS EVEN TOLD THIS BY ONE OF MY SERVICE TECH'S (WATER IN GAS). I'LL TELL YOU RIGHT NOW I AM NOT BRAND LOYAL TO MY EMPLOYER. I HAVE TRIED JUST ABOUT EVERY KIND OF GASOLINE IN MY AREA AND EVEN SOME THAT ARE NOT WHILE ON TRIPS. NOTHING SEEMS TO HELP.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER IT WAS A COMMON THING FOR US TO POUR WATER DOWN THE CARBURATOR (SMALL AMOUNTS AT A TIME). THIS HELPED CLEAN UP THE CARBON BUILDUP FROM THE CYLINDERS, SPARK PLUGS AND FROM THE TOPS OF THE PISTONS.
BOATS ARE DIFFERENT BECAUSE THE WATER ACTUALLY WASHES THE OIL THAT IS IN THE FUEL OR INJECTED OFF THE CYLINDER WALLS AND OFF THE INTERNAL PARTS AND WILL LOCK UP A MOTOR.
WE JUST WANT OUR TRUCKS RUNNING LIKE NEW TRUCKS SHOULD.

36racin,

I didn't mean to imply that water is habitually added at the refinery. Was I was referring to is that water will condense within a vehicle's (like our trucks) fuel tank, given time. Same thing with a boat, although you probably would get more water in your fuel from a marina rather than a corner side gas station. It is possible to fill with contaminated fuel from a corner gas station.

I didn't understand your previous comment:

"BOATS ARE DIFFERENT BECAUSE THE WATER ACTUALLY WASHES THE OIL THAT IS IN THE FUEL OR INJECTED OFF THE CYLINDER WALLS AND OFF THE INTERNAL PARTS AND WILL LOCK UP A MOTOR."

I don't see what you mean. Are you talking about hydrolock? What I'm talking about is condensation, and it occurs in all fuels that are subjected to temperature changes.

I bet that if you tried a fuel dryer, most of you (all) problems with the rough idle will go away.

Try Redline fuel additive. Or another brand of your favorite fuel dryer. Redline is good stuff, hard to fine though. It'll dry out the fuel. Then run your truck. What do you got to lose?

BTW, I use Redline fuel injector cleanor every 10,000 miles, but that's another story (if you want to get good mileage back). ;-)

An infrequently rough idling engine that doen't follow a rigid patterm for doing so is very suspicious to me. Water in the fuel...old problem, never goes away...

I brought mine in for a idle check, I have the slight roughness when in drive stopped, or if you rev it to 1400-1800 rpm in park. I took and strapped the exhaust system to restrict any movement, too no avail.I also looked into the many fixes on this board, and at tsbs everywhere. It just started on day, its not a big deal, but WTF, why? I am thinking maybe the fan clutch, it does seem more pronounced when it is warm.

hi markmizzou
yyou have to go to an injector shop that has a hartridge or bosch injector cleaner. the machine does check spray pattern and output. those are bosch injectors on the or 5.4 or the 4.6. will cost about 12.00 + 4.00 for new filter and o rings each. QUOTE]Originally posted by Markmizzou:

36, your truck sounds like it has similar problems to what mine had last summer. Stumbing, stalling, rough idle... Does that sound familiar?

At the time the dealer was more than willing to work with me and finally after getting very frustrated at the problem ended up replacing the *ENTIRE* fuel system, from the tank to the injectors.

That was a permanent, albeit drastic fix though. But I find this interesting in light of the reports of bas gas/water in gas being blamed as the cause. As well as meantion of a faulty injector or 2 as well. In my case, in the end they blamed a materials problem on the gas causing it to shed and contaminate the fuel system.

Who knows. But good luck anyhow!

WJT,
SORRY I DIDN'T MEAN TO CONFUSE YOU WITH THE BOAT THING. ALL I MEANT IS WATER AND BOAT ENGINES DON'T MIX. ALITTLE WATER WILL CAUSE ALOT OF TROUBLE IN A MARINE ENGINE.
MANY OF US HAVE TRIED ALOT OF THINGS TO GET OUR TRUCKS RUNNING CORRECTLY. MY TRUCK HAS PERSONALLY BEEN IN THE SHOP 6 TIMES NOW AND I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PUT OUT ONE DOLLAR OF MY MONEY FOR IT TO GET REPAIRED. I PAID $21,000 FOR A NEW TRUCK BECAUSE I DIDNT WANT THE COST OF REPAIRS MY OLD TRUCK MAY HAVE NEEDED. FORD SHOULD TRY IT IF THEY TRUELY WANT OUR TRUCKS FIXED. THEY SHOULD BE TRYING EVERYTHING KNOW TO FIX OUR TRUCKS. THE CUSTOMERS ARE NOT GETTING THE QUALITY SERVICE THAT THEY SHOULD BE GETTING.
THANK FOR THE INFORMATION AND KEEP IT COMING.

Well I posted on here a while ago...I have had all the same problems that most everyone has had...I have a 99 5.4l. Mine feels like it is about to stall all the time at idle, in gear or out of gear. Mine exhaust even smells bad at idle, like it is running rich or a plug is fouled. I had the head gaskets replaced and had the coolent leak fixed and pretty much everything everyone else had. I have had it to the dealer 5 times for rough idle and they keep telling me it is normal and not getting the codes. I even tried to take it to another dealer but they would not look at it and said ford would not pay them and i had to take it back to where I was going.

Well I have had enough. I contacted a lawyer and am getting the lemon law on fords ***. I am close to detroit so maybe I will just drive up there and give them the keys back.

I even called the costumer service number the last time and they told me they made an appointment for me at the dealer after having me on hold for 20 mins. God was I pissed off at that one.

I have 27,000 miles on my truck and it runs worse than my 10 year old ranger did before I got this one.

FIREDOG,
SAME HERE ALL I GET IS THE RUN AROUND. I TRIED CONTACTING MY DEALER THRU EMAIL ONLY TO FIND OUT LATER THAT THEY HAVE A NEW WEB ADDRESS THAT NO ONE KNEW OF. ONLY AFTER REPEATED CALLS TO THE DEALERSHIP DID I FIND OUT THE CORRECT WEB SITE AND EMAIL ADDRESS.
I AM DOING THE SAME AS YOU ARE. ONLY ACCORDING TO LOUISIANA LEMON LAW I HAVE TO GO THRU THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD FIRST. THEN IF I AM NOT SATISFIED I CAN SUE.
LIKE YOU I HAD A 92 F150 WITH OVER 160,000 MILES THAT RAN BETTER THAN MY 99 F150 DOES. I GET MORE DISGUSTED BYE THE DAY. EVERY TIME I USE MY TRUCK I GET ALITTLE MADDER. THESE NEW TRUCKS SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THE PROBLEMS OURS ARE HAVING. IF I HAD KNOWN I WOULD HAVE THIS MUCH TROUBLE I WOULD HAVE KEPT MY OLD ONE. THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION AND KEEP US INFORMED.
