rough idle/engine miss
P_FERLOW,
I HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING OTHER THAN DRIVE MY TRUCK, SERVICE IT WHEN NEEDED AND KEEP PAYING PAYMENTS ON A TRUCK THAT HAS RAN BAD SINCE AROUND 4000 MILES. IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR ATTEMPED REPAIRS MANY TIMES WITH NO LUCK AT ALL. I TOOK MY CASE BEFORE THE FORD DISPUTE RESOLUTION BOARD (TWICE) AND THEY TOOK THE WORK OF AN INDEPENDENT ENGINEER THAT NEVER RAISED THE HOOD OF MY TRUCK, NEVER DROVE THE TRUCK OR NEVER DID A THROUGH INSPECTION OF THE TRUCK. HE EVEN CAME AND RODE WITH ME DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY WHEN MY TRUCK USUALLY DOESN'T EXIBIT THE ROUGH IDLE AS BAD OR AS MUCH. I PAID A GREAT DEAL FOR A NEW TRUCK AND WHAT I GOT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. I WOULD RATHER HAD KEEP MY OLD TRUCK THAN BOUGHT THIS ONE, IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN. POINT IS I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO REPAIR A TRUCK THAT WAS UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. THAT'S WHAT I BOUGHT A NEW TRUCK FOR. FORD MUST WANT TO DRIVE CUSTOMERS AWAY. THEY SURE AS HELL GOT ME LOOKING THE OTHER WAY NOW. SORRY FOR THE VENTING. I GET ALITTLE MAD JUST THINKING ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION.

I tried to use the Fl. lemon law to get my rough idle fixed but they turned me down due to the 2 year rule. Now I'm stuck. I've been catching up today on all the action (or lack of action on Ford's part). I'm going to take my truck into the local Lincoln/Mercury place in a few weeks and see what they say. It's still under warranty for a few more months. If they can't fix it then I'll take it to another Ford dealer for a look. The extended warranty from warrantybynet.com sounds like a good investment. My wife says trade it for a Toyota Tundra. I really don't want to, but this WILL be my last Ford in my lifetime. See what happens.
I have the 4.6 in a 97 and went through many problems of mis-diagnosing and replacing parts that did not need fixing(about 6 trips for the same problem), It came down to be the mass air flow sensor. I did not see what you had for engine but thought I'd try to help. Good luck
Wantmorespeed,
I have 5.4 in my truck and they did change my mass air flow sensor, the IAC unit, and someother parts I can't remember off the top of my head. They also did the standard test (I hope they did because they said they did) with no luck at all with my truck. I just want to know why FORD is replacing some trucks for this same problems and not all the trucks with the problem?

I saw this list of TSBs out on another forum.
Here is the fairly extensive list of Recall items and service bulletins on the 99 F-150 with the 5.4 Triton V-8 .....................
NOTICE TSB 01-12-2 "Head Gasket - Right Hand Side Oil Leak"
What this means is that it is a problem Ford is VERY aware of , but did not recall for . I heard the "OFFICIAL" fix was a thicker head gasket , however many failures were reported after the "FIX" and many guys have said they were given a new , updated engine , by dealers that knew the fix would not hold .

I've had rough idle problems since day 1 with my 2001 4.6 I was told last year Ford was working on a fix (motor mounts & a new flash for the computer). I finally had the changes done last week and while it's not perfect it is significantly better. The vibration in the cab at an idle is much better. Don't know how widely available this is. Hope it helps
Had my '01 5.4L in for the motor mount / recalibration TSB (1-24-8)- definite improvement. TSB is for SIR seats which really vibrated and shook from the day I took delivery. A co-workers Non-SIR truck w/ the 5.4 is smooth as silk. Go figure.
Guys JHerron Hit the nail on the head
The computer learns your driving style and adjust its self from that info. Can yall not see when you take your truck to the dealer they wipe out the existing things that the computer has learned, thats why it runs smooth for a little while. This is just like the trannys in our trucks learn how you drive and adjust to that for you firmness and when and where its makes its shifts. I had a 2000 4.6 150 that had a rough idle, my buddies 2000 4.6 rough idled but mine was way more noticable and i drive with my foot to the floor more than most of you do, how every he kind of babied his arround. If you read the owners manual it tells you about the self adjusting tranny, I havent looked to see if it says anything about the computer recalibrating its self for driving. I never looked at my 2000 owners man. all this info came out of the 2002 one. And two diffrent dealers said the triton motors have a bit of a rough idle to them after the computer learns you. So when i bought my 2002 i expected it even though its a 5.4. What a small price to pay to own the best. If it bothers yall that much buy a car with the 4.6 they dont have a rough idle. Its a truck not a prissy car if you want a car like run and drive then get a car, and leave our rough riding, rough idling, hard working trucks alone.
ROUGH IDLE
Just traded into a 2000 F150 XLT SPORT 4X4 regular cab with 38,000 miles on it. On the 2nd day of ownership I started to experience the rough idle problems described by others on this forum. Took the truck into the Ford dealer shop today and they replaced the # 8 cylinder coil. So far the problem has been fixed ,but will wait and see...............
I showed the service writer some of the posts from this forum and a list of the possible fixes. He took my list , but brushed off doing any fixes that they "FORD?" did not deem necessary.....
He said Ford would not do fixes based on someone's web site etc...........
Thanks for all the info provided by others who have posted.
By the way replacing a coil was one of the fixes i had listed ,but he said it was picked up by the diagnostics.

The only thing I can think of is that some people have great dealers to deal with and the rest of us aren't so lucky. I hope you find the problem and by the way I have a extended (10 year 100,000 mile) warranty with GE capitol and have been very pleased. I get free rental car and have never been hassled about anything. Good luck.
What exactly are the symptoms?
I have a 1999 F150 4x4 with the 5.4. I have had the truck for approximately 1 month. The day after I got it I noticed a burning oil smell and took it back to dealer. To make a long story short, the dealer put a brand new 5.4 crate motor in the truck at no charge to me due to the head gasket issue. Now it runs great except for one thing. When at idle I notice a slight bumping from the motor. It feels like an ever so slight miss, but my tach never moves. Is this a big deal? Should I even worry about it? I have put approximately 1000 miles on the new engine and it hasn't gotten any worse or better. A friend has a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V-8 and his vehicle (I know this is apples to oranges) does the exact same thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This may not be much help, but at least take it into the dealer and explain the problem as they may have an answer and a fix.
I bought an extended warranty and the dealer acted as if it would not cover replacing the coil pack ,but it did and it cost me nothing but a few hours.

JVB,
WELCOME TO THE ROUGH IDLE CLUB FOR FORD F-150'S. I WISH I COULD TELL YOU THING WILL GET BETTER, BUT THEY PROBABLY WON'T (SORRY). ALL I CAN SAY IS KEEP RETURNING THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER, KEEP ALL RECIEPTS, MAKE A LOG OF WHO, WHEN, WHERE AND THE TOPIC'S YOU TALKED ABOUT. IF IT COMES TO BRINGING YOUR TRUCK BEFORE THE DISPUTE SETTLEMENT BOARD THE MORE PAPERWORK YOU HAVE THE BETTER OFF YOU WILL BE. IF YOU CAN STAND THE ROUGH IDLE THEN JUST IGNORE IT. SOME HAVE TOLD US TO JUST SUCK IT UP AND DEAL WITH IT BUT WE ALL SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF $$$$$$ ON OUR TRUCKS. SOME BOUGHT NEW AND OTHERS NOT. THEY SHOULD RUN AS NEW OR BE REPAIRED TO RUN AS NEW. IF IT IS TRULY A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 5.4 ENGINE THEN WHY DOESN'T ALL THE 5.4'S HAVE THE SAME ROUGH IDLE PROBLEM, RUN THE SAME, OR GET THE SAME GAS MILEAGE?? GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR TRUCK, KEEP US INFORMED ON ANY STATUS CHANGES ON YOUR TRUCK.

36Racin,
I took my truck to another local dealer here in Birmingham (different than the one I bought it from) to check out the rough idle. The asst. service manager came and sat in my truck and did notice my rough idle. I left it there and he just called me back. He said that the coils were fine. He said his mechanic found a vaccuum leak on the back of the block and is going to replace the hose where the leak is coming from. He also said they are going to re-flash my computer. Hopefully this will fix it, but I am a little skeptical. I will give it a week and see what happens. I'll post back on Monday and let you know how this turns out.
