Damn thats a long list. If you do not see your screen name on it, feel free to post it here. This is my way of contributing to the Lightning crowd. Well, one of my ways.

Here's some info. Most of you guys know of the BON complaint form, located here,

BTW, just like to add, I think they played a big part with the 99 Cobra Fiasco. Ford must wish the internet wasn't invented, that way all the dealerships can brush off each and every customer. I am not kidding when I say I'll be there if someone needs someone to show up to court.

Now for some revised number crunching. I am still quite surprized that blue oval news got similar results as I did, consisdering I published mine first. That just adds fuel to the fire. That info is located here, 1999-2000 Lightning F150 Intercooler Failure

Total number of different people that posted whether or not they had intercooler leaks

Aprox. : 121

Total that posted NON-LEAKING intercoolers:

Aprox : 42

Total that posted atleast ONE LEAKING INTERCOOLER

Aprox: 121-42= 79

Percentage of posters that have atleast ONE leaking intercooler : 79/121= 65%

Percentage of intercoolers that Ford says have leaks:

Aprox. 1%

Keep in mind I said Aprox. I can count good, its my eyes that loose their spot. But I can say with confident that I am not off by more than 10%, much less 64%!

Total mileage out of NON-LEAKING intercoolers OR pre-LEAKING intercoolers (see clonetek example below)

Aprox. : 423.9k miles

Number of Lightnings that reported no leaks, or no leak then updated with bad news:

Average mileage that does not have a leak OR last known mileage before detected LEAK such as cloneteks case, 16k miles before leak, and 16.5k miles with leak:

Aprox: 423.9/44= 9.6k miles

Note: many of these are with low miles, so these numbers only represent the fact that the odds are very good that a Lightning with 9.6k miles WILL NOT have a leaking intercooler

Approx. total mileage of Lightnings with leaking intercoolers:

Aprox: 1,153.45k miles

Aprox number of Lightnings with leaking intercoolers:

Aprox: 76

Average mileage: Aprox: 1153.45/76=15.17k miles (thats not very many.)

Number of Lightnings that reported more than one leak on this list AND mileage of noticed leak on second intercooler:

Aprox. 4

Mileage of first intercooler leak for these 4

Average mileage of second leak: Aprox: 22.6k miles Thats scary.

Average mileage gotten out of the second intercooler: 10.1k miles

Percentage of all posters that had a leak before 20k miles:

60/121= 49.5%

Percentage of Lightning owners that didn't have leak, and recorded more than 20k miles, reporting a NON-LEAKING intercooler:

2/121= very small percentage.016%

Percentage of all Lightning owners that reported a non leaking intercooler above 20k miles, OR a leaking one notice with more than 20k miles:

17/121= 14%

Percentage of posters with leaks that had a leak before 20k miles:

60/76= 78%!

Percentage of Lightning owners that have had a leak before 30k miles:

75/76= 98%

The last one is suspect. It was bought used. If you were selling a truck with a serious problem, would you fix it, or just fill up the tank? Hope this helps fellows.

You may note in one place I stated there were 79 Lightings that had leaks, and that I used 76 as the denominator. Reason being, some mileage was unknown in aprx. 3 cases.

(79 is already close to 1% of all 99-00 production numbers, but this is one small site)

These numbers could very well be quite inaccurate. Please feel free to double check my work, and post what you find, should you find differently.

built 02/00 noticed leak at 17,500. Now at 18,000. Level has gone down 4" in 500 miles. Intercooler RIP.

 

When did Scarpello say the thing about 1%? If he said it quite awhile ago, it might have been true, but not anymore!

 

SVT even told me that at this years Detroit Auto Show in Jan. They were well aware of the BB. I asked him how all 1% made it to this board. He could only say that there wasn't very many of us that had leaks. I told him to check again.

 

18,000 miles just started leaking two weeks ago. Only 6-8 ounces a week, but the way it sounds it'll get worse. Hopefully I can hold out for the new and improved model. (If it ever comes)
