OK, I don't even know what I am doing in this thread, because I do not own a Lightning. BUT, I just have to put my 2cents in. I drive a 95 and looking at the mods the original poster has on his truck, I bet the mods cost him more than my entire truck cost me. And now the dude is complaining because he cannot afford a new engine to replace the one he broke? Sorry, you shouldn't have spent all that money to break it.
As to all the people encouraging him to give it a try to take it in for warranty work-- just because your uncle's roommate had a Ford that was a clunker, the paint peeled up on, etc doesn't entitle this guy to a free engine. We are talking about HIS lightning. That one, right there. No one else's. And the warranty work and whether the dealership would or wouldn't make money is beside the point. The main issue, the only issue, is this guy blew up his engine doing something he shouldn't have been doing. Period. Now, as to the "Ford is a big company they can afford it" stuff, as has been pointed out several times, this is a flawed line of thinking. The money comes from somewhere, and in the end it's the next person who walks into the dealer. I work for a big company in the claims department and can tell you the 'little drop in the bucket' claims add up QUICK.
SO, bottom line-- to the original poster. Take care of it yourself, don't foist this off on everyone else. In the end you'll be able to hold your head up and know you did the right thing. Just because there may be an 'easy' way out doesn't mean you should take it.
That's my (admittedly unsolicited) opinion, but only you can decide for yourself. Good luck whichever way you decide to go.

Oh the politics. I might as well join in. This country was founded for the power of the people. Now it is the power of the dollar. The ones who cry about this guy's ethics need to cry to the corporations themselves. Their ethics are much worse. I don't condone what this guy wants to do nor do I care but why don't we complain and email the higher ups about how they screw the little guy which they do plenty of. So stop worrying about this one person and let him do what he wants. Cry to the big dogs first.

What came first, the chicken or the egg? Why do corps screw us? Because we screw them. Why do we screw them, because they screw us. Who started it? Who cares. Bottom line is by people doing this makes (insert automaker here) try harder and harder to deny claims and pad prices. I don't know why people don't just be accountable for their actions instead of trying to get something for nothing. I bet the same people sue when they get in an accident. Free money ... it's the American way! Some in this thread have reaffirmed my faith in my fellow man, while others acted pretty much as I expected.

Well, I guess based on these posts there are two schools of thought. Which ever one applies to you there is one important thing to remember:
Costs will ALWAYS be passed on to the consumer!
So, go ahead. Get your new motor. We'll all pay for it.
Early on in this post I talked about todays society and cheating state of mind. It is so easy to tell from their posts who has a todays society state of mind.
I have a feeling that the people on here who think that he should screw Ford also have 50 cent as their hero and wear their baseball caps backwards

OD1010,
IMO you have a responsibility to own up to the mods that were on the truck at the time of ka-boom.
Chances are they won't cover it...
Here is what *I would do* if in your shoes. (sounds like you don't have much money for this "fix")
I'd buy a used long block and put it in yourself. The savings in labor costs will enable you to buy the needed tools. And the *work* you have to go through will make a feller (namely you) take more care in driving the truck.
If you shopped around I bet you could do the whole job for about $2000.
btw: If I were in your area I'd lend a hand in the R&R. I'm not... but maybe some of our east coast lightning brothers who are could step up and give ya a hand.
Regards,
Rich

I think everyone is going the wrong way on this. First of all FORD ********* us on the connecting rods. They put good ones in the cobra which is a SVT, so why not put good ones in the L for the price that they charge us for one. Hell I would of paid the extra $1000 if they did that cause that is probably what they would of charges us. The only thing I think that FORD did right is with the tranny. I still have the stock tranny in mine and I run 10's. I have been ********* by FORD before so I know where he is coming from. I know you have to pay to play, but with only doing a few mods to a truck and it shooting a rod is just to much for me. I have did many motors on these truck and I see the same issue time and time again. You see guys modding their cobras all of the time and not have issues like we all do with are L. So good luck on getting a new engine. I don't know about all of you, but I don't like throwing away money.

That truly sucks monkey a$$
