For me to maintain breathing and for my heart beating is completely involuntary, they require little effort on my part. Eating, sleeping, etc sometimes require some effort but I have never found either “especially eating” very difficult.

We can group all this into the same group.
Though there are many beliefs out there, no one has came back to tell me the answer to any of these personally. With the lack of tangible evidence, then I must conclude that these are questions that every individual must search their inner self and answer for them self’s.

While the rate of blinking varies from person to person, also by occupation, as well as an individuals environmental, health, and psychological variables. On the average a person will blink 17,000 times in one day, or once very five seconds.

Blinking is actually a very interesting action, usually involuntary. Indicating it is either physicall or sub conscious induced action/reaction to an external stimuli. However it doesn’t have to be either/or, it is most likely both.

But neither really have any bearing on the question so let’s look at how long it takes to blink.

The average time it takes for a complete human blink is about 300 to 400 milliseconds or 3/10ths to 4/10ths of a second. Of course this is an average only and can differ from person to person. Also, there are other factors that can affect blink speed, like fatigue, medications, diseases, and injury to the eye area. Most factors decrease or slow the blink rate.

If anything were to happen in such a short period of time that would cease your ability to live. Chances are that even if you hadn’t blinked you would not have had time for your mind to process the information from the optical nerves and send an appropriate signal to the appropriate muscles in you body to save your life. So the answer would be, no, so far you have never missed anything even remotely important due to blinking. But if you ever do, then you are probably better off anyway because you may not want to see it.

People pick their favorite color based on the feeling that it generates to them. This feeling can be implanted through various situations, circumstances, and stimuli thru out your life thus far. Any of which can change each person preferences many times thru out life. Before we can delve into the “why” of your question then we have to find out some more information.

Is it all blues or just certain shades of blue?
If it’s just certain shades, what shade?
What do you feel when you see that color?
What do you think of when you see that color?

There are no mysteries in life, only unexplored interest and points of curiosity. Once the knowledge is gained then it always makes perfect sense.

My question is this:
Why does the biggest fish in the sea eat the smallest fish in the sea?

Dear Peladu,
Thank you for your question, I’m sure Kobi would much more likely have this information. But I’ll try as best I can to answer your question. Never having lived near a sea I know little about it's wildlife. My initial response was "because it can". But I decided to do a little research and found this.

The largest fish in the seas today is the Whale Shark, of tropical waters around the world. It can grow to more than 17 metres and weigh over 15 tonnes.

The dwarfgoby (Trimmatom nanus) is the smallest marine fish and is believed to be the smallest vertebrate in the world. The species live at depths of 20-30m in the west Indian Ocean and mature females reach only 8-10mm.

Bare in mind that Whales can grow larger than the whale shark but whales are mammals so they are not fish. Apparently the Whale shark is a filter feeder, so it would not eat another fish. If it accidentally did, then it would likely spit it back out. Even if it did eat another fish I am sure that something like the dwarfgoby, does not venture far from it's home. Probably stays in tight quarters in rocks and other cover that larger predators can not get to. Not to mention smaller fish tend to be faster and more agile than larger fish so if they are caught in the open, escape is likely.

It is my understanding that there are few fish that feed inter-species. Which means that there are very few cannibalistic fish that will eat another fish. It is also my understanding that the few that there is either, hunt in schools and attack larger fish with their large groups. Or cannibalistic fish will hunt fish that are only slightly smaller than them self’s because they are equals in speed and agility, but their prey does not have the defenses that the cannibalistic fish has.

So I guess the answer to your question is "much to my surprise", they don't.

I don’t know why this surprises me; in nature size of the animal has little to do with the offense/defense tactics of a creature.
I have witnessed a 6” long Yellow Jacket make a 2000lb Brauma bull jump a 6-strand barbwire fence before.
Why?
Because the Yellow Jacket had heart, a weapon, was willing to use it, the bull knew it, and he didn't want anything to do with it. That is the key to survival!

I hope this helps...

Sincerely,
PSS-Mag

So I've skimmed thru this thread from time to time ( notice, I said skimmed) but haven't read the entire thing. After reading the last few posts, pondering the meaning of life, and why this? and why that? A question came to mind.

When I sneeze..you say "bless you" when I pass gas or burp, you laugh, giggle or call me gross, when I blink, you do nothing...But, why is it that when I yawn ( or actually talk about yawning )you yawn, the guy next to you yawns, if your on the phone and yawn out loud the person on the other end yawns. This chain reaction can go for miles, days, months.....

I bet your yawning right now.

Dear Kobi:

Is it possible to reverse the advances of technology so that we can eliminate those that are dependent upon it.....more specifically....can we elimanate those whe have evolve to the point that they have cellphones integrated into their heads?

BREWDUDE,
Thank you for your question.

This phenomenon is called Contagious Yawning.

The actual reason behind this behavior is still being studied and not yet under stood. It has even been observed in monkeys too as you can see in this video Monkey Contagious Yawn .

Until recently this phenomenon had been accredited to Mirror Neurons in the brain. This is the part of the brain that induces many of the monkey see, monkey do behaviors. However the Finnish government recently funded a brain scanning study.

The results of these study turned up some hard-to-interpret, possible clues. It confirmed the obvious: yawn contagion is largely unconscious. Wherever that it might affect the brain, it bypasses the known brain circuitry for consciously analyzing and mimicking other people’s actions. (AKA Mirror Neurons) as previously thought. They are not able to find a link to any activity in the brain involved what so ever with the yawning process.

They have found that contagious yawning does not rely on brain mechanisms of action understanding. It seems to be an “‘automatically’ released (and most likely very archaic) motor pattern,” or sequence of physical actions.

So for now the cause is basically left to opinions and theories, but does not seem to have a real reason or thought filled logic behind the reaction.

It will indeed be interesting to learn what they find out as they continue to research Contagious Yawning phenomenon. Until then we will continue to enjoy large breaths of fresh air whenever we witness someone else yawn.

Sincerely,
PSS-Mag

Dear Frustrated in STL,

I understand your frustration and believe me it is shared among many "including myself".

I am not at liberty to suggest installing cellular jammers in your truck and at your office do to FCC laws and regulations. However that might ease your anxiety by minimizing the annoyance in your environment.

A more complex solution would involve traveling backwards at the speed of light. Which as discussed in one of the September Columns, might allow us to travel back in time. We would have to go back to at least to the 70's and interrupt all studies on cellular radio frequency. The result might be that it keeps wireless communication advances to CB/AM/FM/UHF/VHF. However the negatives are it would eliminate Microwave ovens, satellite TV as we know it, as well as WI-FI. All forms of RF's of which I personally have grown fond of. I am sure there are more that I am unaware of.

So my vote will be that we might reach a point sometime in the near future, where this is plausible. But that we should take the good with the bad and leave it alone, so that I might still have my microwave dinners.

Sincerely,
PSS-Mag
