This really sucks. Ford issued the following:

20780 1997-2009 MULTIPLE VEHICLE - 4.6L/5.4L - ENGINE TICKING AND/OR RATTLE NOISE
MULTIPLE VEHICLE LINES WITH 4.6L OR 5.4L ENGINE MAY EXPERIENCE AN ENGINE TICKING OR RATTLE NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE A STUCK TAPPET (HLA). THIS MAY BE DUE TO THE DETERIORATION OF AN AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER. VEHICLES WITH THIS CONDITION HAVE LOW OIL PRESSURE AT ONE CYLINDER HEAD ONLY, WHILE MAIN PRESSURES ARE NORMAL. DISLODGED MATERIAL FROM THE AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER BLOCKS THE CAM CAP OIL PASSAGE, EITHER AT CYLINDER #4 (RIGHT BANK REAR) OR CYLINDER #5 (LEFT BANK FRONT).FOR VCT EQUIPPED ENGINES, INSPECT THE VCT VALVE BODY AND THE OIL PASSAGES UNDER THE FIRST CAM CAP. FORD RECOMMENDS THE USE OF FORD APPROVED FILTERS ONLY. DAMAGE TO ENGINES CAUSED BY AFTERMARKET OIL FILTERS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.
EFFECTIVE DATE: 05/25/2009

Note the effective date. But did anybody get a notice in the mail? To add to the confusion, I went to the Filter Council Website which is the governing body that controls the filter products you buy and the products the manufacturers specify and got this:
http://www.filtercouncil.org/uploads...ish/85-1R2.pdf

It pretty much says this is BS. Ford has issued no list publicly that I can find that states what filters are not approved or filters that are approved including Motorcraft. Nor can I find any filtering criteria or ADV specs from Ford. I'm gonna follow this up with some fiends of mine that are research scientists in this particular field. This appears to be more of Ford covering their backsides with a meaningless bulletin.

TX05F150, I'd ask for a letter from the dealer stating that the cause of the failure is the after market filter. I'm betting money you won't get one.

I'd just put a motorcraft on there and see how long it'll go. My beater car has a knock that's been there for close to 30k miles and hasn't got worse, and i'm running walmart cheapo oil AND filter

Interesting and I learned something too I guess. Having said that it seems asnine in some ways that one is locked into a certain brand filter too. Hell, for all I know the big F did it on purpose to avoid warranty . Just kiddin' (I hope) in comment but God almighty - you in La-La Land and only Fram or similar around what you gonna do? Guess I should be asking if this is a quirk to the F only. Spare me in saying Volvo, etc as that's to be expected due to where they come from. Let's keep it to the Dirty 3 - F unique here?

Hit 221K on my '99 F 150 o'er weekend. She's feeling her age right now with U joints, some seal leakage, and such. Owes me nothing for sure. Want to pamper her and do 300K to say it could so might toss the $$ at her. Plus - who wants a payment nowadays? I'm not in the mood for one anyway....

not trying to get in a pissing contest but i work on a lot more fords than i do chevys. and the chevys are usually small problems, unlike the fords, blowing spark plugs out of cylinder heads and cops going bad before 60k and u cant just replace 1 you have to do all of them. thats why when i did my 4.6 to 5.4 swap before the 5.4 went in all of the spark plug holes got heli-coiled and i kept the duel coil/wires setup

Heli coils are worse than the original threads. The original threads will not come out if proper torque is used. Heli coils will come out whenever they feel like it.
At least you are a mechanic and enjoy fixing your Ford.

Labnerd that was an interesting piece you found. I actually know a guy who is the service manager at Ford in Beaumont, Texas and he said pretty much the same thing. That if Ford or the warranty company tried to pull a fast one about the oil filter to tell them to show me in writing where it says I have to use a Motorcraft oil filter otherwise my warranty is voided. At this point I just want my truck back I finally picked up a rental its a Hyundai Sonata lol I am definitely not the car type I just can't be that low to the ground. Anyways now the dealer is telling me that he cannot get a hold of **** at the warranty company that he has left several messages and no response. So I asked for this guys extension and left him a message giving him an ear full. So who knows maybe we will get a call back now. The dealer said that these 3rd party warranty companies can sometimes be a pain to get a hold of.

So the dealer finally got in touch with someone at the warranty company. Apparently he said the warranty company was obviously pissed that the phasers and lifters didn't do the truck and they are out almost $3000. So they now want to send ANOTHER inspector out to talk to the shop foreman at Ford and figure out what to do. The dealer said that he doesn't really see any way around either getting a new engine or used. When he said used that scared me a little bit. Where would they get these used motors from and how am I supposed to know what type of condition this motor is in?? Are there certain questions I should ask if they do want to give me a used motor??

I'd really want the 08+ engine that has the redesigned heads and supposedly they also have fixed the cam phaser problem. If theres any way you can swing that if it were me I'd even chip in to get it done.
