first time post
Just surfing the other day for chiltons book, found this site.Interesting!I have a 1998 f-150 xlt 4.6 liter triton v-8. Bought from enterprise rental car agency in 2000, with 20,000 miles on it at the time. Now have 204,000. Original motor, transmission, the work's. The only thing iv'e done is change the oil, filter, air filter, spark plug's once, just rutine type maitenance. And of course drove the wheels off a time or two. Been a great truck. However,my job provided me with a company work truck so, " ole bessy" as i call er' has been sittin for several months.Had to change battery, which i think is original, but anyway, flushed and changed antifreeze. Seem's to be a little white smoke from tail pipe when idling. Hope this is just burn off the top of cylinder. So anyway, just a little something for all you f-150 fan's to chew on.GO FORD!

Maintenance is the fountain of youth...
Your truck should be ok, I am sure you can make the long trip over 200k.
The fact that I work in a Ford dealership helps alot. The oil gets change no passed 3000 miles, tranny gets drain and refill once a year (M5OD), differential is serviced every 30k, brake fluid gets flush at least once a year, coolant gets drained/refilled before it gets dark, and the front wheel bearings get repacked at least once a year.
So far the A/C system has never been service/touched. The engine pulleys are original and they started to make some noise when the truck starts.
When in service 98% of all replaced parts had been OEM Ford/Motorcraft.
However, it has been a rough way...
Travelled 9 states, helped 8 families move, 4 fender benders (no damage), survived one minor collision with a Ranger (who was at fault), Flooded and survived during tropical storm Allison in 2001 (both Ford emblems under water), 2 tropical hurricane evacuations (Katrina 8 hours/Rita 13 hours), one minor hail stom (No damage), and of course daily use...
Production date October 20, 1998
I bought it December 29, 1998 with 4 miles
10 years later with over 292K, I think I will drive it until it retires.

Where did you find the exact production date? I found my month and year, but no day?

I just called the Ford customer line, gave her the VIN and she told me the exact day it was built. They can also tell you if in needs or has had any recall work done on it.

1997 XL F150, 4.2L auto trans. All original except new alternator & belt last summer. She even takes a beating on my county road in Arkansas. Still tight chassie and no rattles. Just turned over 104K miles. Runs smooth and nice. No oil burning.
Hell, she's just getting broke in.

2002 XLT 134,000 and climbing. Had to replace the windshield wiper motor in an ice storm when it was a year old. Keep getting the P017 & P0174 error codes but on an iregular basis. I'll find the vacumn leak some where. Oil changed every 3,000 miles and tire rotation every other oil change. Still on my second set of tires, counting the ones that came on it. Even tows good. Trailered 2 mustangs from Dallas to Phoenix and 1 from Phoenix to Dallas. Stiil gets 18 mpg and never used a drop of oil. Oil pressure still just as good as the day I drove it off the lot. Couldn't ask for a better truck.
