Just a little tip also when your bottom end starts to fail it dosesn't ping, it KNOCKS!
And most of the time when that happens your top end doesn't have a chance to fail because a connecting rod will exit the block. I don't know where your info and really don't care but before you post check out how reliable your source is. Saves a lot of grief. While your at it go ahead a get abusive to us so you can get banned from the site a we can get back to what this site is for.......F-150 OWNERS discussing their trucks.

I own a 2000 Chevy Silverado 5.3 and a 1999 Ford F150 ext cab 5.4. Chevy made an TV advertising blitz with the redesigned Silverado and my wife wanted one. They are both great trucks and both have their weak and strong points. I give both trucks a A+. However I am puzzled why GM is staying with the dated design pushrod V8s. GM invented the small block V8 and I would expected them to be the leader rather than the follower in engine technology. The Toyota Tundra's lexus 4.7L engine is absolutely state of the art and with proper maint. should last 250,000 miles. The Ford Triton's design should fare just as well. I am a Ford fan but in the 60s, and 70s power struggles Mopar ruled, GM took second and Ford brought up the rear if you don't count the exotic dual OHC Shelbys. You'll never catch me in a new Dodge vehicle because other than Yugo, Dodge has the worst reliabilty record in the solar System.

For everyone- I have not heard of ANY 5.3's or 4.8's or 6.0's having ANY engine failure, pinging, knocking, piston slap, or whatever you want to make up next. I've only read where a couple of Chevy owners had a vibration sound(not feel)coming from the rear of the drive train(axle area), myself included. That wouldn't be the first time I've heard that one though. You will hear that on any truck from time to time. If I've missed a topic about the Chevy engine failing in any way please direct me to where you heard of read it. I would like to be informed myself.

46triton-I have not said that my truck or any other truck would beat the lightning. Yet! I said that from what I have seen I'm pretty darn close. ET's tend to get exagerated when converted to type on the internet. Now, if you want to hear of a Silverado with a 100hp shot of juice and no blower that can beat a Lightning, then there's one over on LS1.com.

The Lightning is truly awesome. I sure wish GM would get off there *** and build something that could compete. But on the other hand, its a Ford. It's all preference. You like Ford and I like Chevy. Nine times out of Ten we like a certain vehicle because thats what our Dad had when we were growing up. So, to sit there and say that all Chevy owners are stupid and whatnot, is purely immature. Thats like saying all Germans are ****'s. Or all Jews are stingy. Its ridiculous. The three friends that I have that own Fords are great. On the other hand, I've seen some real ****heads that drive Fords. It's the same with Chevy's. I guess I'm rambling now. Anyway, I hope you get the point.

Why don't you explain the "Government Gravy Train" for us. As taxpayers we would love to hear all about it since we pay for it.

I usually get pissed off when some Chevy guy comes over here (dantheman) but this guy so far has done no wrong, he can even spell! I like the debate it brings. I test drove Chevies before I bought my first F-150. It is a nice truck, Dodges are nice trucks, they are all 1000% better than they were 20 yrs. ago. I feel strongly that Ford has shown the most interest in keeping up with the Japs. The quality of materials and the mechanical design is so much better than Chevies/Dodges IMHO. The build quality is much much better too. I like the more traditional interior in the Chevy just as much as I like the cutting edge Ford interior, the Chevy interiors just rattle like crazy. Chevy in the past has pulled a lot of stunts such as tail/brake lights that were a circuit board(as opposed to traditional sockets for the bulbs) that got wet and shorted out. How many 88-98 Chevies have you seen with no brake lights? I always let em know "your circuit board, I mean brake lights are out." Unfortunately, GM has been designing planned failures for years, that is why I hate them. They have made great strides in the new Silverado (no more circuit board lights) but I am not convinced that they are even close to catching Ford in quality. Dodge is all old school stuff now and all of the Dodge vans where I work part-time are abosolute junk. Some day it will be closer and the decision will be harder and harder.

In closing, if you want speed, buy a Vette or a Cobra if you want the highest quality truck buy a Ford. Also, Toyota and Honda have as many lemons or problems as some American automakers but they have mastered the art of "BRAINWASHING." They also manage to get the problem solved QUIETLY and QUICKLY.

Thumbs up

Hey seacrow, I couldn't have said it better myself. Ford builds to try to become the world standard in pickups. Chevy builds only to try to out-do Ford.

PS398--I don't really work for the Government(anymore). I am a Postal Carrier, which is not even Government run anymore. Its a non-profit corp., which means $0.0000 of your tax dollars end up in my pocket.

Stephen---thanks, I'll check it out.
