Jflex, if you're doing a tune up and don't want to go hipo, stick with the OE Motorcraft plugs and wires. If you're looking for a little bit more, then go with Denso Iridium plugs. These motors are VERY picky about their plugs. As for motor oil, Ford recommends 5W30 or 5W20. Whether you want synthetic or dino lube is up to you.

Stick with the 5W30, unless you're constantly in 100+degree heat. And any type of intake kit will get you better power, and a little mpg. I noticed a 1 mpg gain from my exhaust, and that was with me ******* it.

97 F150

152,000 miles. the only major repair has been to replace the fuel pump a year ago and replace the 2-3 accumulator piston retainer. Oil consumption is less than when it was new.

front end is getting close to needing rebushed.I used up all of the adjustment to bring the camber in to specs.

I have owned jap crap pickups and hands down this truck has them beat.

Furthermore I have 83 Ford tbird that is an unrestored daily driver (as in 100 miles round trip to work). It took it out of semi retirement because it gets consistently better than 20 mpg with a 302 V8. Rebuilt the engine about 70,000 miles ago. The AOD transmission has had 2 rear seals and one front seal replaced(preventive maint. at engine rebuild) along with fluid and filter changes and is working beautifully at 215,000 Arizona miles.

One thing I will say for Toyota is that they do a good job of keeping their disasters private. Toyota recalled everyone of the 1987 to 1995 3.0L V6's sold in the US. They all had head gasket leaks. Toyota as a minimum regound the heads and replaced head gaskets with an upgrade. A lot of engines were replaced due to excessive wear on cams and cranks or seizing due to oil contamination with coolant. If you did not have yours rebuilt /repaired/replaced it was because Toyota did not notify you. At least Ford did a great job of notifying the owners concerning the cruise control harness replacements.

IMHO Japanese vehicles are highly overrated whole Fords are highly underated.Need proof ?tell me how many empty service bays there are at your local Japanese dealer.

1997 with 189,500

I sold my 97 F-150 4x4 supercab flareside, with 189,500 miles. This was never any major problem with this truck and I kind of regret selling it. I got a new F-150 FX4 only because the dealer had a price-I-couldn't-refuse deal.

1989 F250 2WD work truck. 232,275 miles. She has the 350 V8 original engine and tranny. The auto tranny slips a bit and leaks, the mileage isn't very good, she's down a bit on power, but there is no smoke and she starts right up (with a toggle switch we installed in lieu of replacing the steering column starter actuator kluge which has basically turned to expensive to replace little rattly bits in there).

Just bought a new F150 to replace an even older chev truck in the fleet (but it is on its 3rd engine). This F250 truck which I know has been abused in its life by being overloaded with firewood and heavy trailers absolutely sold me on Ford trucks. I have had more than one person tell me that this particular version of Ford's 350 is known to be an exceptionally great engine; I am no mechanic, but how can you argue with 200K+ miles? Nothing else even comes close except maybe the old International trucks which you hardly see any more.
