4R70W 97 and up differences & interchangability
Are there any differences between the years of the 4r70w transmission? Is a 2003 4.6l 4r70w a direct replacement for a 97-04. I've seen the 01-04's are plug-n-play, but what makes them "different" then a 4r70w from 97-00. I understand the torque converters coincide with the engine displacement.
I would think all have the basic Shift solenoid #1 & #2, TCC, & EPC, Temperature sensor, VSS and OSS, and Transmission Range sensor.
I can't imagine there being that much difference...Just wanted to ask the pro's!!

The 97 4R70W uses the older pre-97 electronics connector but has the 4.6/5.4L bolt pattern.
In 98 and up to 2000, they switched the electrical connectors a bit but I'm pretty sure the internals should still be the same. After 98, they changed the VSS style, but if you've got a 4x4 that's in the transfer case anyway. After 2000, the electrical setup is a little different internally along with the connector...I'm pretty sure I seen a few posts here where someone did swap an 01-04 tranny into a 98 or 99 but I can't find the post at the moment.
So for a '97 it's pretty much a one-year only oddball. I found that out this past summer on my own truck.

Yes...would love the repin info. If it'll work by just repinning the connector, that'd be great...and easy.

jeeper78,
In 98 the internal electronics changed on these transmissions. What you have is a common problem that most get when they swap in a newer transmission into a 97 or older vehicle.
You can either fix it by swapping the internal wiring harness and all the solenoids from the old transmission into the new one or by repinning the harness on the truck to work with the newer transmission.
I have been flat covered up this week and only had a spare few minutes to stop in. I have the wiring diagrams you guys need for this at the shop. I hate to make promises that I don't know if I can keep, but I will try to remember to get the info online somehow and post links or something.

My 2000 4.2L has 180K miles on it. The TC is bad...the lockup is extremely rough. As far as the gears go, everything seems normal.
I've been offered a low mileage factory rebuilt 97 tranny out of a 4.2L.
I'd like to get this tranny, but after reading above, I don't think it will work. what/how can I make this work and is it worth it? is the bolt patter talked about in this quote the TC or the Starter?

Repinning the harness to accept 97 4r70w trans on a 99 f150
Hey Darrin, you would happen to still have the pin out info to rejoin the harness to accept a 97 f150 4.2 v6 4R70W tras to a 99 ford f150 with a 4.2 v6 4R70W?
