4R70W 97 and up differences & interchangability
I repinned the transmission it's running better but the trans won't shift I took it out of a 97 econoline 150 and put it in a 2000 ford f150 I put it on a diagnostic computer and shift solenoid 2 is not responding would it have to do with the other 2 vehicle power wires not put in? Or is there a bypass? Or do I have to put it in a certain spot?
4r70w
I replaced a 4r70w from a 5.0 2000 explorer into my 97 Mountaineer. Shifting hard between 1&2, overdrive light flashing. Per reading this post I see that the 97 year had differences. Do I need to repin so it would work properly ?
So will a 1997 go into a 2004 with a repin as well?
I've seen where 2004 would go into 1997 with a repin so does that mean the opposite would work too?
I do not know. I wouldn't put an old 1997 transmission in a 2004 Heritage, it's considerably weaker. Best swap is 2001-2003.
The 97 4R70W uses the older pre-97 electronics connector but has the 4.6/5.4L bolt pattern.
In 98 and up to 2000, they switched the electrical connectors a bit but I'm pretty sure the internals should still be the same. After 98, they changed the VSS style, but if you've got a 4x4 that's in the transfer case anyway. After 2000, the electrical setup is a little different internally along with the connector...I'm pretty sure I seen a few posts here where someone did swap an 01-04 tranny into a 98 or 99 but I can't find the post at the moment.
So for a '97 it's pretty much a one-year only oddball. I found that out this past summer on my own truck.

You are very correct I put a 98 transmission in a 97 and had a shift sensor trigger on my dash I didn't get to it in time or whatever and it ended up screwing up the transmission shifted very violently from second to third unless you let off the accelerator now I'm in the yard right now putting the original transmission back in
Can I use a 4r70w out of a 2005 f150 4x4 in a 1997 f150 4x4 with a 4r70w?
I know l have to re pin the harness.
I can get a low mileage one cheap.
I have worked on cars for many years but limited knowledge on automatic transmission internals.

No. Output shafts are different.
No. Incompatible without taking the transmission apart to swap the output shaft and tailhousing. Transfer case has nothing to do with it. Also, if the 97 is a V6 and the 05 is a V8 the bellhousing patterns are different. You can't use anything newer than 03.
