Sorry this is so late, but things are hectic around here. The state law states that you may carry a loaded firearm (pistol) in your vehicle, if you adhere to the following...
It must be "snapped/velcro in a holster,or in a box (your glove box will do),or in a zippered pouch.I have seen people go so far as to put them into a shoe box "closed with a lid" and that is fine. But just dont stick it under your seat, unless it is in a holster as specified above.
Also it is not specified for non-permit carring persons, but as a courtesy please let an Officer know immediately that you have a firearm in the vehicle (politely), this will help if for some reason he, or she sees one and you forgot to tell them.
If your firearm is secured like I just specified, you will be on your way happy, unless you get a coupon.....

Thumbs up

Hey Dave. Just thought I'd post a little follow-up to my little saga with the kids in the neighborhood here. Remember the little sh*t that I tackled? Well, his mommy did file an "assault" report against me. I got off the phone with the FWPD dectective about 10 minutes ago. The guy said that normally, because they handle rape and assault on kids, they just don't follow up on stuff like this, and usually the parents go away. But apparently this loonatik keeps calling. He told me that he was going to call the parent and let her know that not only is she lucky that I am not pressing charges against her and her son, but that he is lucky someone didn't come out with a gun, and that the child would be well advised to find something else to occupy his time. Case closed. Now does this sound familiar??? The poor dectective sounded almost apologetic...and exasperated at the same time that he has to deal with these crackpot parents.

I feel for you Dave, but I thought you'd get a laugh.

BTW...I won't be making San Antonio. My company, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to send me to Boston that week. Grrrrrr. Next time.

This great thread (thanks, Davensa) was calling out to me, asking to be brought back.

Here in Ottawa, Canada, we've got a sh*tstorm going on with letters to the editor of the local newspaper and all about bicyclists obeying the traffic laws. The flap began with some guy bitching in print about getting a $135 ticket for going through a red light after he stopped his bike and proceded safely, he said. Most letter writers back the police officer who cited the guy.

Do cyclists have to obey traffic laws where you live?

Also, we have two new laws recently saying cyclists under 18 have to wear a helmet, and all cyclists have to have a bell on their bikes. The first one makes sense to me though I would think 14 years of age would make more sense but, so far, I have refused to buy a bell for my expensive light-weight mountain bike. I figure I can yell way louder than any bell. What do you think?

My third F-series: '73 F-100 Custom 240-cube 3-speed, '98 F-150 XL-SC 4.2 5-speed, and '00 F-150 XLT-SC 4.2 5-speed. GREAT trucks!

Yes bicycles have to obey all traffic laws, the thing is they want their cake and eat it too. The want to ride in the traffic lanes and do the things cars/trucks do but also no obey traffic laws. I have never written one up but it has been done. They have to obey the laws.
As for the helmet law, I personally think its good for minors to wear them, my son has to wear one because its dads law. Its not a state law yet, but its coming. As far as the bell, you are right, I can yell louder than ding ding..haha...
If my windows are up am I gonna hear it, I doubt it. Probably passed by a law maker that has stock in a bell company...ching ghang......Dave

Good to hear from you, Dave. That bell law is just dumb, in my opinion. But otherwise, I think we bikers should obey laws like everybody else. If not, we should pay up and shut up.

By the way, I just road-tested a new Mercedes M-Class 4X4 SUV that the Ontario Provincial Police (Kanata detachment) got in last week. They've got it for 50,000 km (30,000 miles) of use from Mercedes-Benz Canada, which covers all repairs. Senior Constable Eric Booth let me take it off-road for an article for the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. Nice unit! Heated leather seats, dual-range transfer case.

Mercedes-Benz Canada loaned the RCMP detachment in North Vancouver, British Columbia, a similar ML320 SUV.

Local businesses contribute insurance, regular maintenance and a cell-phone and a Toronto company contributed the strobe lights. They all get to stick their logos on the rear-side windows of the vehicle, but otherwise, it's painted up in OPP colours and lettering. You should try for a similar deal in Texas.

Volvo and Mercedes both wanted us to, but the chief said no, seems he wanted one but they wanted it for patrol only to be tested. So he said no...go figure....Dave

Dave: The OPP got their Mercedes mainly for community service. Now, they don't have to take a regular patrol car out of active duty. However, it's on the road all day and if it's the closest unit to a vehicle collision when the call comes in, it will respond. It will also come to the aid of motorists whose cars break down, etc.

"Free" is a pretty good deal, the OPP feels. They went out of their way to make the business case to the unit chief. Also, Mercedes-Benz is keen to get more exposure for their product while contributing something to the community.

The RCMP in North Van. also has an Audi Quattro and a New Beatle decked out in RCMP colours, by the way.

My "news" story ran on Friday but it wasn't posted on the Ottawa Citizen Web site. If you're interested, I'll fax you the story. I'll see if the newspaper posts the road-test, which I've already filed. It should run in the weekly "Wheels" section later this week or next. If it does, I'll post the URL.

Cool

Most of the time you will not get a ticket if you pass the attitude test. Basically don't be a J-off and you won't have problems. Again there are a whole bunch of cops that just hate life but for what they get paid and what the have to deal with you can't blame them......thanks
