Hi, Chris. Nice site. Helluva résumé you have there. You'd make megabucks up here in Silicon Valley North. But you gotta luv Florida. I do, every time I visit my folks in Sarasota from the frozen North up here.
About the way you say you look, Chris, I think everyone should take a vow, now that the Year 2000 is here, to give up judging people by their appearance. Some folks tried it. It didn't mean anything. And that goes for (stereotype-alert) "beautiful" women, too.
Surely to God we can start the new century without the BS prejudices that have plagued us most of the last one. You're ample proof that how people look or the colour of their skin is now pretty much irrelevant.
Most of the child molesters and kiddy **** fans that are arrested around here look like Ward Cleaver! My view, anyway.

Hi, folks. This thread has been very interesting and informative.
In the spirit of providing information, I invite you to have some fun and test your knowledge of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. Click below to take the "Wheels" Driver's Test. I'm the author and a reporter for the "Wheels" section of the Ottawa Citizen daily newspaper.
We had a great reaction to the test from the readers - lots of letters and e-mails, all positive and some taking issue, as expected.
There's 43 questions (True or False) and the answers appear at the end. In tomorrow's paper, I'll have a clarification on the answer to Question 29 (motorcyclists) that I'll post here, also.
Enjoy! And two guesses where I got the made-up name of the motorist in the lead paragraph.

More on my Driver's Quiz a couple of posts earlier. I hope anyone on this Board who takes the test has a good time, maybe even learns something. I'd be interested to know how you score.
By the way, the newspaper (Ottawa Citizen) didn't post its letters section on their Web site today so I can't give you a hyperlink. However, here is what I filed and what appeared in print this morning:
__________
Letters (Wheels section, Friday March 10, 2000)
It's Sunday, and I'm just catching up on reading the last few days worth of
newspapers. The quiz on the rules of the road ("Give it a brake!" March 3)
was great fun, and I hope a lot of the drivers I meet out on the roads took
the time to learn a few things.
Now comes the "but." I have an issue with No. 29, the question that lumps bicycles and
motorcycles in the same class for lane occupancy. I can see the point in
suggesting that pedal bikes keep to the right on a two-lane road, but I
don't believe that my 1/2-ton, two-litre motorcycle is quite the same thing.
May I direct your attention to the Ontario Motorcycle Driver's Handbook, page
32: "Learning Your Place on the Road."It clearly states: "A motorcycle
rider, when travelling in the right lane should be slightly to the left of
the center of the lane. This is your 'blocking position' for the right lane
of a two-lane road."
Sharing the highways safely with cars and trucks is challenging enough without dealing with drivers who may have seen your information and believe I should let them split the lane with me. Riding season is fast approaching. If Wheels were to mention the correct procedures, it would benefit everyone.

*
As a driver improvement course instructor, I welcomed your article. From my
experience, too many people drive on what they assume to be the rules of the
road. The article, though, was not perfect. The explanation for Question 29
as it applies to motorcycles is wrong.
I suggest the author meant to refer to operators of "mopeds," not
motorcyclists. Paragraph 2 Section II, Chapter 2 (page 24) of The Official
Driver's Handbook for Ontario makes reference to this, with further
clarification as it applies to motorcycles in the third paragraph.
Basically, motorcyclists, for safety reasons, are entitled use use the full
width of a lane and are not obliged to share that width with any other
vehicle.
J. P. (Pat) Cluff, Almonte, ON
Writer Craig M. Lee responds:
Question 29 asked (True or False?): "Bicyclists and motorcyclists are
permitted to take up a whole lane on multi-lane (say, four-lane) roads, even
if they slow down the flow of traffic." The answer was: "True. Drivers of
smaller vehicles such as bicycles and motorcycles are permitted to use the
full width of their lane, except on two-lane roads where they must keep to
the right."
The answer was correct according to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (the
basis for the article), but incomplete. There's more to the story, as these
sharp-eyed readers point out.
Section 148 (2) of the HTA states: "Every person in charge of a vehicle or on
horseback on a highway who is overtaken by a vehicle or equestrian travelling at a greater speed shall turn out to the right and allow the overtaking vehicle or equestrian to pass." This section covers all vehicles including cars and motorcycles.
But the driver's handbook (as well as the Canada Safety Council) are describing the safest way for modern motorcycles to travel.
According to OPP spokesman Senior Const. Eric Booth: "Horses, farm vehicles
and motor-assisted bicycles must keep to the right to avoid interfering with
the flow of traffic. However, most motorcycles can more than keep up with
traffic and don't interfere with the flow. They can, and should, take their
rightful place in the centre or left-of-centre of their lane."

DAVENSA, Just an FYI. With the help of Bill Murray (thanks again Bill) and one of his police officer friends I got a copy of code 40-6-251 "laying drag" -- Violations relating to intentional operation of motor vehicles to create danger to persons or property. No driver of any motor vehicle shall operate the vehicle upon the public streets, driveways, etc. in such a manner as to create a danger to persons or property by intentionally and unnecessarily causing the vehicle to move in a zigzag or circular course or to gyrate or spin around, except to avoid a collision or injury or damage. I think I definately have this beat. I did not "create danger" and I didn't move my vehicle in "zig zag or circular course".

4DR THUNDER,
Here is the reply I asked for along time ago regarding the confiscation of vehicles in ny..
This message is in response to your E-mail communication to Police Commissioner Safir regarding when a motor vehicle will be seized by our Department for "traffic related" reasons.
You are likely referring to this Department's "Aggressive Driving Program," which is designed to promote the safe and expeditious flow of traffic by reducing aggressive driving. Under this program, a violator's vehicle is subject to seizure and civil forfeiture:
(1) If the operator is arrested for Aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the first degree. (i.e., driving with at least 10 license suspensions on at least 10 dates), or
(2) Extreme cases of Reckless Driving:
(a) caught doing double the posted speed limit, or
(b) commits three or more traffic violations in the same incident, creating a substantial risk of serious physical injury to other motorists, including:
1. Fail to yield right of way
2. Following too closely
3. Improper turn
4. Fail to obey traffic signal
5. Disobey sign
6. Improper passing
7. Fail to give pedestrian the right of way
8. Backing unsafely
9. Fail to keep right
One of these violations must include speeding 20 MPH in excess of the posted speed limit.
I hope that this answers your inquiry regarding the Aggressive Driving Program. Thank you for your E-mail.

Dave...just a little follow up to my statements regarding local elections above. As predicted...after 2 of some of the most corrupt terms in history, the Tarrant County Sheriff, David Williams, was thrown out of office, receiving a mere 10% of the vote. If something isn't working in your city's government, you CAN make a difference in a municipal election! Get out there and vote and be counted!!

Just be sure to get the shop owners name, so when you get that ticket (110.00 in SA) you can supeona him to court. The big hint here is the State of Texas gives you two plates.......It is required by law to have two license plate displayed. 1 on the front and 1 on the back. Texas transportation code...502.404

Dave,
What is your opinion on the best cop car made? Ive been told by cops that the Crown Vic is just too slow, and handles terrible. They all say the Caprice with the LT1 is the fastest, and handle like a dream. SOme departments are buying Tahoes as they are faster than the Crown Vics, and are rebuilding the caprices.

Dave, sorry I missed that post. I see that stuff on the roads nearly every day. If they took all of those cars away we could convert the expressways to airports.
