Change - Explain Your Thoughts
We've got a moderator who shut down a thread because it simply "could of" been a problem or he didn't like the thread. The guy posted early in the thread that he was going to let is stay around for a little bit just to see the responses but had every intention of locking it or removing it before it even played out. Not very fair. It never became a problem and everyone was keeping it clean because they wanted it to stay around to get their voice heard. Locking it down was just a show of power.
I'm not one to fight and argue for a new section for inappropriate crap, etc. That would completely derail this site and send it to the crapper. But I do feel the way that thread was handled was quite poor (with the initial comment and the followed closure of it).
Also, the butting into many threads and editting peoples' posts to jut "guys, keep it PG13 blah blah blah" has been a little too strict. Yes, i agree about the language thing and that it should be watched, but seriously...some of the stuff that has initiated a "PG13 warning" is pretty ridiculously innocent.
I have nothing personal against Stealth, and I'm sure he'll get more used to moderating as time goes and do a great job. I just think people are alarmed that this kind of thing will continue to happen and be like a domino effect.
PS thanks for this thread RP. Excellent idea.
I haven't read through this entire thread, but I will give my likes/dislikes.
a) Finally the Quick Reply works as it should. Instead of having to click on an icon in the post to enable the box to become active.
b) With the classifieds borked, can we set up a separate system? Heck even a sub-domain would work. That was very useful and is dead in the water from the last time I checked 2 weeks ago.
c) Sure there are ppl here that stir the pot. But they provide activity. Without activity you will see this place crash faster than our 401k's have done in the past year. Warnings need to be enforced if severe violations occur.
d) Want to spur up some traffic? Have some contests. Heck even a small prize of $50 bucks in gas would be great fun for us all.
e) A Sticky section would be nice for some things. Rather than having to remember where you seen that tutorial at, simply navigate to that forum. Heck even copy it over to there and lock it.

Dang good post, turd.
To your points...
a) I didn't know that one wasn't working... glad it is now for you though.

b) Concured. Like I mentioned in my last post, we may have a Buy/Sell/Trade forum sooner than later. The old classified system may just get scrapped.
c) Agreed on all points. It does provide activity and some interest but, unfortunately, many of the times, it's at the expense of the moderator's time and the bandwidth of the site. The yellow and redcard system will be utilized more often in the coming months...
d) Not sure about the prizes but, there will actually be a few contests soon. I'm working on that (re: the Truck of the Month thread in Suggestions). We'll see where it can go from there... maybe we can pull in some of our supporting vendors and goodies... I'd sure like to see that happen but, it takes a lot of time to spin into reality. I will give it a go for the site though.
e) Another great suggestion. I'd really like to expand on that though... the Technical Articles section should be something that we USE! There is an absolute metric ***-ton of great information on this site -- some posts are WAY above and beyond the rest with pictures, step by step instructions, and very detailed information... those need to be formally enshrined on the site so that they're accessible within a library for the members - and guests - to utilize. Again, it takes time... I've tried to respond to some of the 'hey rockpick, sticky this' types of PMs quickly so that some are individualized... again though, it'll take time.
I just wanted to chime in here. I have not been on the site very long and have not seen the long term transformations that are apparently causing concern to some. When I joined this site it was due to the incredible amount of information that has been freely given and shared buy all of the members. Every one of this site's members have agreed to the terms and conditions of this site and agreed to abide by the rules.
While I am not against and actually look forward to spirited debate and some good old fashioned "talking smack" I do not feel the management should walk the line with sponsors (Companies that actually pay for the site not members) and chance losing the site due to lack of funding. Most reputable companies would not want to be represented by 4 letter words and ****. IB is in business to make money and sponsors generate cash flow. It would also appear that IB has figured out how to attract and keep sponsors by following their values.
Moderators kind of like school teachers. Underpaid and have a very small percentage of CHILDREN that push the line and continually disrupt class and then sit back and come up with every imaginable excuse why it is ok.
Mods also have to be able to make a decision on a thread without being picked apart for every decision. Sometimes you need to make a decision based on direction and the players involved. I do it every day at work and every coach of any sports team in the nation needs to head off disaster before it happens if possible.
I appreciate the open forum to discuss possible and perceived issues. It also allows for the "Line Pushers" to show their colors.
If I want **** swearing and everything that comes with it I will go somewhere else. I enjoy sitting with my 2 1/2 year old daughter letting her show me which trucks she likes and trying to read.

I've revised this response 4 times now... lots of things that I'd love to say but, I'm going to refrain.... what I will say is this:
Just because I've responded to nearly EVERY post in this thread on my own time, because I care about how the site works, how people percieve it, and have offered rebuttal, agreements, and disagreements makes it such that I've disagreed or 'shot down' everyone's opinion?
Other than turning the shop into a XXX forum, where have I blatently shot down an 'opinion'?
Find me another moderator that would literally sit by for HOURS, ask questions like have been asked, admitted fault in many cases, respond to thoughts that the members have, and genuinely try to help to execute through with some of the opinions/suggestions that the members have and I'll show you a picture of a guy that looks amazingly like a guy that has been posted here with a plaid shirt.
If you don't appreciate it because of the recent past that you and I have, that's your perogative and I'll not try to change it. I'll never please everyone and you're way down the list of people that I'll go out of my way to please.
Stop stirring the pot.

see now it is diffucult to skirt adult subject matter you even did it
I'm not trying to toot my horn (I'm not that flexible)
and please don't take this as I'm just trying to make waves because that is not the case, but how is this reference to self fellatio less offensive than my muddin' comment
and no I dont expect for you to count F-bombs but the general rule of thumb is that pg-13 has a more adult theme, strong language, and adult subject matter that was the gist of me posting the mpaa rating

I know it is a tad rough not having a lot of active moderators for trying to get things moving. So you should ponder temporarily promoting individuals to aid in the creation on things ie. Technical Articles. I know how some will whine that it shows favoritism or whatnot, but it should deeply be considered. Several folks can do this quicker than just a couple of moderators. Heck I will help out if need be.
The active mods have more than enough on their plates now. So just consider this.
This gripe session seems to be somewhat productive.

It was intentional po1... that type of thing, while difficult to show that this or that would be acceptable, is what I wanted to put out there.
Honestly, I was hoping that it'd be mentioned.
See, that's where it comes into being subjective. Frankly, as men, I think we could spin ANYTHING into something sexual. That's always a bad thing and can be funny at times, it's finding a certain understanding of the 'grey' area between black and white. While difficult to explain - in fact, nearly impossible - the way that things have worked in the past.
I mean, if one guy skirts the word censor by using 'dang' rather than 'damn', do I have to scold them? Where as, the next guy skirts the F by going one way... does that guy get the same scalding?
By definition of some, damn and F would be on the same page of profanity... it's subjective, interpretative, and difficult as heck (see, I skirted hell there) to enforce.

Fair assessment and question, again...
I guess what I am saying is just that... but, I only say that because what you've basically said is that it's up to the individual moderator and may be adversely or positively influenced by the moderator(s) mood, atmosphere, alignment of Jupiter's moons, and various other things.
But, to that point, there is a pretty clear black and white area on MOST things... like I've said before in numerous posts, 'stupidity isn't an excuse' in nearly all instances...

No not the case. Typically you can tell if someone is going to be a good mod or not quickly. Some have to have their e-***** stroked in order to feel good for that day. Others just stay consistent.

Not sure I really cleared it up... in fact, it may be muddier. What I am trying to do is be honest and very forthcoming with how it works.
It may not be the best case but, I've never seen a book called 'Moderating f150online.com for Idiots' at Barnes & Noble. I'd read it in a heartbeat if it was out there...
(yes, I just called myself an idiot -- hahaha).
A very similar comparison would be a police officier...
One cop may see an infraction and write a citation whereas the next cop may see nothing. Other things, however, will yield the same reaction from both cops -- for example, a stabbing. In that case, both cops will cuff the guy and take him off to federal pound...uhh, --nevermind -- prision (catch the Office Space reference?
). What they'd do in the academy though, is attempt to get both of them on the same page so that, hopefully, they'd make the same decision in all instances... It's just impossible to fine tune it though. I wish we could though...

I dont really see any progress made here at all. Seems to me that while you agree with some points nothing is said about change. I guess this is just an area for the members to vent, hoping they will get out their frustrations and feel good enough to walk the line for another couple months.
It's funny how I get called on the F bomb but you and others use other 4 letter words constantly. I guess its personal preference and not so much the rules anymore.
I hear constantly about keeping it pg-13
Maybe the definition of PG-13 should be checked, this forum is moderated down to a G level.
