Within the next week or two I want to get a borla XR-1 si/so 3" inlet/3" outlet for my truck. I am torn between the round body or the oval body (part numbers 40943 and 40085)

I am concerned with the possibility of drone especially at highway speeds of 60-70mph ( I drive like a gramp and its too expensive to drive fast lol) and I read your reviews on the exhausts you have had on your truck. Which XR-1 were you using and based off of your experiences with that muffler which would you recommend?

And for the record I am planning on mounting this muffler as far back as I can and removing the resonator. The truck is a '12 S'Crew 5.0 if that makes a difference.
I have the XR1 #40943 (12" oVAL). It did have more drone in the 60-70 mph range than my Magnapack (which really doesn't drone at all). My setups have always been mounted as far back as possible. Above 75 mph the muffler is very quiet. The 7-75 mph range has the best "tone" to it. The muffler has a sort of howl/growl to it in the range. Idle is not extremely loud, but is noticable. The muffler sound is very bassy. Whereas the magnapack has that punchyness to it and the Dynomax Bullet has that "chopchopchop" sound, the XR1 is more of a loud bassy howlgrowl (I made up that erm since I can't really describe it). It's strange, because the XR1 does not sound as loud as a Magnapack, however, it produces a very low deep sound that is definitely present. I drove through a parking lot over by my office a few months back and set off a few car alarms and didn't even know it until I heard the cars...I didn't evedn think the truck was that loud outside.

Comparitively speaking, after having both the XR1 and now the Magnapack back on again, I would say the XR1 has a fuller and deeper tone to it. The Magnapack has a smooth sound to it once it warms up, but still seems inconcisistent at times. Some days I say "OMG...the Maggie rocks!!", the other days i just feel "blah" about it. The XR1 was pretty much the same everyday I had it with it seemingly getting deeper the longer I had it. Essentially, the tone you hear from the Magnapack, is a louder but less refined and less "full toned" version of the sound you get from the XR1....which pretty much sounds that way all the time.

if I had to choose between the Oval #40943 (again) and the Round #40085, I would probably choose the #40085 Round. I read a chevy forum a while back and most there seemed to think the Round produced a better sound than the Oval. This also seemed to ring true on other forums I read with very few people favoring the oval over the round. It's tough to say which one would have less drone, but I would guess the Round. I heard the #40085 is more aggressive as well, but the Borla Tech told me he thinks the oval might be more aggressive (but not to take that as fact).

You really can't go wrong with either. Drone is so subjective it would be tough to describe what I like and don't like (some drone I do like!) or what might affect you the most. I say go for the Round XR1 and see what happens! I may be doing the same thing myself

Hope this helps a little!

yea guy that helps a lot. Your descriptions of mufflers/exhausts are always great. I see what you are saying and I think that I will certainly go with the round. I am surprised that the Borla Rep would say the oval is more aggressive cause I feel that the opposite would be true.

My brother has the roush off road muffler on his 5.4 and I love the deep, aggressive tone and want something similar but do not want to perfectly emulate that sound. I think because the tone is deeper and more of a bass sound it wouldn't appear to be as loud as a muffler that produces a higher pitched tone. I do want something aggressive so round body it is. I will post up vids when I get it. next couple weeks I am going to go through with this.

My Borla 40842-S will be here tomorrow, but I will get it installed the next day or two. It will be good to compare ours because I started to use the XR-1 but could not find any videos of a 5.0, So I do not know what it will sound like. I believe you said you are going with a SI/SO setup and so am I with resonator delete. I hope mine sounds close to capt. awesome. I did noticed that the atak setup uses a oval type muffler, maybe thats why the rep said that I don't know. I will try to get a video up next week when I am off from work.

Sounds good man. I thought about the S type but thats only available as a 2.5 no 3in option otherwise I would certainly go that route just for *hits and giggles

I did see Capt Awesome and that truck is beastly and actually was one my brother kept telling me to listen to for ideas. Granted on a computer sounds nothing like in person.

I'm going to pull the trigger on the round body a.) go big or go home and b.) I really cannot imagine myself being disappointed going either route from what I have read and heard from people.

post your video when you get it installed!!! Good luck!

I originally wanted to go with the XR-1 too because of it being 3"also. I think the S-type on Capt. Awesomes truck echoes the Atak a little, not quite as loud. I believe the XR-1was about $30 dollars less too. I will definitely post a video, it might take me about a week because of work, but I definitely will. You do the same and thank you and good luck to you. I think your truck is going to sound awesome, after all these are Borla.

Haha yep. it seems like a pretty easy swap so if I absolutely hate it or cannot stand it I will be able to switch it up. I doubt that will happen regardless.

As you said James, they are much deeper. Arklight hit the nail on the head: the tone is full, just gets louder. My magnaflow 12198 changed sound with rpms from deep to high. More of a range of octaves if that makes sense vs the deep consistent power tone of the roush. Its unique for sure and I love the borla tone.

Yeah the Borla is consistently deep only the volume changes, whereas the Magnapack gets louder but also changes in pitch.

Borla may not be the loudest, but it certainly is one of the classiest.

My wife described the XR1 as "Loud.....all the time.". haha

Guess what just came in on the Fed Ex truck, my Borla 40842S muffler. I called Borla to ask about the install and they recommended leaving the resonator in. They said it will be loud and if I wanted more sound I could then delete it. What do you all think. Should I try it first with resonator in or go ahead and delete from the beginning. I have an appointment for fist thing in the morning to install it. I took some pics of it but don't know how to upload on this site. Basically looks like a large expensive resonator. The Borla name looks cool on it.

I mean you can try it with the resonator in. I plan on just getting 409 stainless piping and clamping that in place of the resonator then mounting the muffler as far back as possible. Personally if you aren't worried about how loud it will be just go ahead and delete the resonator. Lets hear that Borla!!!!

AirsoftF150, You talked me into it. I am going to go ahead and remove the resonator, but clamp in a piece of pipe so if it is overbearing then I can reverse it easy. Good idea! Thanks. I have to go to work in the evening so if I have time I will try to make a quick Idle and rev video until next week. Then next week I will do some takeoffs, drive-bys, and in cab. Is your XR-1 already ordered?

No not yet. I'm finishing up classes this week so I am strapped for time and cash. I am going to order #40085 and get everything I need and just do it over the weekend. I can update here when that happens. Post up your thoughts when you get that muffler in though!!!

OK here it is:

After arriving at the muffler shop the installer who seems to be pretty good with exhaust told me I should wait and drive it a few days with the resonator in just to be sure. So that is what I did, the resonator is still on. To me this sounds so good, gets really loud when you get on it driving. I would say a lot of older guys would even enjoy this, because it is on the cutting edge between medium soft to loud.Driving it really has that deep base tone, almost like driving a sports car if that makes any sense. And this is just a single exhaust.Borla 40842S factory piping.

Rule #1 of Exhaust Club - Don't listen to muffler shop employees. LOL

You are enjoying it and that is all that matters in the end!

Sounds good. A little too quiet for my taste though.

Sounds good brother! Hope you enjoy it.

The shop guy was just trying to play it safe... unless of course he happens to be your neighbor and he was motivated for other reasons.....

regardless enjoy it, sounds good.
