After reading all of this i def want to do this mod soon. My only worry is that my MPG already kinda sucks so will this mod affect it any? Well it go down or maybe even up? Thanks!

since you've faiiled to re-gear it's amazing your transmission has survived this long

Great thread! Did this to my 4.2 this morning. Can tell a definite difference in the performance. It's no 'power house' but it sure is running better.

Thank you for the great write up.

I think he means that, since you've put the large tires on, it's putting a lot of stress on your tranny that it wasn't designed to deal with. You should change out the rear end ration to a higher numeric one to take some of the stress off your trans.

I personally dont think that i have "fail" to regear. I havent had bigger tires for long and also my past truck (same style 99) had 35s and from 90K miles to 330K miles and did not have any problems. stock tranny to. Now if i had 37s or bigger, yea i would be re gearing.

I just did it on my 2000 4.6 and gotta say, it was the easiest mod I've ever done on a vehicle since I used the flexible sewer pipe instead of regular PVC. it does feel like it has a little more pull when im passing other cars, but it only really kicks in at higher RPM's, but I guess thats what its supposed to do.

Ive done this mod but I have a question. Is it possible this mod could hurt your gas mileage. Your engine is taking in more air so the PCM would compensate by using more gas wouldn't it?

I would think that, for "normal" driving, there would be no real adverse effect on gas mileage. The only time the extra power would be used would be for high-speed passing, or maybe hard acceleration (stoplight drags?) when the throttle is fully or nearly wide open. The rest of the time, the throttle plate position would be the determining factor in air/fuel flow.

I just did this mod to my 03 5.4L, and I used sewer pipe. The write-up says "at least 2 inches" into the fender, which is fine, but does the new pipe have to rest inside both the cutouts in the fender, or just go through the first hole? Should it rest flush with the second hole in the inner fender, or is a little gap okay? Should any attempt be made to seal the gaps between the fender and pipe with weatherstripping or something?

Sorry for all the questions... It's sad, but I still want a K&N 77 Series.

Gotta add me to that list. I did it several months ago and dont regret it. At high RPMs it accelerates so well to get around the people "driving Ms. Daisy"
