Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.

Fair warning!!!! On the blue clip at fuel filter
You can not buy a replacement blue clip from an auto parts or from Ford if it gets damaged. My 2005 Exped. 5.4 4X4 fuel filter has the blue clip. I decided to change the filter and should have read a little on this forum first. To make a long story short- There is a process to get the blue clip disconnected unlike any other. I destroyed the clip using old procedures used on other filters. Went to the auto parts and Ford and they do not sell it separate. I had to buy the fuel line from the tank to the filter with the blue clip in it. $70.00 There is a thread that addresses how to change a filter with the blue clip. Good luck
BEWARE!!!!
I did this today using the 5/16" scissor tool. I have the plastic clips but couldn't get it to work, so I tried the scissor tool. What I did is pushed the tool into the fuel line while pushing the fuel line onto the tool, it then clicked and came off.
Nice write up on the fuel filter change. Did mine today and my truck had the blue clip. Used the tool to remove rear line, the center part of the blue clip pops up and then you just pull off. I have the FX4 with skid plates so I removed the one over the transfer case to gain better access to the front line. That one was a little more difficult because you don't have much room for two hands. Got that one off and then used a large flat blade screwdriver to pry the filter out, that worked really well. All told it took about 35 minutes to do. I let the truck sit for about 2 and one half hours, and there was very little gas that came out. The dealer wanted 45- 50 bucks to do it.
ok so anyone have the orange clips i broke mine but put a piece of it back in there to hold it and turned it up so it wouldnt fall out. But i want a couple replacements for later on

I looked through the thread to see if this was posted but may have missed. Here is something else to consider. I have an 05 screw 5.4 mfg. 10-04 with fuel filter p/n PG986B this filter has 5/16" lines. Not sure of date but I think trucks made sometime after Jan 05 have 3/8 lines, p/n FG986B.
Thanks guys! I got under mine the other day but with the snow and all I had to try it in the garage and was following the manual. I depressurized the line and then couldnt figure out the clips and was afraid of breaking them so I gave up and started to read. Nobody at the auto parts store said anything about the tool and I didnt think the manual did this replacement justice. Thanks for the tips! Mine will be done this week. Again, nice job for those that illustrated the change.
changed mine today, '04 stx 4x4. directions were great. I bought a fram filter and it came with 2 white clips. they looked bigger so i didn't think it would work. to my surprise it worked great except when you want to take it back out. it comes out extremely difficult but it came out.
