Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.

Read the full discussion below to find out how to replace your fuel filter.

Thanks for reading, and please don't pay someone to do this if you don't have to.
i'm very new to this website, but i sincerely thank you for this article! The pics were clear and instructions concise. Being a woman and trying to work on some of these newer pick ups has been a challenge. I don't have the shop my dad did, and so I just don't have as many tools or guys hanging around to pick brains from! Next are the spark plugs on my 2005 f150. Heard they were a big pain and expensive. Thanks for all the great articles so far!

Haha... everybody talking about blue or orange clips. I just changed my filter today after 40,000 (just part of my personal maintenance) and I have a red clip. You know, just to try and confuse everybody even more.

First off I didn't read all of the posts...so don't slay me for it...

I want to thank all for the pics and posts I did read because they were very helpful and informative...

I want to say the job Ford did with these filters is just $H!TY!!!
some 5/16" filters and some 3/8 filters...and at least 3 different color clips!!!

I had 3 or 4 peopel at Autozone & Advance auto parts tell me the only filter they had listed for my truck was a 5/16 filter and when I brought it in to show them it was a 3/8 I was told to look through the boxes to see if something would work...
even when they looked up the motorcraft number (FG-1083) they got no cross referance number...

Then the ****** at Jiffy lube had the right filter but after calling the store manager they would not sell me just the filter...and wanted $69 to change the filter for me...I almost passed out!!!

next I look up Napa and they list 2 filters...5/16 and 3/8
I look up my local store and they have it in stock and are open until 6 pm...
I arrive at 5:45 pm and the sign on the door says they close at 5 pm!!!

lucky or a miracle there was a Carquest across the street from Napa
that was actually open until 6 pm...The guy was not happy to be there but at least he found the right part...
so...Carquest # 86243 works for 3/8" fuel lines...$17.50 w/tax

now the clip...I had a blue clip and it broke about 20 seconds after I started
I just bought a box of 5/16 & 3/8 clips for Fords for $4 and used the black 3/8 clip...The black ones are 3/8 that I used and white ones are 5/16...
I agree the clips look nothing like the Ford one but works just as good if not better...here is a link with pic

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/cat...brandName=Help

To install..

make sure filter fuel flow arrow points to front of vehicle...just slip the back side of the filter in the line until it stops and push the clip all the way in until it clicks/locks the filter...push the front of the filter inside the line until it clicks...place the metal clasp back over the line/filter and slide filter assembly back into the filter holder..prime filter by turning the key on 2 or 3 times without starting...then start the truck and make sure nothing leaks...

FYI...
If you have a 3/8 line/ filter
autozone # FF687 is wrong
advance auto # F65277 is wrong

and I assume you will need a 3/8 fuel filter tool to remove it...
I only had a 5/16 and made it work...then when I took the wrong filter back I took the wrench back too...
so I actally saved money because I got $23 back...and only spent $17.50...but spent my savings on gas and about 3 hours!!!

actual time spent on truck was about 10 minutes...

Learn from my misfortune and good luck

My experience has been similar to Intimidator's.

I've found out that the 2006's can be a little tricky for the part number. I think some of you with the other 2006's got lucky on this one but I did not. This is just something to be aware of.

I went into Advance Auto Parts and asked them to look up my truck and they said it was the Motorcraft FG-986B. When he went to get the filter I noticed a note on the screen that said something about "before...2005". When he got back I asked him to check what a 2004 would be to make sure mine was correct, and it came back with the same part number. I SHOULD have asked him to check what a newer model would be as this would have helped solve my problem.

As per rockauto.com:

Motorcraft FG-986B is for BEFORE 12/05/2005

Motorcraft FG-1083 is for AFTER 12/05/2005

I looked at the fuel filter that's on mine now and it's a WIX 33243 (listed as being for post 12/5) thereby confirming the FG-986B is incorrect for me. As if comparing the two filters side by side was not enough, I tried to fit the back end of the filter (the side pointing toward the tail of the truck) into the line and it didn't fit right (too skinny).

If you have an '06, whether the above does or does not make sense to you, just check what your current filter is to make sure you're getting the correct filter.

Also, my fuel filter tool wasn't fitting for some reason. I've only been able to get half of either side in at a time. I'm going to try the plastic rings as did ZeroDormancy among others.

Thanks for the tutorial, it was EXTREMELY helpful. Honestly I probably would have ended up paying someone to do this every 20,000 miles for the life of my truck but now I don't have to.

I have a 2008 F-150 and I got a Motorcraft FG1083 from my local Ford dealership for about $23. I wasn't sure of the size of my fuel line so I went to Sears and got a set of Angled Disconnect Tools for $17 figuring that one of them would have to work. My truck had the blue clip and all I did was slide 5/16" tool in there and it popped right off. My truck was only sitting for about an hour and a half before attempting this so there was some fuel spillage but nothing serious.

I did have trouble getting the fuel line off on the engine side, butonce I got the safety clip off, I found it easier to take the actual filter out of it's harness first so that I could manuever around that end easier at which point I got the fuel line off without any issues. Once I was done everything clicked right back into place with no leaking. Very easy, took about 5 minutes total.

Thanks again.

I changed my filter last night. Hardest part was removing the (blue) clip. I replaced it with a clip provided w/ my filter from O'Reilly's. '06 SCREW with 67k miles....this is the gas I drained from my filter.

Thanks to the OP for the write up.

where can you get the replacement clips? I have a blue clip going straight to the filter on my 04. I started to take it off and it looked like I was gonna break it so I just wanna get the extra clips so I can just replace them.

Only thing I have around here is a Advanced Auto & Autozone..... & of course the Stealership

I just did mine and the blue clip on the inlet side wasn't an issue at all. The outlet (engine) side was a bitch though. I mangled my plastic disconnect tool and it just didn't want to let go. First time ever having an issue with one of these connectors.

I ran to Advanced Auto and grabbed a metal "4-in-one" disconnect tool (THIS ONE) that was supposed to work for 4 line sizes. It seemed kind of cheaply made but was only $5.99, which seemed like a better deal than the aluminum ones for $13.99 which were each only for one size. Mine truck has the 3/8 lines. I couldn't get that cheap tool to go in. When I looked closer I saw what a POS it was. The end didn't even close all the way to make a true circle, so it wasn't fitting inside the connection. It was made out of what felt like chromed pot-metal. I brought that back and bought a nice aluminum one made only for 3/8, and then the connection simply popped apart.

Lesson learned....never skimp on tool quality when your gut is telling you the cheaper one isn't up to the task.

101K+ fuel filter change

First, I would like to thank everyone for their input on this forum. This is my first post and it definitely won't be my last time on this forum.

Maybe I was lucky but this fuel filter change only took about 10 minutes. I bought the motocraft FG-986B fuel filter $12.99 for my 2005 F-150. Then I started reading this forum and found that I needed the disconnect tool. I bought the 3/8" Lisle angled fuel line disconnect tool for $3 and some change. I let the truck sit over night and I changed the filter this morning with very little fuel leakage. I've included a few pictures and I will be changing the fuel filter much sooner than 200K.

Again, thanks to everyone for posting helpful information.
