Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.

Read the full discussion below to find out how to replace your fuel filter.

The truck has 33k miles and the fuel was a little off color, but not as bad some of the earlier post.
Can anyone tell me where I can find a replacement Orange fuel line clip

2004-2008 Fuel filter replacement - CORRECTION

All, I want make you aware of a correction to the process defined by our good friend who did a great job posting a detailed process with pic's.

The back (orange) clip does NOT have to be pried off, but is disconnected inserting the larger end of the special tool into the line. Just finished my 06 supercrew and verified the process.

As suggested, I let it sit for a bit and then; instead of prying the orange (rear of filter) clip off, I simply inserted the slightly larger end of the special tool into the line and unhooked the line at the orange clip.

I then unhooked the front clip and used the smaller tool end to unhook the front line. I proceeded to follow the remaining instructions to replace my filter.

Perhaps a Ford tech can verify how we are supposed to do it.

Done in 10 minutes.

just replaced the fuel filter on my Screw, oddly it was much harder than I thought it would be just because the metal part of the hose that went into the filter was so rusted it did not want to release even with the tool so had to spray some good ole' penetration oil and it eventually broke free. I think it's the original one...ended up breaking the metal tool in the process. I just hope now I can get better gas mileage than 15.4

Attempted replacing my fuel filter today (2008 FX4 5.4L Flex Fuel) with a Fram G8018 from AutoZone.

Struggled a bit with the tool and disconnects, but managed to get the old filter out. The remaining gas in the filter (inlet side) was quite dirty, not surprising after 60k miles.

Installed the new G8018 filter, reconnected everything, cranked her up and could hear gasoline splashing out onto the ground. Took the new filter back out and compared to the old, turns out there's a size difference between the two.

Below is an image of the two filters, I've highlighted the size discrepancy in red.

Has anyone run into this before? What is the actual part # I should look for?

Found the solution, apparently even though my engine is equipped for Flex Fuel (E85 capable) it was equipped with the non-Flex-Fuel system and therefore needs part FF756DL, which has a wider inlet and outlet diameter.

Just a heads-up in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Otherwise, great write-up and thanks for saving me some $$$!

is this the number for the filter from the ford dealer? Reason I ask is I went to local auto parts place and purchased a filter that was told would fit. the tubes on each end of the filter were too large for the fuel line. I must drive over 35 minutes to local for dealer and want to make sure they give me the right one.
thank you for your time in this.

I have the xlt 5.4 triton with what i was told was the largest engine ford made to date.

you can reply at wmimifaye1@verizon.net

My clips seem differen't

I have smaller blue clips on both sides of the filter and short rubber hoses to the hard line 4 inches or so on both sides. ia ther something special I need to do to get them off, there ie not enough slack in either side to take them off.

I have a 2007 F150 King Ranch and the inlets are 3/8". Oreilly carries the WIX fuel filter #33243 which should be for most F150 models starting with 2006. The WIX filter is what I used and had no issues at all.

Looking up the MotorCraft FG1083 shows the following compatibility:

PICKUP F150 1/2 TON (16) 2006-2010
2010 V8-330ci 5.4L FLEX/FI Vin V
2009 V8-281ci 4.6L F/I Vin W
2009 V8-281ci 4.6L F/I Vin 8
2009 V8-330ci 5.4L FLEX/FI Vin V
2008 V6-256ci 4.2L F/I Vin 2
2008 V8-330ci 5.4L F/I Vin 5
2008 V8-281ci 4.6L F/I Vin W
2008 V8-330ci 5.4L FLEX/FI Vin V
2007 V6-256ci 4.2L F/I Vin 2
2007 V8-281ci 4.6L F/I Vin W
2007 V8-330ci 5.4L F/I Vin 5
2007 V8-330ci 5.4L FLEX/FI Vin V
2006 V8-330ci 5.4L FLEX/FI Vin V
2006 V6-256ci 4.2L F/I Vin 2
2006 V8-281ci 4.6L F/I Vin W
2006 V8-330ci 5.4L F/I Vin 5

The Fram G8018 is for older F150 trucks with a 5/16" tube from what I can tell.

I just changed mine last night and used the cheap blue angled tool to remove the front line.

Good write up on something that should (and used to be) very simple. Thanks to this write up, I already had my new fuel line tool and Fram G8018 filter. Unfortunately, that only got me half way through hell. First thing today I as going to drive the truck into town to gather a few items and mostly just drive it a little. I've only had the truck one week ('07 Screw Lariat) and have only really driven it home after the purchase. Went to start it up for the first time in a week and the battery is dead. Good way to start off the day. Drag the battery out and take my car into town for it and other goods. Only $68 for the battery, not bad. Got it back in and attacked the fuel filter. Oh what fun...

Mine had a pink clip on the inlet side of the filter. I pulled gently on the little tab in the center to release it and of course it just shattered to pieces. Dug it out piece by piece and released that end of the line. Used my handy dandy tool on the other end and it popped right off. I knew I would need a new clip (have a million of the old style) but I went ahead and fitted the new Fram filter. Big surprise, the 8018 doesn't fit, the fuel lines are larger than the filter inlet/outlet. No problem, I'll just go back to town in the car and get a Motorcraft filter and clip at the auto parts or if worst comes to worst, at the Ford dealer.

Episode 2, at the auto parts store. They have never seen such an exotic super duper clip in their life. Only the old style. No problem, across the street to the Ford dealer I go. At the parts counter, the guy has never heard of such a clip and says there are so many varieties. He looks in the box with a Motorcraft filter, no clips. He looks on the computer and "maybe" locates a similar clip for only $25 and doesn't know if it is the same kind. No thanks, I'll check the internet for my next move.

Episode 3, Here on the net. Rockauto comes to the rescue and lists the clips with a nice picture so I can be sure. Order the clip and Motorcraft filter with shipping for $24 with the discount code I also found here on F150online. Now all I have to do is wait for a clip while my $20k truck sits another week.

I got my new filter and clips from Rockauto today. I bought a pack of clips that includes two 3/8" and two 5/16". I knew I needed the 3/8 so I installed the filter easily without issue. Upon further inspection, the broken clip I had removed (now in many pieces) matched to the 5/16 clip. It appears some goof ball had once broken the orginal clip and installed a new clip that was one size too small. It had a Napa Gold filter on it so I know it wasn't the original Ford filter. The filter I removed had been jammed into the 5/16 clip and that is why it was impossible to remove without total destruction. The new clip works great and the filter can be replaced without issue.
