Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.
Read the full discussion below to find out how to replace your fuel filter.

2004 - 2008 Fuel Filter Change With Pictures
If you want to open up the spelling/grammar/english aspects of my post, may I suggest you re-read my post?. I wasn't "sarcastically calling someone stupid" as you said. I was sarcastically calling someone INTELLIGENT. (oh how IRONIC, huh?)
Not sure why you're so angry, but hey...thanks for the well wishes buddy. I wish nothing but the same for you.
Back to the thread...I DID actually replace my filter over the weekend, without leaks. I had to cut the fuel line and eliminate the metal 90 degree bend on the engine side of the fuel filter, since my "quick" removal tool ruined the 1 of the 4 ears at the quick connection.
Seems as if the fuel line on the engine side of the fuel line after the 90 deg bend is 3/8" diameter...but the line on the tank side of the fuel filter is 5/16" diameter?
I have my 'before' pictures I want to upload, but don't have the 'manage attachments' link at the bottom of this screen? Do we need to have a minimum amount of posts or something before we're permitted to upload images? I didn't use the 'quick reply' method to post on the thread. I replied from the main thread.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info on how to do this. Did it last night, broke the little orange clip but picked up some more at the auto store. At 96,000 I'd say it needed to be done. [IMG]

I'm at a complete loss. Replaced the fuel filter 18K ago with the motorcraft FG1083. Went as smooth as could and didn't find it hard at all. Now its time again, and i can't get the front hose (going to engine) off. I'm on my second fuel disconnect tool as the original one the OP used i broke in half from trying to remove the line. The fg1083 front line measures to 3/8 but when i place the disconnect tool it has a slight gap. I've even slightly bent the line of the filter to where it meets the housing.
1. Is it normal for the front line to have someplay at the connection with the filter?
2. I have the gold plated tool from advance auto for the 3/8" lines, and has gap around the circumference of the line, would the fix be 5/16" to fully "hug" the line?
3. I have blue clip and fully understand how it works, i can remove that and the filter from the bracket without trouble but i'm stumped as to the front (metal line) and have run out of ideas. I doubt using the plastic clips inserted will be of any help but may worth to try, along with buying that ford quick disconnect tool like shown on the video. My line is nothing like the one in the video (quick and easy unsnap)
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

It took me several minutes to get mine off. I tried everything. Even got mad and quit for a little bit. Then all of a sudden it just slipped right off. Not sure what I did that time but it worked. I nearly broke my little disconnect tool like you but luckily it just bent. This may sound useless but maybe it is one of those things that takes less to get it done. By that I mean just try to be gentle and it may just slide off, whereas if you try to force it, it may bind. hope it works
Step 2:
Let the truck sit for a few hours to bleed off some fuel pressure. There will still be some leakage, but it won't be a geyser of fuel spurting out.
Disconnect orange clip from fuel line connecting the fuel tank to the filter. I used a flat tip screwdriver. The clip removal should be done very carefully, as it is very fragile and doesn't want to come out easily. Why ford did not include a new one with the filter is beyond me. This isn't a part that should be re-used. When I do this again I will have a spare ready to go on.

Once the clip is removed the fuel line will come off. Push the line up over the frame to keep it out of the way. Be ready with a rag to catch leaking fuel.

Trouble with mine
So I did mine yesterday. I went to NAPA and got the filter and came home to takle it. One thing that I havent seen anyone mention on here is not enough room to get the tool in the front disconnect. I don't know if mine had been previously replaced with a right diameter wrong fliter (it was old and rusty, no numbers to be seen) but on both sides there was a shoulder coming out of the filter. Not a big deal on the rear. On the front the metal tool was too big to get inbetween the filter and the disconect. I tried everything. I ended up breaking the plastic tool that comes with the kit trying to get it wedged in there. So I had a buddy come over to look at it with me. He called his friend that is a mechanic and said when that happens to him he cuts the filter out so that he can get to the release mechanism. So that is what I did. It was either gonna be driven in trumph or towed in defeat at this point. We used a hack saw lubed up very very slowly. I know. Its a high risk manuver. We are both firefighters and realized the stupidity. Once we cut the front off between the shoulder and the coupler we were able to get the metal tool in. Shoved it in, twisted it around a bit and it popped out. What a PITA.
long story short, back end came off easy, the front end of the filter is being a total Bee. I have no more patience to mess with it today, I will try again in the morning when hopefully the sun warms things up a bit more. New filter is a motorcraft bought from ford dealer, bought the tool from autozone, read how to take the filter off, this is a bigger pain then trying to out a new starter on. I even tried to wedge a screwdriver inbetween the old filter and the release tool and nothing. time for some bourbon...
Did mine today finally @ 64k miles, I know I was way over due but OMG!!!

Have the famous blue clip, followed all the directions in this thread and others on this site and it was a snap, truck sat overnight and gas still came out of each ends one worse than the other, considerable bit but not too bad. I installed the Oreilly house brand (Microgard p/n 33243 = Fram G10166 w/the 3/8" line, said to be a purolator filter?) filter which was $10 because now I plan to change it around 15k miles after seeing this crap that we pay over $3 a gal for WTF!

Great thread.
My 2007 Supercrew fx4 5.4 with Flex-fuel required an FG-1083 (owners manual listed the other filter) and had the blue clip.
Tried a Fram filter first and what they claimed was the equivalent was the wrong size - so ordered a Motercraft filter. Managed to get the blue clip and rear fuel line off with a fair amount of tugging.
I found the OEM metal disconnect tool was not a good fit on the filter - couldn't get the front line to disconnect. Had to ream the disconnect tool out a good bit with my dremel tool - after I did that it fit well enough to discconnect the connector - (made a popping noise). Found it was easiest to work on it by removing filter from bracket. After that re-installing new filter was easy - took all of 20 secs.
Filter was filthy after almost 70k. Engine was starting to hiccup - hopefully this will improve things.
