Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.

Read the full discussion below to find out how to replace your fuel filter.

65,000 replacement

First off I am a Blue Clip Breaking *&^%$#@.....

Got Wix filter & tool @ local Mom & Pop autoparts $26. Wix filter came with two white clips. Had I been adept in removing Blue clip this would have been a 10min job.

Fuel on tank side was dirty!

fuel filter brand ?

There much difference b/t the Motorcraft and Purolator filters? Can't find the Motorcraft at auto parts stores and don't want to pay $23 for it at the local dealership.

Thanks in advance

Good grief! My dealer charges about $9! Purolater makes the Motorcraft, so they should be just as good.

OOOPS! I was thinking oil filter. I get the Motorcraft fuel filters at O'Rielly's for about $13. Purolater should be fine, though.

Thanks!

I actually went with a NAPA which is made by WIX b/c it is close to my office. I didn't think there was that much difference b/t Purolator/Motorcraft and WIX anyway.

Also changed my cousins filter in his 2V 5.4L '04 F150 as well and the incoming fuel looked like coffee, grounds and all!! He has 99k miles and I bet it was never changed...

Bent and broke the pot-metal tool. Returned it for a refund and got a different style pot metal tool, which also broke. I am doing something wrong... Ran out of time and gave up. I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm gonna go get the plastic snap on piece and also get the billet tool and see which works best. Still cheaper than the shop doing it.

Oh, and the blue clip came off super easy, in like 30 seconds. I just need to get the damn metal clip off now.

I understand how it works and how to get it off, but the damn pot metal tools don't make a complete circle and do not fit in under the lip to release the prongs.

#frustrated

On a good note I did flush my tranny and replace 14 quarts of tranny fluid and filter.

Ok, bought the OEM brand anodized aluminum tools and used the 3/8" tool and the metal clip popped off pretty easy. I had to do some wiggling but it finally backed itself off. Blue clip was again easy to remove.

Fuel on the unfiltered side was like brown water. Fuel on the filtered side was still clean. 110K miles. I should have changed it sooner!

Do yourself a favor and get the aluminum tools. The cheap ones are just that...cheap!

$12.00 filter
$20.00 tools
Total $32.00

Jiffy Lube charges $69.00

Agree on the blue clip. It is easy. The other side is kicking my ****. Broke 2 disconnects trying to free it. The first broken disconnect tool was the cheapo one. The second one was the colored anodized aluminum one (not really my fault, it was poorly put together).

Back at it tomorrow.

thanks!

Once again this forum makes the job easy - I had the right tool, the right part, and knew how to manipulate the clip. Super easy to do, and short of smelling a little like gasoline it went off without a hitch.

Thanks to all!

Here is a YouTube video that shows how to use the fuel line tool. The video shows air conditioning lines, the concept is the same.

Just did mine, wouldn't have done it without this DIY post. Thanks
