Have you not changed your fuel filter in awhile? Fuel filters are probably the most neglected preventative maintenance. Fuel filters screen out dirt and rust particles that may have gotten into your fuel tank or lines. Clogged fuel filters can add a variety of issues to your vehicle and extra wear to your fuel system.

Read the full discussion below to find out how to replace your fuel filter.

I remember this job worked pretty easy with the disconnect tool. I used a AmproT70045 I got from Advance Brothers. Maybe $8 for tool. I believe I used tool on both front and rear couplings after removing the front clip and the lines slid off no problem. The tool simply disconnects(expands) the spring clips over the fuel filter inlet and outlet flanges. Lines simply "clicked" back on the new filter, then installed clip on front.

As far as depressurizing line, I struck the solenoid located inside the passenger side front kick panel with the wood handle end of a hammer with the engine running, then let it "run out of gas." It will kill power to the fuel pump as its actually a "impact" sensor that activates in case of a crash. Pushing on the plunger at the top resets it.

Changed mine at 30k, didn't check to see how dirty fuel was but bet it was after all the hurricaines we had in late '05 disrupting gas flow to the southeast. I'll prolly be changing it sooner now that I see how easy, cheap the procedure is. Good insurance I figure.

Thanks for the posts and the pictures, very informative.

good news! i got it off using one of the plastic ring tools not that metal one...much easier. then another hiccup came, the filter i picked up fro auto zone wasnt the right one, so i picked up a fram from wal mart...same thing, doesnt fit. the tips are a fraction too small. so i had to put the old one back on till i can stop by the dealer tomorrow. i knew i should have just got with motorcraft from the beginning. do any other auto part stores carry motorcraft?

I think that the biggest reason to do this is to prevent wear and tear on the in tank fuel pump, and the fuel injectors.

I crawled under mine today to get the part# off my filter so I get the right one. My truck has the orange clip on the filter and the blue clip further back. I think the reason some trucks have the orange clip and some don't is the wheelbase, the orange clip is on an extension line that looks to be about 6 inches long, the same difference between the screw w/5.5 bed (139 wb) and the scab w/6.5 bed (145 wb). Probably everyone that has just the blue clip has a screw w/5.5 bed and us guys with a scab have the orange clip extension.

BTW where are you guys getting the motorcraft filters from? I have a murrays auto parts (o'riellys) a vato zone and a napa nearby and none of them carry the motorcraft.

Changed my filter today, it sure is necessary to let the truck sit for awhile. I tried to do mine right after getting back from the parts store and there was alot of fuel that sprayed all over, so I let it sit for about 25 mins and there was still alittle pressure. Took a few minutes to figure out the tool but once figured out it was breeze. I have the orange clip on mine and that came off really easy too. Was really a 10 minute job once pressure is released and you figure out that tool.

And the fuel in the filter was really really dirty like in the pics posted before.
