Official PTM Bumper Update

I'm going to keep all my posts related to my bumper project under one thread.

Update 6/19:

Went into town today and found an automotive specialty shop. I gave him a list compiled from member's suggestions on here and here's the breakdown:

1 qt. - P1A60 Sealer : $30.00
1 pt. - Paint Suffix (YZ Base) : $18.50
1/2 gal - Clear Coat : $45.00 ()
1 pt. - Reducer : $7.50

Grand total: $101.00 for paint. I get paid monday so I told them to pile it together in one order and I'll be by monday afternoon to pick it up.

Next up:

I need help on sanding, guys! More specifically, I need a shopping list. What grit should I get for taking the current layer off, then what grit for after the sealer/primer and what for the base? And can anyone tell me what exactly wet sanding is supposed to do compared to dry sanding? Just making sure on the whole process before I begin.

Also, what about my holes I have? Just stick some JB weld in there and file it down or what? I'm looking forward to getting underway. Pics will be plentiful once I start.

-Alex

Edit: A buddy of mine has two spray guns that attatch to the compressor we have, so that saves me some $$$.

spray guns and compressor are useless for paint if they have moisture in the lines so do yourself a huge favor and get a moisture trap. good luck and its about time lol

Well when I go to pick it up monday I'll see. It was a small shop tucked away behind some building. I seriously have passed this place and never bothered thinking much of it. They didn't have much on thier shelves, but if they had what I needed in the back room, I hope they have one of those too

do you have a body/engine shop class at school ?

Check to see if there is a local school that has a shop and can help.

ask around @ school see if someones dad or uncle could help.

In my county I know of three high schools that have a engine/body shop and one university

IDK about the filling the holes with jb weld. Agian I would Ask everyone for help even the supply store mybe they know someone that dose this a lot in ther garage ...

i would not use jb weld to fill the holes. i dont think the paint will stick to it very well. you are better off using bondo or a small fiberglass repair kit

@01lightningsuper.

yes we do have shops like that at school. I took AutoTech last semester and they also offer AutoBody. Unfortunately, school just ended and wont begin until late August. I also thought about it, because our AutoBody class has the ventilated spray booth and everything, but all the rednecks who are in that class are complete a-hole Bowtie lovers and its impossible to work on something without someone sabatoging your work should it belong to a Ford

Thanks for the headsup on the JB Weld thing, I'll ask around, I'm about to leave for work so I'll swing by a few shops and see what they say.

Update #2 (6/23/08)

So I got paid today, $350. I filled up ($100) then paid off my dad for the trannie ($100) and then bought a few items at wally-world. I was going to buy the painting supplies, but my dad said to hold off until he got a weekend off so he could help me shop around until I pulled the trigger. So today I go to work on taking off the bumper and cleaning it. Next step is filling in the hole and sanding it down.

Which is where I need some help.

What type grit should I use to take off the coat that Ford put on there? I washed it down with dish soap to remove all the wax I put on it, and also I found a couple rolls of 120 or 150 grit in my garage. What do you all recommend to taking the base coat off? I'm heading into town later today to pick up some fiberglass repair kit and some sand paper, so lets hear it!

Also, I'm going to use Krylon Fusion on the lower valence and paint the bumper seperate.

Did you stand on the other side to see if it would break too?
