Well don't beat yourself up just 'cause she has better taste and/or can afford a better truck than you.
If I want to see my brother in law bounce off the walls, I just mention "the truck". Gets him going everytime. Especially the 18" wheels. He hates those things. Wanted to trade me for mine (17), but I had just put on the new Mich and said no way. His idea of a truck is to have a welder on the back or hooked up to his trailer with a backhoe on board. Anything else is a waste of money.
Of course, I like the truck and always praise her choice in vehicles even if it gets him going.

Best of Both Worlds
I personally own a Lariat, but I can't say that I didn't wish it had some FX4 options. I think everyone here that really knows all the options for Lariat and FX4 can agree.
1) I prefer the painted fender flares on Lariat vs. the textured plastic ones on FX4. Plus the textured ones get filled with wax/polish.
2) I prefer the black leather seats w/ the silver accents on FX4 vs. the all one color Lariat leather seats. Plus, you can't get the FX4 seats w/ heat... very nice for cold climates (Michigan).
3) I definately prefer the guage cluster and carbon fiber dash in FX4 vs. the Lariat cream and wood, but FX4 doesn't have the message center or digital a/c controls.
4) Personally don't really care for either front end. I honestly like the XLT the best. My black Lariat has a XLT black grill and grille surround.
5) FX4 shocks? Shocks alone may give the FX4 an ever so SLIGHT offroad advantage, but tires and ground clearance are the main factors and they're the same on both trucks. Plus, what % of our driving time are offroad anyways? Where would you rather be more comfortable?
6) The home link in Lariat is definately nice if you have more than one garage door and the radio and a/c controls on the steering wheel are definately an added convience.
Ford should make a LX4.
Basically a Lariat w/ FX4 with heat seats, FX4 dash (carbon fiber) but with EATC temperature controls, painted fender flares, a/c and radio controls on the steering wheel, homelink, and the XLT/Lariat front end, but with color keyed bumpers, grille surround, and grille.
Who would be interested in that?
