IMO, the following applies:
XL - Work truck, rubber floors, more common in V6/5 speed trim than V8/auto, built for contractors and the like.
STX - Poor man's F-150. Still retains the rubber floors from the XL model, but has such things as a 6 CD changer/MP3 deck, geared towards college age single people.
XLT - Mid-grade F-150 (kinda like 89 octane), good all around truck, more common as a 4.6L than a 5.4L, geared more towards young families.
FX4 - The "sporty" version of the F-series 4x4 trucks. Stiffer shocks for those guys who don't give two hoots about things like "ride quality." Typically geared towards college grads, young business professionals.
Lariat - Has every option imaginable available, but its mostly useless junk like the backup warning sensors and heated seats.
King Ranch - Creme de la creme...top o' the line before you switch to an F-250 PSD
I personally LOVE my STX, it's a great truck even though it has the rubber floors, roll up windows, and manual locks. I got a great deal on it, and eventually I will buy something nicer, but I will tell you all one thing. Ever since I had my old '02 4x4 Lariat, I will never own another gasoline powered 4WD vehicle. I got 8 MPG IN TOWN in that truck, and that is just not acceptable, especially since I just paid $2.69 for 87 octane today out here in Kali..
But hey, you do have to admit, Ford makes one hell of a truck, and they have one for all ages.

Both are nice trucks though! I'm probably going to get into another F-150 soon, and I can't make my mind up between the two which I would like to have!

Agreed Triton, In 04, I had an 04 FX4 scab, In beginning of 05, traded for an 05 Lariat screw, traded again last month back to an 06 FX4 scab ( Ford had great pricing plans at end of December ). All have been loaded, leather etc... great trucks, totally smooth, even at 100+ mph ( waiting to get my tuner back from MT to be reset for the new pcm code ) . After owning both types, IMO - I'll take the FX4 any day, and also prefer the scab style over the screw.
