My own two cents worth:

Of the three major American car makers, twenty years ago the worst, hands down, was Ford. (my opinion, but lets just leave that where it is) In the early 80's, Ford had a reckoning, and realized its quality was terrible and it needed to change or it would be up the creek...Chrysler also made a turn around, but GM just could not bring itself to recognize the problem. So, it went from having a 50% market share to something like 35% share in ten years. I grew up with GM cars, and could not imagine any other US car as my own, but during the 70s and 80s, GM cars were bad. Very bad.

By the time the 90s rolled around, Ford had begun to make some pretty good cars, and Chrysler's styling was nothing short of phenomenal. But GM still produced Barettas, Cavaliers, and other POS's that look bad and run worse. Fit and finish continue to be poor, although improved from the 70s and 80s.

I spent 7 years living in Japan during the 90s. I saw the strategies of GM, Ford, and Chrysler there, and how they approached what is arguably the most demanding market in the world when it comes to quality. GM and Chrysler whined that the market was closed, while Ford developed there distribution channels, introduced products suitable for driving conditions in Japan, and actually took over Mazda. Ford has learned that quality production is good for business, good for the bottom line. It is cheaper to build a car using JIT production techniques, and far easier to make that car defect free.

When I was shopping for my truck, I considered a Dodge (love their styling!), but would NEVER consider a vehicle built by GM. I am investing too much of my net worth in a truck to get a bag full of problems. In the end, I chose my F150 because their styling is also very nice, but the information I could get from this site, and from edmunds.com, and the like was clearer and more helpful when it came time to making the deal...I could have confidence that I would be getting the truck I wanted at the very best price available, I felt that a comparable truck from Dodge would have been more expensive.

I don't place myself with the likes of those who are nuts about Fords, and I think that GM trucks can't be as bad as their cars, but I like my chances a lot better with Ford than with GM.

No offense to all you Ford owners, but I sit and read through all of these complaints and replys. All I ever hear is that something is wrong with someone's Ford. Some and most of these problems are probably the operators problem and fault. If you treated your vehicles with care, I'm sure you wouldn't have half the problems that you do. So, don't sit here and blame Ford for all your problems. Please, drive carefully and properly and you wouldn't have most of the problems you do. Plus, it creates safety on the road for others.

MarkS,
I agree completely with you. I grew up in a Ford family and everyone I know drives a Ford (Except for me), and all I have heard is nothing but problems. I commend you for deciding not to brag about Ford anymore, but being able to stick with Ford. I know too many people that are having problems with their F150's, but continue to brag about them. I don't see the point in it. Keep it up buddy!!!!

Dondo7,
You have a lot of nerve saying the sh*t that you are saying. Women have just as much right to drive a pick up as guys do. You have no business coming on here and flapping your mouth. I think, and I'm sure the rest of the people on here will agree with me, that us women look damn good driving a pick up. This is not a place to be sexest. If you didn't realize it, it is the 21st century. Women are just as good, if not better, than men. So stop being such a wimp on here. By the sounds of it, you are not liked very much on here. Get a life and move on!!!

My point is this. I come here to learn about ford trucks. When I hear members on this board slamming other makes of trucks and saying theirs is the best thing since slice bread, I have to wonder if anything they have to say is valid or if its a bunch of bias crap. The ones here who do this sound like immature kids. Remember that people also come to this board to research a possible purchase of a Ford truck. They want to read about facts pertaing to these trucks. Not some crap about how bad Chevy or Dodge is.

I currently own a chevy truck but come here to research if a Ford may be a possible purchase in the future. The ones here who slam the other makes of trucks are obviously too biased to give an honest evaluation on anything that has to do with these trucks.

And just a thought for all the people who are comparing problems among the brands. Why don't you like to list all of the safty recalls that Ford trucks have had since 97. I think you will find that Ford has had many more than Chevrolet. Recalls are what really tell the tale.

A recent article in the Washington Post revealed that Japanese automotive companies (in Japan) have for many years kept two sets of "books", one for government inspectors, and one for in-house purposes. The reason for this is to reduce the number of forced recalls. The article went on to say that the system in the US is much more open, and automotive manufacturers are less able to get away with this sort of thing.

Now before someone sites the recent Firestone situation, Car and Driver tested a 94 Explorer recently, forcing blowouts at various speeds and guess what they found...NOTHING. In their opinion, the main cause of the resulting crashes.... BAD DRIVERS!

Just Me - just for the record I am not a redneck (born/raised in new York City) nor am I lower class. I have a BA degree in Biology - specifically in research & I am also 1 of 2 tech's in this area that is trained in the aeseptic preparation of IV chemo meds. I am intelligent, well schooled & very adept at forming my own opinions. I happen to be VERY happy with my truck & have not had any problems. I have owned Ford's for many years & was more then pleased with the cars & their quality. While I realize not every Ford owner has been as fortunate as I have been I also realize that not all Ford owners are members of the redneck/low class groups you suggest we belong to. I also understand your remarks were not directed at me specifically but I do not appreciate them either.
I posted a reply to Lemon Ford on another post (General Discussion) about the need to refrain from name calling. Just as some members seem to think Ford owners who don't complain are a brain washed bunch, I find that those who resort to name calling are equally culpable of "jumping on the bandwagon" & are just as reprehensible. There is nothing to gain in the causing of hard feelings & much to lose - the respect of the rest of us who may have been eager to hear your opinions.
Once again I will simply state a question - if you are not a Ford supporter why come here to bash them? I may throw jabs at GM/Chevy but I do it HERE - not on their boards. I don't know if it's a peculiar quirk of mine but if I dislike something as much as some members here I would leave & not return. I would not "stoop" to our "redneck, low class" tactics. Just MY opinion - albeit not a humble one at that!

cowlady,
I did not forget to fill out my profile. I believe that information is not important in the type of information exchange that occures here. Sorry if you dont agree. I am also sorry that you took my "redneck, low class" post as negative. I will refrase that as "those of limited means, and/or less fortunate". That does not include all ford owners, as I know many are very capable people in there own ways. Demographics puts the lower middle class and below as the largest group when broken down to class or societal level. This means there are MANY more people of limited means than there are wealthy people. Ford does a very good job of focusing there base model towards that group by making it more affordable than the competition. In this way Ford is smart and proves it by selling more trucks than GM. All my post was to point out is that the ONLY claim ford can make for being the best is sales numbers. Ford probable outsells GM more than 10 to 1 in base model trucks, hence, those of limited means. I believe Ford AND GM both make very capable and comperable trucks targeted at different tastes. I've just seen to many "toothless idots" getting into 1 or 2 year old F-series trucks that look like they've NEVER been taken care of( read "trashed out"). I am not here to bash anyone, especially Ford owners. I am here, as stated by few others, to research the possibility of a ford as a possible future truck purchase.

I have tried my best to remain friendly & above all a lady but I am human & I have limits too.
Just me - JUST SHUT UP! You say WE aren't friendly? We aren't going around to OTHER sites causing problems! You are the unfriendly one!
I call them Shovies because they can barely SHOVE their way down the road! I don't like Shovies & I have ALL MY TEETH! I have a truck I love & the fact you don't makes it even more special to me!
You're right about 1 thing - the profile info is NOT important! BUT - neither are the senseless, inflammatory & quite ignorant type of comment that you seem to be pre-eminently qualified to give! I must say you have done a remarkable job of showing your lack of anything worthwhile to add.
If you want to attack me then go ahead! I welcome your attempts to show me up. I can tell I have you beat just by the comments you have made thus far. If you think you can do better I am all ears. Just remember - you are on OUR territory & you were NOT invited.
