Who has Never had Engine Problems?
My 2000 5.4 truck has had virtually nothing happen (knocked on wood) except some minor crapola.
A/C compressor was just replaced
IAC was replaced about 1.5 yrs ago
Thermostat went about 2 yrs ago, stuck open so no biggy
And that's about it, other than plugs PCV and routine cleaning of the t-body which falls under routine maintenance. To further the powertrain durability, both the tranny and rear end have had 1 seal each go, warrantied and no biggy again. And finally, everything else, the usual like blendor, rad(s), suspension (all tie rods were shot as well as both lower ball joints) has went but all in all not big deals thank God!

1999 F-150 XLT Supercab - traded in with 94k miles - only regular PM, IAC Valve at 87k, and a tune up at 90k for the engine.
2007 F-150 FX4 Supercrew - 3,500 miles, not a single problem.

313,000 miles on my trucks original internally untouched engine and trans. Actually there's probably an additional 5000+ miles since the tires were oversized for about 100,000 miles. No interal issues ever. The alterator bearings have been noisey and replaced twice. 2 o2's have been changed. Outter Y-pipe studs rotted through were burned out and replaced. The reamost manifold studs are broken off, and it ticks until the manifolds get hot. The EGR passage plugged up and needed cleaned. It does have a little piston slap when cold and uses about a quart of oil every 1100 miles, but I don't see it quiting anytime soon. Gas mileage is usually about 15/19. Great engine and the rest of truck ain't bad.

2007 5.4 with 580 miles and NO PROBLEMS!
I did trade in a 97 F-150 4.6 with 142,000 and no problems at all except the usual things like alternator, plugs, wires. It even had the original water pump. It ran like a champ but I needed the bigger motor to tow my TT so that's why I got the 2007.

1997 Runs as Good AS New
1997 f150 xlt 4.6L 168,000 runs great uses almost no oil between changes
Engine reapairs - replaced the fuel pump and he TPS
replaced 2-3 accumulator piston on the trans mission
dealer replaced instrument cluster at 75,000 miles - made the appointment 1 week before the warranty ran out
not to bad after 10 years of ownership- one hell of a lot less money spent keeping it running than my previous truck- 87 toyota 4wd. toyotas are way overrated.
