Project BULLETPROOF...dream or reality?
FYI, been reading up on 102500 (stage I) and 102600 (stage II) cams for PI heads.
It seems that the stage I will work fine with the stock valve springs (I need to confirm this) and sound fairly stock where as the stage II requires Comp's valve springs and has a faint lope to the idle.
I think you lose more low end with the stage II's though, and the added cost of valve springs ($225) factors in as well.
It sucks that I probably won't have the loping idle I'm after, I'm hoping the gains are still worth it. Have you heard longtubes yet? For some reason it sounds like a radical cam at idle anyway.
There are some audio clips on this site.

Thats interesting, not having to buy new springs plus have them installed save alot in the long run. I believe Built put new springs in when he did his.
Plus when I buy a set of head I plan on buying a relatively low mileage set so i dunno.
Yea, I would have to say you'd be doing a lil more clutch work when pulling out somewhere with those stage 2s. Plus youd be winding that motor almost to 6 grand.
Do you know how hard it is to install a cam in one of our heads?

That's just what I was reading, mostly on Mustang forums. Maybe the springs are different? Comp's site does say springs recommended, so I'll prob. go ahead and do em.
I have no idea what's involved with doing cams aside from the initial tear-down and reassy. If it's out of my league I plan on having a local shop do the cams, seals, and springs. That's all that needs to be addressed isn't it?
Damn I wish spring would hurry up. It's suppose to snow / sleet again tonight!!!

Osceola_16's truck. Supposedly this bad boy doesn't even have cams...how is that? Sure sounds like wicked cams to me.

The ModularDepot guy say that the truck's PI upper intake doesn't flow well enough to take advantage of cams, and that even with the 102500's I would be sacrificing way too much low-end. They said that even though they are only stage I, they are still pretty aggressive. Comp claims 1400-5400 RPM range, which seems plenty useable to me, but if it doesn't have shat on the bottom...
Someone mentioned Crower Baja cams for trucks...anyone tried those? Is the PI intake really a limiting factor? They also mentioned that the PI intake / heads shouldn't be port matched as the gaskets are way oversized and have way too much cross section.
Worse comes to worse, I'll do longtubes, Maggie cats, headgaskets, new style e-fan bracket, & 4.10 gears. Was going to run an Eaton locker, but it looks like the price has gone up to about $700!!! Will either save that for later or watch for a deal. I was really hoping to gain more than 30HP, but I'm sure the gears will be fulfilling.
Turns out this may not end up being a true "project" after all. :o
If interested, here's the thread on M.D.: http://forums.modulardepot.com/4-6l-...f-150-4x4.html

I just read that thread.... Im not so sure I agree with the truck manifold being too restrictive. People on this site are running nitrous, boost, and n/a applications that havent been affected by these intakes. If built gained 100hp by doing a PI swap, 102500 cams, and longtubes then I would have to say that should do pretty good and gain atleast 40-50 hp. Plus you'll be adding gears which I believe built didnt have immediately after the swap.
I have heard of those baja cams, i'd have to look them up again, but I didnt think they were all that more aggressive than a stock PI cam.
Have you talked to a custom tuner of any sort? They might be able to give you better advice.

I JUST emailed Troyer about the cams situation. We spoke about a week ago and he did say it was worth running cams, but this was after discussing reworking what I believed to be my NPI heads, before realizing my mistake. If I can't get 25RWHP minimum out of cams, then I will put the money toward gears / Line-X instead. Yup, that's right, I still plan on full body Line-X Xtra in black.
I only read the first few posts but heres my take....I wanted to go that route before with my 97 Sierra, good looking, performing, bulletproof truck and its just not worth it. THe enjoyment of working on that truck and learning was a lot a fun but at times extremely aggravating, there was hardly a component in that thing I didn't touch....cept engine/tranny. I just got an 06 FX4 last week and although I'm depressed about gettin rid of my old truck the peace of mind that a new vehicle brings is nice. Hopefully this one will work out and I'll enjoy it for a long time.
HI!... Well I'm running a truck manifold. It's been gasket matched to my FOX LAKE STAGE II heads. My #'s are in my sig. It seems like it flows pretty good to me but I probably am at it's limits right now in N/A trim.

Just going to replace the headgaskets and slap on some OBX longtubes, fresh tunes, and 4.10's. I've started collecting parts and will keep ya'll updated. Troyer says I'll need fresh tunes for the headers, so the worksheets are faxing out this AM.
Any idea what I'll have to do to get the 4.6 EGR tube connected to the 5.4 headers?
