Post Fact or Fiction

When I start my Truck it sounds like there is no oil in it, until it warms up! The oil has been change recently and it is full. I called Ford and they tell me that if I use Cheap Filter Oil that its holding that extra oil in it. They tell me if you don't use a Ford OEM Filter versus a Cheap Wick Filter that it we not hold the Oil with pressure out of the Filter. So in turn the Truck motor sounds like its always a Quart low because the oil is in the Filter until its sucks it out after warming up.. Note Im a Cheap !@# so I used this time A Cheap Filter!!

Use the Motorcraft oil filter. It has a silicone anti-drainback flapper.

If your your speaking of "WIX" filters - there not cheap , damn good filters. I f you fill up to the top hash mark on the stick - it's over filled on the older 97-03 models , not sure on your model. You want look at your capacity and never put more than that in. If your using some off brand filter ,other than a premium one , then its your fault. Most off bran filters don't have the anti drain back valve and that hurts the motor as much as overfilling it does.

use motorcraft and see if it helps. Fram filters are notorious for engine noise on startup. Don't skimp on oil filters.. "you can pay me now.. or you can pay me later" add comes to mind.. wasn't that fram??? if so... ROFLMAO

If someone at Ford told you that the filter "holding oil" is the cause of your problem you should look for a different dealership for service. A problem like you describe would happen if the filter didn't hold the oil while not running. You want the filter full all the time so it doesn't have to fill up when you first start. That is what a previous reply is talking about with the anti-drainback valve which prevents the oil from running out of the filter when the engine shut off.

I use motorcraft oil filters, priced very reasonably. Never had a startup rattle in 45,000 miles.

I always have as-well - 231,000 miles - NO ticks , tapping or any unusual motor sounds on start-up - my compression was great when I checked it last - almost a year ago now..

There have been posts here showing a test on oil filters. The results were basically that they are all pretty good with the exception of Fram filters. They were the worse by far.

Ford is giving you the old dodge and weave tactic. There is always oil in the filter, but a quart? Never. Even if the filter did not have filtering screens inside the filter still would not hold a quart. With the screens I suspect the filter holds approx 1/8 of a quart with the engine turned off. When I change my oil, changing the filter is the first thing I would do, turning the filter upside down in the oil catching pan. Changing the filter first allowed me to get out of the way for a short period while the oil crankcase would drain down to the last drip, drip. Summary, even if the filter did hold a quart of oil, your rig should function well even with your oil stick measuring a quart low.

no loss if fram left.. so friggen what? I wouldn't sell a customer a product that isn't on par with the other brands. That said.. I have 280,000 miles on my ranger with exclusivly fram filters... your milage will vary.. but the other brands DO out perform fram.
