I don't care how cheap you are - for what Motorcraft oil and filters cost at Walmart, you are a fool to try to find anything cheaper anywhere.

Personal Experiences

It seems for every bad experience there is a good one. I have never heard of a filter killing a motor (unless there was a hole in it). My truck doesn't make any noise on start up and runs great (158,000 miles now). My step father who is a MASTER mechanic has been using FRAM since the 60s with no issues. I am not advocating any brand as I have used motorcraft, mobil one, and fram with no problems or noticable difference between any. I think we can all agree that there is no substitute for good maintenance.

You won't ever hear of a filter killing a motor - It 's such a slow kill . I bet if I ran a Fram since Ford installed a new motor in my 98 in 2000 - I wouldn't be using the same motor. Dry starts would have been it's demize around 160 I'm guessing..

Wow, less than 2k miles ago I switched in a fram oil filter during my oil change. Since then I have had a similiar problem on start up. If I allow my truck to sit for about a 24hr period, next time i start it, it sound dry and just bad. I had been trying to figure out my problem the last couple weeks now after reading this thread I will be switching first thing tomorrow morning. Anything other than Motorcraft being recomended?? Would like to know my options. What about K&N oil filter? Purolator?

Now you've got me all paranoid. 3 out of the 4 oil changes on my truck have been done at Pennzoil (one at the dealer). Occasionally on start up I hear a knock for about a half second. Is this the "no oil" sound you are refering to? I really have a hard time believing the engine is dry though. I lube the chains for my MX bikes using 10w-30 oil. Even after hangin the chain for days I still have to wipe it down with a rag and I still get a good deal flung of onto the bike. I'll get the next oil change at the dealer and see if the knock goes away to satisfy my curiosity.

Fram

Again......I am not supporting the company, but I have ZERO startup noise on the fram, no ticking, no "dry" starts. I must have a super special engine or something...........

If your waiting to here the damage it does - hang in there , it's comin..

Give it time - it's a slow kill.

I think that's called learning the hard way - you have the info , put it to use

like was said.. it is a slow kill. And may never kill it in your lifetime. But why would you buy fram on perpose? Tests show that not only is there anti drainback system inferior, the flitering media is ALOT less than the motorcraft. I have a 1985 ford ranger with 280,000 miles on it and it has seen nothing but fram filters. But I won't buy them any more. I get the motorcraft filter cheaper at walmart and KNOW that it is a better filter. Why skimp on somthing so cheap anyways? Who knows.. I may get 500,000 miles out of my F-150 because I didn't use fram.

I will most definately stick to you guys and your advice, afterall that is what I joined the forum for and you have been most helpful. I have another change coming up in about 1800 miles and I will put in a motorcraft.
Thanks again for the wisdom!

You guys keep talking about these test and charts "proving" Fram is inferior. Although you have gotten me to go buy a motorcraft filter and never use Fram again I would still like to see this "proof" and see just how biased it may be. Maybe I can run my own tests?

The oil filter on my f150 points down anyways. Oil cant run out of it no matter what. I guess if you guys have a filter that mounts sideways I could see your point.

Thanks again for the wisdom!

I use Castrol 50/50 in the crankcase along with the Motorcraft Filter , always have, and have abour 230,000 on the motor - I would use Motorcraft oil , but I don't wanna switch at this point - Castrol's proved itself to me..

BUT!!

A tip for the trans -

Use that AMSOIL in the tranny - since I did that , mine doesn't get hotter than 197 degrees when pulling 6000 lbs. I can't beleive how that sh^t works

Wish I would have known that long ago..
