Thanks for all prior input! I will never go back to ANYTHING napa or Fram!

Good deal!! , glad it worked out..

What's this all about

Don't believe everything you read - it's close , but not in it. I would say about a foot or so behind it in the fender-well.

I'm probably coming in a little late, but I've used NAPA brand oil, filters, and pretty much everything else from them since I bought my truck and haven't had a problem with them yet.

Napa filters are okay - they are made by Wix. Frams are a different story.

NAPA has several lines. Stay away from the cheapest. Buy the Gold (Wix) or buy the Motorcraft.

I have a 98 5.4L in the drive - the real thing!! If you want, I'll take a picture of the filter location - it's not in the bumper..

Chiming in late...

If you guys look at the people that doint have the noisy cold starts it is the 5.4 2v guys. All of the guys complaining have the 3v motors.

I have a 5.4 in my 01 expy and can use any filter no prob/noises, but in my 05 lariat, if I dont use the motorcraft, "forget about it", noisy as all hell on cold starts. Sounds like Im out of oil. I read a thread like this before and just did the test with the fram extraguard or whatever it is called. Put it this way, this will be the shortes oil change interval I have ever done...

Weird how I never notice it on my expy though.

Hope this helps, I dont have any technical stuff to rely on, but the guys are right, to hell with fram.

Later,

I couldn't believe that filter thing is why i went back and copied the link.
people think i'm ignorant anyway. i couldn't let it get any worse.:o
wouldn't your setup be like the 98 expy i have?

I appreciate you looking into the synchro' prolly not going to be a problem. i prolly just need to quit reading so many old threads. i almost posted on one again! i kinda get lost in them

Now that all the tech stuff has been settled just use the Motorcraft filter as your supposed to 820s and the oil your supposed to use in these motors.
The filter anti drain back is important or you may hear noise until the pressure builds up.
Filters of a vendor, may not all act the same everytime. You may have years of luck without a problem but then one day it appears.
The 5w part of the oil in 5w20 allows the timing chain takeups to work much faster as well as pressureize the rest of the motor much faster anytime and especially in cold temps..
This is very desirable in winter temp.
The idea that heavey oil is good is no longer prudent.
Heavey oil causes more wear (in these motors) than you may think.
These motors are not like old standard designs of years ago where you could get away with heavey oils on some notion they are better for wear.
It takes more motor power to turn the pump, move heavier oil, the oil does not cool as well and there is more drag in the motor.
