Firstly, awesome job! Congrats! The truck looks and sounds great!

LMAO! "Sissy/Girly" gears? I guess those big diesel builders have no idea what they're doing running 5.13's with 40's and built diesel motors pumping out insane torque numbers.... Gearing has almost nothing to do with how powerful a motor is. And Built's truck isn't going to be hitting OD and topping out at 85 MPH now, simply from the new motor. He's still going to top out at the speed he use to with his old motor (if he even did), he'll just get there MUCH quicker.

Again Built, great work.

You build power to go faster, taller gears go faster but you have to have teh power to move them (you now do). You would see alot faster 1/4 mile times both from traction, so you'll be able to be WOT using all of your power alot sooner and with the higher top speed you'll be moving faster... alot sooner. If you had ALOT taller gears. Like I said earlier you have way over powered those sissy gears. Your in with the big boys now. Get some man gears!

HI!... Well I disagree. I switched from 4.10's to 3.55's years ago. I made 354RWH.P N/A, and have ran a 13.6E.T (on 7 cylinders) with a GPS'ed top speed of 152mph. I run through the traps in 3RD gear around 4800RPM. If anything, I could use a bit more gear or a bit smaller tire. I even get better MPG with the 4.10's over my 3.55's. 21.3MPG on the highway. If I still ran my stock 3.55's, my 1/4 mile times would be MUCH slower. Gear selection all depends on what your using the vehicle for. In my case it's 1/4 mile racing and occasional S/R.

This is project go faster, not project tow more.

You can run 10" tires and 8.00:1 final, You could tow the world at idel with a lawn mower engine and it would get to top speed fast....... but it wouldn;t be fast.

True he might be getting there faster if he can hook up and use all of teh new power, but form the videos right now he isnt getting to use any new power. 1000 HP is great but if you cant use more than 1/4 throttle with out losing it.... then at 1/4 throttle that is only about 250 hp... isn't that about what a stock 5.4 is? Where is the gain?

The problem isn't his gearing, it's his traction. There are guys on the forum with Lightnings with 3.73's (stock BTW) and 4.10's who aren't having any trouble hooking in a lighter more powerful truck. He needs to address his traction issues, not gears.

Hello
Nice to meet you.
you got better on highway with 4.10's?
Hmmm thats the first time Ive heard anyone with that experince.
I've heard of people getting better in town in stop and go traffric but on highway typically lower rpms = better gas milage. Unless you just didnt have enough power so was having to floor it just to turn them.

I agree plus some, I'd say all the above.
Traction bars, tires, redistribute weight and fine tune the gearing.

I picked up 1.5mpg running 75, with speedo correction. I also picked up about 2mpg average in the city with the 4.10's. I do have traction bars or i would not even drive my truck. For my tire size, truck weight, and power, I know the 4.10s are just right. Say what ya want, but they are not getting changed. The only thing changing is the way I launch, or maybe even my tires.

Ohh no definatly new tires or something, A driver can only do so much to help out, you arent getting maximum performance as you are. You've already got this much money and time in it, why stop now? Take it all the way! It's sweet and pretty, now make it rock!

It's your truck if your set on them then I say keep em. But if it was mine and I sunk that much money, and time I'd play around and get every second I could out of it, especially for teh price. I mean whats a ring and pinion? $125-$150? You cant get any cheaper time shavers. I know guys that carry 6-7-8 carriers with them to the track and change according to conditions, how the cars running and how thier drivers are driving. They can swap them out in about 10 mins. and is cheaper easier than trying to carry 12-16 different tires/rims.

yea oh well, right now, $150 is a lot to me. Kinda in a tight spot. My boost gauge quit working, my wide band sensor burned up, I ordered a new water pump and fixed my old one, and cant send the new one back... Its just one thing after another, but i'll get it all straightened out soon.

Built, was that MPG gain before or after the motor swap? I kinda agree with everyone on this, You are overpowering your traction. Tires will help, so will some weight relocation and traction bars. And if you are building a 1/8th or 1/4 mile truck then you need to gear for the track. If you are trying to make a street racer, then you might want to change the gearing, NOT necessarily the gears. But maybe a taller tire. Here is the link to a tire warehouse I use, click on the tire calculator. You can compare different tires sizes, and calculate RPM differences and such. I use it when I want to change tire sizes. http://www.1sttireandwheel.com/

I have traction bars. the way I have it set up, I can feather it when i race, and with the slicks, I know i will not have a problem in the 1/4. In 3rd gear at 5k rpm im at 110, I think ill do fine. Wont know till i hit the track. Im def. not getting a taller tire lol...

I understand, I'm in a tight spot myslef and just pulling out of it (hopefully). I've done a few projects I know how they rack up the bills in a hurry. $20 here... $50 there.... $5 for that then right back to the auto store for another $5...... repeat 20 times a day every weekend..... It don't take long until your looking going WHOA... where did my money go? I had a Grand yesterday morning and havent bought anything major.....
