Tranny Temp Gauge Question
Tranny Temp Gauge Question
I need to install a tranny temp gauge on my '00 f-150. I really don't want to use a pillar pod because I like the grab handle on my side.
Question: Who and where can I get a decent pod and gauge? I would rather mount it under or on the dash. Any ideas would be appreciated.
BTW I did research in history but ran into some dead links etc. and it became a major PITA.
Thanks

HI!... GEEKY : AUTOMETER makes a column guage that might be just what you want. There's a pic below. Also use a AUTOMETER "MECHANICAL" temp guage. It is more accurate than the electrical style. Make sure you install the probe in the OUTGOING tranny line before any of the tranny coolers. IMO do not install it in the pan or in the casing of the tranny it'self. This causes HEAT SOAK and will give you inaccurate readings. This is my set-up on my truck. :::

What a hassle! I guess I'll call them Monday. I want exactly what you showed but there site has too many choices. Does that mean I have to run a fluid line up to the gauge or does it go electrical from the sending unit?
Ahhh, patience you must have Grasshopper. LOL

Is that guage and mount an exact replacement for our steering column (color and texture) Do you have part #s for the mount and gauge---- Does the present one just snap off?
Thanks

HI!... The "MECHANICAL" guages use a probe sensor and capillary tubing containing a gas. As the probe temp increases it pushes on the gas in the capillary tubing which in turn move the needle on the guages. A oil pressure guage in "MECHANICAL" form does have a live feed to the guage. If you use a -3 braided line you will have no leaks or problems. Stay away from the nylon tubing. I believe the AUTOMETER steering column guage pod replaces the upper factory one. It's held together with 2 screws from the factory.
Dead horse?
Neal, I’m trying to figure out what the significance of the 2,3 and 4th pictures you posted is. Is that not the regular t cooler like mine has? And what is the filter picture about?
I assume that the plastic on the pod is black. I know you can get dash paint at the Ford house that matches pretty good. I wonder about Pep Boys? I think that's really going to look good.

HI!... GEEK : (1) = AUTOMETER temp manifold. Where the mechanical guage's sensor probe installs in a "IN LINE" set-up.
(2) = Aftermarket PERMA-COOL auxilary tranny filter.
(3) = A PERMA-COOL 10" x 14" ALUMINUM tranny cooler. I got rid of the factory's garbage cooler and installed this one with a 10" SUMMIT electric fan kit.

Neil, I have enjoyed reading your posts over the last year and simply amazed you have enough time to do what you do. Any way, I agree with you on going opinion regarding where to place your temp. sensor. ( in the cooler line coming out of the hot tranny). One ignorant question. Which line is the un-cooled line.
I have a 4r100 tranny.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Are there any single or double pod mounts that fit the A piller where the whole thing is one piece that replaces the factory plastic? Those ones that fasten to the factory plastic piece look kinda tacky.
