Don't get too caught up in the "Motorcraft" brand thing. Motorcraft, like Castrol, does not make their own fluids rather they purchase them from other oil companies such as Conoco-Philips. Any fluid with the Mercon V rating will work fine. You can buy Supertech for $2.50 a quart or Amsoil for $10 a quart the choice is up to you. I've never seen Motorcraft Mercon V outside of a dealership, Castrol and Valvoline Mercon V seem to be the most common in my area at the different parts stores. Personally, I use Mobil 1 which is available at Advance Auto for $5.93 quart.

I agree. I just flushed my tranny and installed Mobil 1. Also, most places don't stock much ATF. Advance Auto can get a case or two overnighted to the store. Just plan on that wherever you go. The truth is, very few people ever change ATF.

Motorcraft oil is Conoco-Phillips so I assume the tranny fluid probably is too. Castrol oil is made by BP. Nothing wrong with the Walmart Supertech, it's made to spec by a major oil company. I prefer a full synthetic myself, but that's just me, I've got BG ATF in my manual box.

That isn't Mercon V by the way. Please don't use anything other than Mercon V spec or a full synthetic like Mobil 1 in a transmission that calls for Mercon V or it will shudder eventually.

Yes it is. Refer to FCSD Chemicals and Lubricants Catalog. XT-5-QMC is the stock number for Mercon V by the case of 12 quarts.

Today I picked up 6 gallons of Mercon V, part no. XT-5-GM. Local dealership had it for$94.32. That's $3.93 a quart. I don't have a buddy there. They don't know me. I'm just another guy with a Haynes Manual and a wrench. Are dealership prices really that high? Compared to boutique brands which sell for up to $15 a quart, Motorcraft is only 1/3 the price. Can Wal*Mart Supertech & other brands be much cheaper?
