WELL, IT FINALLY HAPPENED TO ME!

I have always religiously kept my tailgate locked.
This weekend I left it one time in a parking lot with the tailgate unlocked and I come back out
and laying in the middle of parking space was my tailgate........truck was gone!

Well, actually....

I damaged my tailgate badly many years ago...
It was then that I learned four out of five dark burgundy owners lock their tailgate.

I just learned something! I did not know it was available earlier than the 2004s.

Yeah, the older SD's (who share the same tailgate with us 10th gens) do too.

This may be off topic, but does anyone know how to get a lock for the tailgate? I have an XL, so I dont have one.

'97-'03, XL and below 'no', XLT and up 'standard'.

Your truck was built a dozen years ago and now you're worried about locking the tailgate?

The truth is I never lock mine, I just pretend I'm driving an XL.
If you switched to a lock handle now, that would be another key to deal with, unless you figured some way to get them keyed alike.
I got enough keys to deal with now.

I lock my tailgate, not only because of my Kobalt Tool chest, but because I do not want to be the victim of a tailgate theft!...

Unlocked because I open and close it way too much to bother with a key.

I keep mine locked because I have a soft tonneau cover that comes off in less than 60 seconds, and a bed extender. When the bed extender is inside the bed, it can't be removed unless the tailgate is down. Never thought about how easy it is to remove the tailgate though so I guess that would be another reason to keep it locked.

I had an extra non-coded key made (cheaper than an ignition key) and bought a key chain that splits in two. When I need to open the tailgate while the trucks running, I just do it.
