Thanks, Alan, you saved me $$$$

Alan,

Thanks for the posted instructions! I had to register to the forum, just to say thank you! I have a 1999 F150 4x4 and the heater core had started giving off the antifreeze smell last week. I did find an extra screw at the bottom middle of the dash, and one on the section of black plastic to the left of the cigar lighter, but that was it...took 7 hours, but well worth it, and it was not nearly as difficult as I had feared. Between fixing that yesterday, and the intermittent odometer problem today, I must have saved somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000, maybe more! I really do appreciate it, and hope I can repay the favor sometime.

Brad

Just to give you a little insight on how good these instructions really are.

Friday night: Wife got me drunk and proceeded to beat the crap out of me. She is tough. I was antagonizing her!!!

Saturaday: So hung over and sore, I started. I had problems with getting my console out. Took out way too many screws. I only needed to take out 6 and the console just slides out. I worked from noon to 5:30 by myself. I followed the instructions to a T. Bagged the screws for each step and placed them in the back with the parts. At 5:30 the blend door was fixed and the dash was going back in. The only time you really NEED 2 people is putting the dash back. So I walked away and proceeded to go out drinking again.

Sunday: Hung over but, not sore, as my wife was elsewhere, I continued. I had a neighbor help put the dash back in. When it goes back in it just does not look right on the drivers side. It turned out that the rubber door seal hides the fact that it sits about a 1/2 inch away from the door frame. Made sure it was "home" and proceeded to do the instructions in reverse. In less than 2 hours I was pulling out of the garage.

I took pictures of every single step with the exception of the console removal. I plan on posting for the benefit of others. I will do this as soon as I can get them incorporated into the instructions.

Thanks again Alan!!!!!!

Thanks to Alan's instructions I was able to replace my heater core

Thanks to Alan's instructions I was able to replace my heater core.

I ended up needing a deep 13mm socket for the steering wheel. Be sure you have one prior to ripping into it!

Here are a few shots:

It took a friend of mine and I about 2 hours to get to this point. But anouther 3 to get it back together. As carefull as we where, we managed to have 5 screws left over. No rattles, so it's all good.

One issue, I did buy a new blend door motor (just in case) and the heater core. One thing that took me by surprize was the blend door was broken where it engages with the motor. It was July 1st when we took it apart, so I was looking at Thursday of next week for the Dealer to get a new one in stock. Unfortunatly, I counldn't wait so we bolted it up as is. It works, but for how long?

Thanks for all the advise!

Mike

Heater core

Alan,
I would also like a copy of the heater core install. I have a 1997 ford F150 and my heater core took a dump about 2 months ago and I need to get it replaced before winter arrives.

Thanks in advance
Jerry

I've got a '98 F-150 with a leaky heater core.

I've read through this post, and I see a couple people with blend door problems. Should I be replacing it along with the core even if it isn't broke? Or is it rare that they go bad?

About how much does the blend door cost?

I've also read about a heavy duty heater core. Should I get it or just the regular one? I was thinking of getting it at NAPA or the Dealer, what are your recommendations? What about the foam...is it available?

I downloaded the instructions (THANKS) and plan on tackling the project soon. Should I get all the parts ahead of time, or wait 'til I have the old parts removed and have in hand, so I can compare at the counter?

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks, holly44:

Hey Tim, My blend door broke some time back and now my heater core just began leaking so I have decided to tackle the project this weekend and finally get it done.

So yesterday afternoon I ordered a blend door, actuator, and heater core for about $90 from an online Ford parts dealer. The overnight shipping cost me about as much as the parts. I received the parts this morning and will start tearing the truck apart tonight after work.

If you're interested, here's the URL for the Ford dealer. http://www.fordpartsonline.com/ When you call the number, speak to Sam Toquigny. He's very friendly and patient. I've bought numerous parts from them and have never had a problem. (have your VIN number handy as it makes ordering the right part a lot simpler)

Good luck.

edit After thoroughly reading the how-to and ordering the parts needed in haste, I realized that the clips and o-rings need to be replaced as well. Well, I called down to the dealer and they don't want sell me just the clips and o-rings. They want to sell me the heater hoses which come with the parts I need. With very little hope I went to Pep Boys & Advance and they don't have the stuff either. Anyone know a way around this problem? I feel like I am going to have to bite the bullet and buy those freaking hoses just to get my parts.

Update:
I was able to locate the o-ring/clip kit from another dealer across town this morning. I felt like going back to the first dealer and busting his ***** about not needing to buy the hose kit he wanted to sell me, but I was on a tight schedule and thought better of it.

I got a head start last night by pulling out the seats and a couple of pieces of molding before going to bed. This morning after locating the parts, I got started at 1000. About 1400 I had the new core, blend door, and actuator installed. And at 1830 I had the motor running with a fully functioning heating/cooling system as I tightened the last seat bolt.

BTW, I only had one screw left over. Not bad since I didn't bag or tak anything.

Many thanks to AlanT for the walkthrough. It made the job so much easier. For the guys who have't done this yet, don't be scared to tackle the project. It's a walk in the park.

Marshall

Here are the instructions in PDF.

You'll need Adobe Reader to open the file. It's free.....

My heater core burst in my '97 F-150 (4.6 litre) on friday night so I bypassed it, but that just caused all the weak spots in the rad to let go so I have to replace that too.

Can I please have the instructions AlanT or anybody else who may have them?

Edit: I printed off the instructions from the first post. If there is more can somebody let me know?

My neighbour is a private mechanic and said that these new cooling systems have to be regularly flushed or the coolant becomes acidic from interacting with all the aluminum at temperature and eats the components - go figure.
