Cool Heater Core

I think this is exactly what I was looking for. I assume this will work on a 98 F150 also. Alan, what would you suggest to get for parts other than the core?
Thanks

I bought the heater hoses as well because I had to cut the old ones to bypass the heater. The rad also rotted out and has to be replaced. I think I may get a blend door as well. I'll be doing it this weekend.

A BIG thanks goes out to member SSCULLY for posting these instructions on his FTP server.

Just thought I'd post a quick note about my experience replacing my broken blend door and heater core. My heater core wasn't causing any problems but with 92,000 miles on the odo I figured that I'd go ahead and replace it while the dash was opened up. Following some excellent instructions I received from a fellow forum member (Thanks again Don ) my son and I tackled the job about 9:00 in the morning. He did the wrench work while I barked out instructions and bagged and tagged the nuts, screws, etc. We went at a deliberate pace taking time to mark some locations to be sure we knew where to replace things and being very careful to properly bag and id the parts. Note: If you replace your heater core I suggest cutting the tubes inside the plenum then pull the hoses though the firewall. This is much easier than trying to remove the heater hoses from the engine bay, especially if you don't have the special tool. By 5:00 PM we had finished and were ready for the test drive. It took a mile or so before the heater started making some heat (my blend door was stuck on COLD) and when it did we were both pretty excited. The timing for this repair was perfect as the weather has taken a plunge temperature wise today.
We could have finished in less time but we we more concerned with doing it right the first time. Removing the dash is something you probably want to do just once . This wasn't the easiest auto work I've ever done but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. For anyone else trying to decide whether or not to do this themselves or have a dealer do I say do it yourself. I would certainly suggest having someone assist you as this made it much easier for us. There's nothing like the satisfaction of a job you know is properly done and it doesn't hurt that I saved myself hundreds of dollars.

Just click on the link in the post you quoted. That is the instructions!

Here it is again - http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/F-150...50_Exp_002.doc

I printed them off and then spine ring bound them, you can see them on the front seat. I did the job yesterday in about six hours.

This is what you are getting into

I was pretty surprised when the step to pull the dash back to the seat came and when I pulled the dash it actually came out!

Definitely bag the screws on each step and mark the number of that step on the bag with a Sharpe marker. When putting everything back together have the bags in reverse numbered sequence and work backwards through the steps.

First, don't YELL.

To answer your question I got the blend door with frame and blend door stepper motor from my local Ford dealer (11-6-06) for about 100.00 total. I think the blend door and frame were about 35-40 and the rest was the motor. A mechanic friend recommended the stepper motor as precaution since they can fail from time to time. So I recommend calling another Ford dealer and asking them. They guy I talked to at the parts counter new what I wanted and new that it was a common failed part. They said this was a new design part to fix the broken door issues from before that is why the door and frame were sold as a unit. Hope this helps.

Hi guys.. I finally jumped into swapping out my blender door/heater core this weekend. It took quite a while, but I finally got the dash pulled back, and the broker blender door and old heater core out. Swapping in the new heater core was pretty simple (I cut the the two inlet pipes out on the old one instead of useing the removal tool.) I had a heck of a time getting the replacement blender door in though behind it, and eventually ended up breaking the new blender door before I was through trying to get it in there. With the door portion of the blender door off, it would snap right in there without any problem, but when you connect the door to the door frame, it just barely will not snap into place. I ended up breaking the hinge (right where the last one had broken) trying to force it in there. I believe I have read since then that before starting the job, you are supposed to put your temperature control **** in the middle to make installing the replacement blender door easier. Is this true, and if so, what can I do with where I am at now to get this new replacement blender door that I will pick up tomorrow in without any problems? I hate to be this close to having the job done, but not being able to finish up and being able to put the dash back in.

As it turns out my problem was that there was still a broken part of the old blender door inside that I could not see (as it was 11:00 at night.) Got the broken piece outta there, and the replacement blender door fell right in place like it should have al along... Now I just gotta put this thing back together!
