So I just bought a macbook pro...
Look at the links I provided for processor performance and see how they are tested, the i7 is a faster chip all around, its not just faster at gaming and a gaming pc is not great at gaming and bad at anything else a fast pc is a fast pc, and both of those pc's are fast. Infact both of them are faster than the apple, processing data or graphics.
You state that both those pcs are faster than the mac at processing data and graphics. Essentially what you're saying is you've had all 3 computers side by side running the same programs, doing the same photo or video editing. Did you video tape this or document it somehow?
Then why doesn't Dell put the i7 in it's top of the line workstation PCs?

Have you even researched these processors at all? Seriously.

And to make the comparison even here is the i7 975 from the dell at the same store.
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...LPROD%3ai7+975
BTW The fact that its much faster is why the i7 is about $400 bucks more. Here is intel's comparison of the all chips in question http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=37150,37153,39719,
if you look at the bulk price difference its $437 between the i7 975 and the xeon and the xeon and slower i7 (faster than the xeon)in the gateway are the same price, just not when apple is charging for it.
sigh

So you provide prices at 2 different stores and the wrong processor for the apple and thats supposed to mean something

If you're not smart enough to figure out what nextag is I can't help you.
You're making no sense at all. Where is the I7 975 EXTREME being used in any of the computers linked in this thread. You do know there's two I7 975s right?
Now that we know there's no price difference between the I7 975 http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...LPROD%3aI7+975
And the Xeon that Dell uses in high end work stations http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...CPR-458583-B21
Which brings us back to this quote from you.
"You don't have to have them side by side to see one is faster, the reason the i7 isn't in the workstation is its faster than needed and very expensive."
WTF ::bangs head on desk:: I've never heard that before EVER in the world of computing. "faster than needed" Wow. You can bet if that I7 was a better processor than the Xeons for workstations Dell would spend the extra $500 or so on a $3 to $4k computer.

That is the processor in the apple, it is $689.99
not $1200
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/def...LPROD%3ai7+975
like the i7 chip. If you are not smart enough to tell the difference between one model number and another then its a good thing you bought an apple. The i7 chip is $511 dollars more expensive at cdw than the xeon in the apple. That is a lot of money, so that and the fact its overkill because most users of workstation pc's will never overclock is why not used much(right now) in a workstation pc from a major builder.
BTW this is intels site that I posted earlier, look where it says 1ku bulk budgetary price for bulk buyers there is a $411 difference straight from intel.
Now since you obviously want to compare dell to dell now that the apple is proven to be overpriced here are the two chips from the dell
http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=33083,37153,39719,
If you notice the xeon is $915 in bulk price so its about $100 buck cheaper, the other thing you might notice is its 1333 FSB not the new nehalem technology. Which means its is substantially slower, but the fact that it has a high 3ghz clock speed and most users only look at that because they don't know any better(YOU), dell sales the cheaper of the 2 chips to make more money. The reason the e5450 is so expensive is because its a server grade chip.

And where again did you prove to me that Apple Pro workstations are overpriced compared to PCs? You pretty much ignored this post and went off on a tagent about how much faster the I7 is. ????
So two comparable professional computers IMO (I'm sure you'll disagree
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/...mco=NDE4NDIwNA
and Dells
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...=MLB1668&s=biz
The Mac came in less so I added 8gb of ram, a 2nd 650GB internal drive, Upgraded Graphics card (cause you like those), Put in a 2nd Superdrive, Final Cut Express 4 video editing software, A HP Wireless Fax All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Copier (cool) and a 3 year protection plan.
You replied to that post with some nonsense about how much fast the I7 is. Again that computer doesn't use the I7. It uses the E5450. Which uses FSB not QPI like the W3540. And, again, to quote you
"the other thing you might notice is its 1333 FSB not the new nehalem technology. Which means its is substantially slower, but the fact that it has a high 3ghz clock speed and most users only look at that because they don't know any better(YOU)"
So let's do a benchmark with the 3540 and the 5450 Hell let's throw the I7 975 Extreme (the best I7) in with em.
http://hwbot.org/hardware.compare.do...21_1&id=1566_1
ooops.
Tell you what. You stick with your I7 processors for your gaming machines and I'll stick with my Xeon ECC memory processors for my workstations.
In the end I just want to thank you for making me research those high end PC workstations. You've proved to me that Macs aren't as overpriced as once thought. Actually, it's a great deal compared to that similarly hardware equipped Dell after I got to add all those goodies to get to Dells price.
You keep going round in circles. Until you can prove to me why the Mac in this post is overpriced compared to the Dell in this post I'm done.
The W3540 is a server chip too, btw.

You want to compare dual processor machines? The base 8-Core Dual Mac is still a better bargin at a $3299 base price than the Dell is after upgrading everything to get what the Mac has.
You're defeated, dude. Just admit it.
Yeah I wonder why. Comes with 2gig of ram and a 80gb harddrive. Not to mention a 256mb video card. Add that stuff in and see what you come too.

My question is what was wrong with the first dell we were comparing too? It was faster and cheaper, and was only a quad core like the apple. Or as far as that goes the much much cheaper gateway that was still a bit faster but like half the price?
Are you retarded, that is the machine you posted it comes with 8 cores. When you add everything else to it its a little more than the apple you posted in price, but its much faster. How you canont understand this is beyond me. If you want to start comparing top end 8 core machines we can do that also, but you should know just like everything we have discussed already the apple will come out behind.
The machines I posted for price comparison are a single processor quad core Dell and a single processor quad core Mac. Go to Dells page and price it. You don't have to get the computer with dual processors. You can order it either way. And who's the retarded one? My God man.
You're the one that came back with the dual Dell with 2gig of ram and 80gig HD.
