The last few days have been a little stressful. Saturday afternoon I cut down a chinaberry tree in our yard. Maggie has never shown any interest in chinaberries which are very toxic. In fact, everything about a chinaberry tree is toxic. While I was working, she started eating "stew" that had been in a bird bath under the tree. Shooed her away and when I went back to work, she slipped around and got in it again. That was about 6:00. cleaned everything up and was resting on the patio when I heard a commotion behind me. She was having a seizure. I grabbed her and held her till she started recovery. She chomped down on my thumb when I tried to pry her mouth open. Had my wife get the truck out and I rushed her to an emergency vet clinic. They poo pooed the poison idea, did blood work and said she had a brain tumor. I had them send the results to her regular vet and called them Monday morning. The regular vet agreed with me, we don't believe in coincidence, it had to be the poison. All we could do at this point was watch her. She got very ill Monday and then started passing all the mess on Tuesday. Did not go to Athens on Wed so I could take her in again. She is now on a couple of meds and seems to be gradually improving. It was hard to leave her this morning as she has to stay right by my side when she does not feel right. Yesterday, she would chase a squirrel then come back and lie at my feet. Looks as if she will be ok at this point, if we can get the stomach and bowels squared away. She had a rough night last night but seemed better this morning. She never likes it when I leave, but she really didn't like it this morning. It's month end and I had to get in the office for a couple of days.

So I guess all you can do is hope they crap all the poison out of their system before it kills them? Seems as if they could give them a laxative and/or something that would make them barf to try and speed-up the process?

Good luck with your little fur ball -- that would be kind of a sorry way to lose your pet.......

Thanks! Yes, had the emergency vet treated her for poisoning, maybe they could have induced vomiting to get it up, but they insisted that it was not likely the cause of the seizure. I looked up on the net and one of the results of chinaberry poisoning is seizures. Don't know why they were not familiar with it and so adamant at dismissing it. I read that three berries can kill a puppy and she is only 18 lbs, so, wouldn't take a lot. By the time I was able to talk to her regular vet, it was too late to induce vomiting. From Saturday about 6:00 till Monday about 11:00 At that point it was antibiotics and something to get the bowels back in control. She passed the goop she ate Tuesday afternoon.

Bluejay, good luck with your pup. I had a Lab/mutt mix that got sick and couldn't figure out why. Took her to the vet and they didn't know either. She liked to chew EVERYTHING. She didn't make it, found out about a week after she died that she had gotten into a spray bottle of Round-up. It shut down all her digestive organs and there was nothing we could do.

FYI if she does something like that again hydrogen peroxide will make them barf. You have to kind of pour a small amount down their throat and when it fizzes up it makes them give up whatever is in there.

We all have doggie stories because they are truly mans best friend. Hope the recovery is complete.
