Unhappy After 20 or more years, it died . . .

A moment of silence please (because that's all it's putting out any more), as my stereo receiver of 20 some odd years finally died this afternoon.

Yes, I had it for 20, maybe 25 years (I can't even remember when I got it), my good old Nakamichi TA-4A (with the STASIS amp built-in). Good old 2 channel (just like God intended). It sounded great back in the day, it still sounded great up to today. I never found anyting that sounded better enough to justify buying anything new.

I'm gonna miss my Nak -

and am dreading buying something new. All I want is 2 channel, I don't need any of this stinking 5.1 or 7.1 or 29.1 channel crap. Good old 2 channel is where it's at.

The kids at Shelly's (where I got my Maggies) knew of the TA-4A, and were not surprised at all to find it was still kicking and I had never got something new to replace it. They are recommending some B&K separates, but I'm thinking just a simple 2 channel entry level McIntosh.

Hey D . . . what do you think?

How sad Kobi

We have one that's more than 26 years old, and old Kenwood, still going strong. My husband has it in his den.

Nakamichi makes good stuff. It's ugly, but puts out fantastic sound. If only someone at Nakamichi would realize these days consumers want performance AND pretty. Oh well

I guess it doesn't matter much for home theatres, but man their car audio is REALLY out of date in terms of looks. It's no wonder hardly anyone has ever heard of Nak.

Well, if I remember correctly, it was about 1,000 dollars or so back in the day so assuming a 4% rate of inflation over the years puts it just below 3,000 today . . . which just so happens to be the price of the McIntosh. Granted, the McIntosh has much less features than my old Nak did, but sound wise . . . sweet.

However, I'm gonna have a kitchen to remodel and probably one of the bathrooms and that's not gonna be cheap. Viking appliances are expensive. Gonna have to sort it all out.

In the meantime, there's the meantime. (I gotta write that one down.)

Let me look around I may have one not being used by anyone. If it's not in my attic then my brother has it, if he hasnt loaned it out. We loose more crap that way..... if I can find it and if it works then I'll bring it to you next month. I cant remember teh model or the age but best I can remember it looks similar, we just don't run stereo.

Well Kobster, after fall asleep with visions of tube amps glowing in my head I awoke this morning to be pleasently surpised with two things: 1. I did recieve that expected e-mail from my lady friend, and 2. I got to think and research suggesting a nice two-channel pre-amp/amp... Its going to be a good day.

After some thinking and browsing around... and reading about your potential $3,000 budget I crossed many things off the list. Then I eliminated manufactures I hadn't heard with my own ears, and items priced over $4,000. I was left with one product that I think is worthy of a listen and has the potential to kick that over-rated (and priced) McIntosh off your list.

Behold the Krell KAV-400xi.

sad man. Nakamichi is good stuff. I run a Denon DRA-775RD right now, but am only pushing a pair of KEF Q15's. Vocals are very sweet

I'd listen to the new stuff and compare specs. I bet you can get a kick *** system for $1,500 or less. I paid about $2,500 for mine in the 80's and probably could get better now for $1,000.

How true is that?

How about taking it down the road at about 60 MPH and drop it out the window. Then take a few pics, and make a sig.

It looks like it's going to be a bad week for appliances and electronics.

There must be something in the atmosphere.......

I thought my laptop was a goner for sure on Sunday. It's a 2001 Dell Inspiron that's already crashed once. Sunday on boot up I was the recipient of a "Hard drive failure..." message. After letting it sit for 30 minutes and trying again, it decided to work.
