After 20 or more years, it died . . .
Bose...
Yes, I dig the sound, but the price tag can take a flying leap.
What are they like 4 payments of $350 or some chit like that?
I wish I had that kind of money to spend.....BUT, if I could...this whould be what I'd buy:

Kobi, I am sure the NAK can be fixed for a lot less than a replacement. The older units are fairly easy to repair unlike todays DSP and other processor filled nightmares.

Compared to what????
One of Bose marketing ploys, they are never set up for a side by side demo in any store, in this way it's harder for the average customer to tell how shoty, and unrealistic the sound is. I have heard a few non dealers buying bose and setting it up side by side with thier cheaper systems and selling alot of the cheaper systems because they sound better for less money.
I have heard many of Boses systems and great did not describe any of them. Especially if you factor how much better of sound you could get for the same or less money.

I'll also add, buying Bose, due to thier marketing, it could be compared to being sold a Kia Sportage for the price of a Porsche Cayene and expecting the same performance.
Of course I'll be more than happy to sell anyone an award winning, fully loaded, Kia Sportage for $84,xxx

ould
Because a budget of $4,000 can buy you vastly superior sound reproduction. I'm talking equipment that makes that POS Bose setup sound like your grampa's AM radio. I'm not joking.
If I had $4,000 to blow on a home theatre setup...
Two pairs of Magnepan MMG W, One MMG C Loudspeakers - $900
Sunfire True Sub Signature $2,195
OR
JL Audio Fathom f112 Subwoofer $2,200 (matte finish)
Denon AVR-2807 $1099
Total $4200 MSRP (rounded)
The components above would blow you away jamzy. No Bose product in the past, present, or future could ever touch this setup. If installed correctly (toss in some more $$ for good cables) you'd never leave the house. Movies, music, whatever... it would all be stellar.
EDIT: I should add you could substitute a B&W ASW 650 subwoofer that still gives you an amazing impact for a measly $700 and then up the reciever to the Denon AVR-4306. Yeah, that would be sweet. I think the other subs might be a bit too much... I was getting all excited thinking about the possibilities. New total: $3,600. Boo-yah!

You probably didn't even like the old Bose 901 Reference speakers (that may have been before your time) Back when they sort of made real speakers . . .

Jamz . . . that fridge that exploded on the highway . . . . would sound better than that Bose set-up.
I saw that price and almost had a stroke.
Bose . . . it takes the sound and whips it around in a echo chamber of sorts so that it sounds "bigger" than it is. (In the process of whipping it around in a plastic bowl it results in diminished highs and lows (hence the little rhyme joke Mag posted)).
Dzervit and I are going to have to come to your place and teach you about sound (and video while I'm there).
D . . . Maggies . . . gotta love 'em.
Bose does however make one really cool thing . . . (well, it's not for sale publicly but Dr. Bose designed it and it's quite amazing) . . . and that's an automobile suspension system:

there are a series of quicktime movies on the right, underneath where it sez "Results Through Research"
Check it out.
