It's too early to talk sales numbers, the new Toyo (I'm sick of typing "Tundra") needs to be on the market for at least 6 months to see what it's going to do. I agree though, going by the early numbers says that they have a dud on their hands.
The issue is that they just can't convince the North American truck buying public that they know how to build trucks. No matter how hard they try (there's that word again ) Toyota just doesn't stir up that tough truck image the way Ford can. Image has alot to do with why people buy trucks.

Y'know what? The Toyota is probably a very high quality product. I love the idea of a 6 speed tranny, and the engina sounds plenty tough. The problem is, first and foremost, it's ugly. Obviously subjective, but man, that thing is seriously ugly. My '04 needed a tuner and for fun I added an exhaust. It's very competent now. I was going to sell it prior to a tuner, that's how sub-par I thought it was. I've had GM and I'm not sure what it would take for me to return to them. The F150 works very well for me, and I love the look of my truck. I'm not very brand loyal though, and I think more and more people are becoming less so. Hopefully ALL the manufacturers are beginning to understand this. I buy for the best deal for me. That means performance, towing, pricing and looks, maybe not in that order. I want something that to me looks great in the driveway AND performs. I guess I'm not very green though, I really don't look at mpg too much in a truck. Sorry

For what I have read about the new Tundra is that it is a powerful and efficient half-ton (under load). That is where the Tundra will win it's war, you'll start seeing a lot more of these trucks on job sites (construction crews).
If I were a big time construction co. owner in need of a fleet of powerful trucks that are efficient the tundra would be the best bang for your buck, without having to buy 3/4 - 1 tons.
Ford needs to focus on building a much more powerful and efficient truck like the Tundra and soon. Of course the F150 has been the #1 selling 1/2 ton out there but they have done that by practically giving them away.
Ford has the safest truck on the road now it is time to build the most powerful and efficient truck on the road.
They should take some notes from this site....

For those that need a pickup truck that is fast off the line, you can spend a lot of your dinero on the F-150 Foose edition pretty soon. Something like 500hp and 550 torque?

As far as the Tundra goes, I think it truly is a threat. I was reading that the factory can't keep up with demand, and that the 5.7 liter is in much higher demand itself than they had thought. The same article said that Toyota dealerships were innundated with domestic truck trade-ins. Personally I think the Tundra is a real player here, though be it ugly (especially the interior). Nissan messed up with the Titan because they made it too "weird" looking with barely any towing/hauling capacity. I think the new Tundra is poised to do much better than the Titan. Just the fact that they don't have to take $6,000+ off the sticker to move them off the lots as quick as they come in says a lot

Around here they are offering $3000 off the price for a tundra... I really doubt there is a shortage with that kind of rebate. Yeah.. TRD... TuRD

Yeah the Tundra's are about a 8-10 on the ugly factor, I just hope that FORD doesn't follow the Expedition's new look. Your trucks should not look like your SUV's and/or show any resemblance to your car line-up. Like Chevy and Dodge's inbred line-ups.

At least in Indianapolis I've only seen 2 Tundras on the road. and about 10-15 new Chevy's and GMC's. I know it doesn't mean much yet but it looks like the Tundra is not off to a good start around here.

Also since I'm originally from a small town I notice in that in small towns that there are usually few to 0 import dealers around and virtually every one drives a domestic so this is an possible area that does not benefit Toyota.

Also I hate the interior on the Tundras....everything seems too far away from the driver and that is about all that I have to say on this

I think Ford has stepped it up a bit with the '07's. I'm on my 7th F-150, and my '07 is nothing like the previous models I've had. It litterally jumps off of the line and shifts smooth & quick through 1st & 2nd. I have no trouble staying right with Mustang's & Magnums off of the line, let alone another truck. When I pull a trailor, the low end torque is still there. I'd like to go head to head with a Toyo, but I've only ever seen ONE on the street. Definitely an 9.5 out of 10 on the UGLY scale.

At work, I just traded-in my 2003 Silverado for a 2007 5.4L F-150. The performance is substantially better than the 2005 F-150's we have (which everyone fights over so they don't get stuck with the el cheapo Silverado).

New Chevrolets and GMCs are dominate here...I do see a bunch of Tundras as well...

In terms of stepping it up, I hope Ford does, but something tells me that the maximum power will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 hp for gasoline engines which will probably be a 5.4L 4v...they'll put a lot of effort into the new diesels which will be a big plus...

As for the redesign, I think they'll do what they did with the Superduty and Expedition...They're just changing the front cap and adding the 3 bar grille...Ford is in such a financial hole, I don't think they have the money to do a bumper to bumper redesign...

Hope I'm wrong and they'll blow away the competition with that 425 hp 6.2L and bumper to bumper redesign...

Right now I'd really be split between another Ford and the Toyota. I test drove a Chevy and it really was a nice truck, but I like the looks of the Ford's better. I also like the looks of the Toyota's IN THE RIGHT CONFIGURATION! The short box extra cab's (or whatever they call them . . . not the 4 door) are actually fairly nice looking IMHO.

I think the powertrain on the Tundra's is the real deal and it sounds like they get better mileage than the smaller less powerful V8's . . . how can you go wrong with that? The latest Truck Trend had it competing against a 3/4 ton GM with the 6.0 litre in towing tests and the Tundra still had the edge by a fairly considerable margin. It would likely kill the other 1/2 ton trucks in those regards.

I love my Ford and I'd buy another, but it would be nice to have more power. I think the diesel rumoured for the F-150 in 2008 would be a huge benefit. Pricing up here between Ford, GM, Toyota and Dodge are all close enough that it isn't a huge factor IMHO. Maybe that's a Canadian thing, but they all seem to be around 40K for comparably equipped vehicles.

oh yes! lets all get rid of our trucks!
were so screwed!
a piece of **** jap truck, not to mention japanese automakers know some tricks up their sleeves to get out some extra HP, is going to ruin the f150 for the rest of time!

goddam shut the **** up.

EVERYTIME an automaker comes out with a new truck with a new bag of goodies its hyped, back when the f150 came out it was hyped like mentioned before, trucks come and go, realize it.

ford is still BLOWING away the tundra in sales, and ford knows they cant puss out in the next gen f150, and they wont.

Summer of 08 supposedly the new f150 *****, let the countdown begin

-JB

P.S. anyone hear about toyota only putting $200 out of every car into their workers' health insurance when ford puts $1500? gotta love them good ol imports.

I really think the toyo is a ugly truck like most of you do. Im sure the quality is there but only to a point. toyo has been building FS trucks since what, the mid 90s. Ford has been building trucks long before toyota was even a company. Hell, over 50 years of just the F-series name. Most of the people I know, even chevy and dodge guys will admit that ford knows how to build a truck better then anyone.

Do I think toyota will be a threat, yeah. Do I think it will be anytime soon..... not a snowball chance in hell. They need a full line of trucks 1500 ut to 3500 to truely have a place in this buisness. Just haveing a 1500 limits you greatly.

Personally though, if I had to go buy another truck today and cost was not a factor, it would be a new GMC Sierra 3500 crew cab short bed z-71 with a duramax. Ford should be more worried about there 6.4L diesels shooting flames out the rear end and driving off all there big dollar sales on those $50,000 trucks.
