Troyer vs. competition
Troyer vs. competition
Did searches, but had no luck.
Have a 05 4x4 SC. Just bought a Airraid and will be getting a programmer soon. Wondering if anywhere there is a comparison charts, dyno runs, or quarter mile time comparisons of the Troyer tunes to some of the others. Called Troyers the other day and while speaking to the lady she said there was some on this site, but could not find them herself. Thought one of you might have them in your favorites.

It really comes down to your preference. There are a multitude of manufacturers out there that make programmers for your truck. If I were you I would call each with a unit for your application and see what they claim. I personally went with Diablosport as I was unwilling to wait the extensive amount of time needed by Troyer to make a program for my vehicle.
are you asking between his custom tunes and other tuners custom tunes?or are you asking the superchips brand and other brands? if it is the first question, i have talked to mike a few times and let me just tell you this guy knows his stuff, he has been tuning fords for a very long time, there is a high demand and a wait period for his tunes for a reason, i have gone to a few dyno shops for runes and they have had there tuners there and they have all been impressed with the numbers that the 9100 superchips programer has given me, also his customer service cant be beat, and the time he will give you to personaly explain what you can do to get more power is amazing, if it is the second question, i had the hypertech 3 programer before i had the 9100 superchips and i picked up a very good gain over the over the shelf programer to the custom tuned 9100, i hoped i was able to anwser your question, good luck
Yeah that is somewhat close to what I'm asking. I guess I was just wanting to see some real numbers other than someones seat of the pants experiance. If the truck for example would dyno (no idea here) 270hp with over the counter chips A,B,&C. And dyno 285 with a Troyer tuned I would say money well spent. If on the other hand I was only picking up 3-5 hp I would question the extra money and wait time. Sorry for the confusion.....guess I should just order one and check the hype out myself.
You get much more than just HP with the Troyer tune. Your truck just all round responds better.

Temp, humidity and a myriad of other factors affect readings.
A vehicle done on the same dyno on different days can produce different readings.
Mike is the only one I know of that takes the time to have you fill out the questionarre as to the specific mods on your truck, send you the sctII then asks you to datalog.
Then sends you a updated tune free of charge within 60 days.
If anyone can produce more results without this time and effort, it is by accident only.
There is little question that the Troyer tune is the best. I don't have mine yet, but...just read this forum going back a while...no question.
The thing is, you can't put Troyer himself on a Dyno (I don't think anyway)
What separates the men from the boys is the service, the attitude and the personal attention. Here I will quote, none other than myself:
I have been in business and doing business for 35+ years. That is the comparison I offer you

Mike called me today. For those who are considering ordering from Troyer, this may help your decision. He called to go over the info on my data sheets and to discuss MY truck and MY needs. That is exceptional service. I believe he is the premier tuner of Ford F150s, but I KNOW that his business provides premier customer service and personal attention.
I haven't ordered a tuner yet since I'm still waiting for my truck to arrive but I can tell you why I'll be ordering a Xcal2 from Mike. I'll try to describe my thought process.
Do I need a tuner at all?
Well stock throttle response on these trucks is pretty bad. at a 15mph roll, step on the pedal, wait 2 seconds and then accelerate. The one I drove felt like a pig compared to the Chevys I drove. After reading it appears that Ford's tranny program is super conservative (lame) and effectively mutes whatever power there is. Power wise, 300hp is okay for a truck but won't be winning any drag races (which not the reason I'm buying the truck anyway). Regardless of the power, the throttle issue is gonna **** me off. OK so any decent programmer will fix the transmission issue and improve power a little. Good.
Which one do I get?
I read all over. Having started here, the old punk rocker in me immediately perceived the Troyer worship in here as bandwagon BS and I set off to find an alternative. Having dealt with canned tuners before, I already knew I wanted a customizable tuner and that narrowed things down considerably. I eventually decided that at least for Fords the SCT Xcal2 was the best choice. The biggest reason was that just about any shop I found that did custom tuning used the Xcal.
And finally, who do I buy it from?
Tuning is not magic. There are LOTS of shops out there with LOTS of experience doing performance and I'm sure that there are PLENTY of people out there capable of producing similar results to Mike. The problem is that there are lots of bad tuners out there too and I don't want to risk getting one of those. The only thing I have to go on is referrals and anywhere the modular motor is king, Mike gets a ton of referrals. In the Ford truck department he gets more than anyone. Checking his credentials was easy by searching through his posts. I read a mess of em and wasn't able to find a situation where he BSed anyone or gave some feel good answer. In fact there were times where people reviews were a little over the top and Mike felt compelled to inject a bit of reality. Regarding price, Mike is not the cheapest (nor the most expensive) but I hate gambling and I'm always willing to spend a premium for peace of mind.
Hope this helps

The vast majority of Lightning owners consider Troyer to be in the top 3 tuners. Many of the happy folks in this forum run NA motors. So...what is your point?Edit:
I read your posts.
Fully half of them are sarcastic bashings of Mike Troyer. Please go back to lurking

Tell you what. You go do the research for us. Spend lots of time over there and make sure you get the skinny. Really dig. Then come back and tell us all about it. Or not...
really doesnt matter if its a N/A F150 or a Lightning, Mr Troyer does have competition when it comes to tuning, all your posts are bias to him, do you see the other tuners post in this section? They probably dont because of all the favortism that is posted in here I'm sure customers of JLP, JDM, and PSP think different
If there ever was ever a "Best Tuner" then ppl wouldnt need choices, and then the other tuners would be out of business, and they still have ppl contacting them for orders
