I read over most of the posts and here is my experience with an ESP plan. This is the first truck I have bought new. I leased a 99 since I did not have enough credit to buy it new (no high end credit but lots of 2000 - 4000.00 loans). I use my truck pulling a 3000 pound ski boat or a 911 SC most every weekend. When I turned in the 99 (with 35,000 miles) the transmission was starting to go. The truck I sold when I got the 99 went through a transmission about every 50000 miles. It was a family members and meticulously maintained. A new transmission was 2500.00 each time. The town I live in does not have a independant shop that I would trust to work on my wife's 95 Escort GT (with 60000 miles and has had no problems), so it is either Ford or do it myself. So when I bought the 01 I bought the ESP plan. The payments stayed the same, no increase. For the 975.00 I paid for the 5 year/75000 mile ESP plan I get: free oil changes every 3000 miles, free rotate and balances every 6000 miles and free scheduled maintenance for 36000 miles, free rental cars while the truck is in the shop, and peace of mind. the dealer where I bought the truck does not give you a free rental car during the 3/36 warranty period but you can rent one at a discount. Is it a waste of money? It maybe but it is worth it to me. Will I ever need it? I hope not. Would I buy one again? Probably.

David, is that the Ford plan that you purchased? If so do you have to take your truck to the dealership where you purchased the truck or any Ford dealer? I ask because I am purchasing my truck from a big city dealership but there is a local dealership that I would be able to use for the oil changes etc.. Thanks.

By the way does anyone know if you can go back to a Ford Dealership right before your factory warranty expires and then purchase an ESP? Thanks

As long as you still have some remaining warranty left you can buy the ESP,if it's a Ford ESP then you can go to any Ford Dealership(preferrably Blue Oval Certified) for warranty work.

Yes, I bought it through Ford. I got a letter from Ford spelling out what all will be done and when. You can take it to any Ford dealer. That was one of the reasons I bought it since I can take my truck to any dealer even if I am out of state traveling. I bought my truck in Nashville but I have it serviced at my local dealer.

ESP - Another consideration

First off, I confess that I purchased an ESP policy for my '98 F-250 LD. I know that Ford makes LOTS of money out of these or they wouldn't bother. I just read several articles over in Blue Oval News about Ford cutting back on the flat rate on many warranty repairs. The dealer technicians are up in arms. If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't buy an ESP policy for that reason. I do not want anyone working on my truck who has just had a cut in pay as was outlined in BON. Do you think you could R & R a Navigator engine in 6.9 hrs? Would you want someone to R & R the engine in your $50,000 vehicle in 6.9 hrs? It takes me 2 hrs just to change oil. Labor figures were from this article:
